I have had a Visa Classic and Mastercard Classic with HSBC for some 15 years and must say that up to now I have very satisfied. There is an interest free period from the date of the retail transaction to the due date of the statement and basically I try to ensure full payment at the date of notification to avoid interest charges.
Finance chrges are imposed on outstanding cash advances and transaction balances from the transaction date. Statements are received monthly and this lists all transactions that took place during the period. Details of all purchases, cash advances, and points gained are specified.
I get so-called Hexidollars on my card and these can be redeemed at various hotels, restaurants and for goods such as watches, perfume, and cameras. Other offers that I have received recently include a Sporty Watch in return for purchasing American Express Travellers Cheque from a HSBC bank branch. To get the watch ,however, you must spend a minimum of US$1500.
Both the Visa and Mastercard credit cards enjoy a high level of acceptability not only in the UK but worldwide. I have used them at petrol stations, hotels in UK, Borneo, Brunei, Hong Kong and Italy,to book air line flights.to buy groceries and at duty free emporiums.
The payment proceedures are straightforward. You can debit your Current Account-which I do- or issue a cheque to the Card Services Division of the Bank. The minumum payment requirement is 5% of the current balance or Stg 10 whichever is the higher.
Overall I find the service from HSBC is good and if I have problems concerning my Visa or Mastercard they have been dealt with promptly. Occasionally I have punched in the incorrect PIN number-well I am getting forgetfull you know-and although the ATM machine "swallowed" my card, a trip to the Bank, the next morning got me my card back. So the HSBC Combined Visa and Mastercard gets the thumbs-up from me.
Thanks for reading !
