Advantages Advantages Low application requirements, sensible credit limit, various ways to bank, accepted worldwide

Disadvantages Disadvantages Only for students, not a super low interest rate

I have a number of credit cards, but this is the only one I use. I mention this so you don't think I've stuck with HSBC simply because they're the only people who will offer me credit. They're not, but I still prefer them to their competitors. HSBC are my main bank and so it seemed sensible to stick with them. That wouldn’t be enough to make me stay with them if their service wasn’t up to scratch though, but luckily it almost always has been. The application process is easy. If you’re 18 as most new uni students are (though not all those from Scotland, or some who have ... more

    Advantages Advantages None

Disadvantages Disadvantages Bad customer service, scrapping interest free overdraft on the bank account

Please note this review refers to the HSBC Student Service, not just their credit card, which is not worth bothering with anyway. I have had a student account with HSBC for seven years (I know what you're thinking, I'm the classic work dodger with too many degrees), and at first I had no problems with them. Recently however they have changed the terms and conditions of their Graduate account, which will directly and adversely affect anyone with a HSBC Student account. When I signed up for the student account it was clearly stated in all their literature that when you graduate your Student ... more

Advantages Advantages Telebanking arm is better, good at pulling customers.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Poor customer service, tendancy to close branches, new branches will be all machines nio people

I have had an account with both HSBC and with First Direct. This is the telephone banking arm of HSBC. I have to say that I have had absolutley terrible services from the HSBC side of the company. In addition to the comments made by CG in the orginal review, one of the biggest problems with HSBC is that they are moving closer and closer to a human free banking system. Many of their local branches have been closed in my local area (Hull) in favour of bigger banks in the city centres, but these have replaced people with banking machines. You can do anything from put money or cheques in to your ... more

Advantages Advantages Appeals to freshers, some years they have good bonus offers

Disadvantages Disadvantages Bad customer service, extortionate fees, security loopholes

As a fresher in 2003, the choice of banks fighting for my custom was slightly overwhelming. So being naive and slightly materialistic, i went for the bright lights of HSBC, with their free railcard and "free" overdraft facility. I neglected to look at the actual, what i would have then termed "banky" details. Firstly, although it may seem trivial as long as you get what you want at the end of the day, customer service is vital, and is something HSBC lacks. This opinion is based on various branches and their phone system, which takes you through to a callcentre somewhere in India. Now initially ... more

Advantages Advantages Comes with a great student account package

Disadvantages Disadvantages you end up using it!!

ah the world of credit cards. you get them sent out to you in the post whether you like them or not and each tries to convince you they are better than the other. when you work for the bank, its hard to be objective. my first rule of thumb is through personal experience. when i was a student i got myself into some serious trouble with credit cards.....easy money to fund all of those late night outs on the town! now i have only just managed to get away from using them and paying them back, almost! dont juggle with balances on multiple cards. one thing that we hear a lot of in banks is of people ... more
