I have had an account with both HSBC and with First Direct. This is the telephonebanking arm of HSBC. I have to say that I have had absolutley terrible services from the HSBC side of the company. In addition to the comments made by CG in the orginal review, one of the biggest problems with HSBC is that they are moving closer and closer to a human free banking system.
Many of their local branches have been closed in my local area (Hull) in favour of bigger banks in the city centres, but these have replaced people with banking machines. You can do anything from put money or cheques in to your account, take money out of your account, but once thew staff who are there to help you during the transition period after opening the one thing you won't be able to do is talk to a real person. This is a real draw back.
If they are asked about closures the response is that new more modern branches will be opening and that the necessary investment is being created to facilitate this. If by more modern branches they mean more electronic, people free banks then my personal response is a resounding NO THANK YOU.
As regards the First Direct arm of HSBC i have been a customer with them for almost ten years. Until recently I have had little cause for complaint.
This is a truly 24/7 365 day a year service, with the option of internet banking. They offer a wide range of services including mortgages savings, ISAs etc. Tha only adverse comment I would make is aword of caution if you are taking a loan ouit with this bank. Do go through it a fine toothcomb. I recently asked fopr a settlement figure on a loan and was extremely surprised at the balance given, which was much more than I expected. When I quieried the amount it soon became very obvious that I had been miss-sold this loan, and had no come ba ck on the bank. Though I suppose that one problem in ten years ain't bad.
How helpful would this review be to a person making a buying decision? Rating guidelines
Advantages: Good rewards for banking with them, lots of HSBC cashpoints to be found. Good overdraft facility Disadvantages: Some banks, such as Lloyds charge you for making a transaction from their cashpoints
