HSBC, formally know as Midland Bank Plc in my opinion are a very reliable firm. I opened an account with them 5 years ago and I have had no problems with them whatsoever and my personal bank details have been kept secure. There is no worry getting the service I need if I were to require any kind of loan or disscuss any other financial matters with their friendly staff. Interest rates on savings accounts and on loans are reasonable and they have plenty of branches all over the country.
They now have an online banking facility at www.hsbc.co.uk, which means you can handle all your finances at the comfort of your own home on a secure site. One of the main advantages their online facility has over other banks is that you can specifically make your own payments to any account, including family or friends. To access your details, you need to enter your banking ID and security number, making it even more secure.
On another note, i recently went overdrawn in my account (obviously i wasn't writing enough Ciao opinions!). It therefore showed on my account that i had been charged £25, causing a 'gutted' feeling inside of me. I thought i had an overdraft limit on my account, but it was clear that i didn't. I then phoned them up to explain my situation about not realising i didn't have an overdraft and that £25 was a lot of money for me to lose at the time. The guy on the phone told me that it wasn't a problem and that he would refund the bank charge to my account, which was very pleasing to hear. He then asked if i would like to have an overdraft on my account to prevent this from happening again. I asked him how much i could have and he told me i could have a £1000 overdraft if i wanted. I was gobsmacked that i could be trusted with an overdraft of that value and politly refused it (to prevent spending it) and said that £200 would be fine.
The only bad thing about HSBC is if you own a SoloDebit card, they are not taken by a lot of shops and other companys, which can be frustrating when you don't have the cash on you.
As i had a Solo card, i went into my local branch and went to the customer services desk and asked about getting another card. A nice helpful lady took me over to a desk and sat me down for a chat. I explained my situation and she recommended that i get a switch card, so i agreed.
Up to now the service i have received from both the HSBC staff and the company it'self has been outstanding and i would recommend them to anyone looking to open a new bank account or switch from another bank.
