I started my HSBC account when i was a student (although then it was called Midlands).
Strangely enough, for a student, my account was never in the red, and i had no overdraft extension as i didn't need it.
I was going out the country for a period of time, so i ran my account down, leaving a small amount of credit in the account. Imagine my surprise when i came back 6 months later to put a substantial amount of money back into the account, only to find it had been closed.
I had forgotten about one direct debit, which put me £20 overdrawn. No letters were sent to my "permanant address" telling me that i was overdrawn, that the account was due to be closed, or that the account actually was closed.
My name was even given to a debt collectors (all over £20!! - really that is petty).
This experience has left me unwilling to ever do personal business with HSBC again, and i would thoroughly advise people who want to join to think twice.
I am definitely one unhappy HSBC customer. And let it be said that there are other good banks - my NatWest accounts have never let me down since i was 2 years old
