I have had an account with HSBC now for about 10 years and up until recently have had no problems with them whatsoever, but ......
When i went and did a little bit of shopping a couple of weeks ago and paid by printed cheque the value of £8.77, didn;t expect any problems. I later singed up for HSBC's online banking service, where upon checking my account found that instead of the small sum of £8.77 going out, they had actually taken £58.77 out instead.
I immediately phoned the bank and notified them of this mishap, and was told i would have to wait up to 7 days for a copy of my cheque, which quoting the man on the phone "they won't charge me for"(very kind of them, hmmmm). The customer service at HSBC leaves a lot to be desired for as they told me that it couldn't possibly be any fault of their own, as far as they were concerned it was the fault of the shop in question, but according to the shop in question it's the bank's cheque clearing system that is to blame. We have susequently been back to this shop, where they showed printed evidence that on the day i was in there they had sent a cheque for £8.77 away for processing.
It has now been over 7 days since this mishap and am still awaiting my copy of the cheque from HSBC, and also awaiting £50, which neither the shop or bank seem to want to accept responsibility for.
HSBC are one of the most eficient banks for taking charges and monies from accounts, but are one of the slowest in paying monies back when mishaps like these happen.
I suggest that every customer of HSBC keep a close eye on their online or postal statements, because how many others has this happened to and how many others is it going to happen to before HSBC do something about it ??
