I have been with HSBC for more then 10 years, originally having a student account and now a bank account.
I have always found HSBC to be responsive to my needs and they have often agreed to facilities I would have expected them to have turned down. I have many of my financial products with the HSBC group and having an HSBC account often stands you in good stead for facilities with other group companies (e.g. Marbles, M&S, HFC).
Customer service is generally excellent (although Indian call centres can be a difficult experience) and any problems I have had have been quickly resolved. I use internet banking to manage most of my banking to avoid the call centres and it has all of the functionality you need and expect to keep on top of your finances.
Being a large high street bank you get the benefit of a wealth of financial services, but they are not always as competetive as they could be. But you can't have averything, the infrastructure of a bank such as HSBC is expensive to maintain and that means not all products will be the cheapest on the market (although some are).
As a high street bank (and I have also been with Lloyds TSB and Halifax) they are excellent. If you want to convenience of a large banking institution you can't beat HSBC.

I would be happy to re-rate, I just feel it needs more info! Good info though! Well done!

Would have agreed with you two years ago, but not now! Let's just say Xmas isn't a time when your bank should fail to cancel the SO and DD you asked them to, and then hit you with hundreds of £s in fines and fees! I wouldn't recommend them to anyone! Good review though. P : )
