The HTC Touch Diamond is, in my opinion, a classy looking phone. The back cover features a faceted design which does indeed mimic the surface of a diamond.
Once I'd got the hang of the ''Touch-Flo'' menu system it became very simple to use. Now that I've experienced this touch screen phone I'm not sure that I'd want to go back to the old style of phones, which rely on a keypad to navigate around the menu system. The great thing about the Diamond is that you can literally just touch the icons on the screen and it will take you directly to the application you want to use. The phones main functions are arranged in a horizontal menu and can be reached by stroking the screen in the direction you want to go. A nice feature of Touch-Flo includes the user's ability to zoom in on web pages and text pages by gently stroking the screen in a circular motion. It is a very tactile phone; you feel like you are stroking a pet all the time! The animation is smooth and the whole user experience is sleek and beautiful.
The
phone also functions as a pocket PC using the Windows 6.1 Mobile operating system. In adition to the horizontal phone menu, there is a normal windows style desktop menu, which makes it easy to use for those familiar with windows. It also has mobile versions of all the programmes you would expect from Microsoft, including Word and Media Player. This makes it easy to sync with my PC at home.
One of the best features of this phone is the Internet Sharing application. As long as I've got internet access with my network, I can simply connect the phone to my notebook computer via the supplied USB cable and use it as an internet router. This means I can literally have broadband anywhere I take my computer. I found this feature to be esspecially useful.
Another good feature is the Push E-Mail facility, letting me get my emails straight to the screen of my phone. It is also easy to set up; all you have to do is enter your e-mail and password and the phone automatically retrieves all the information it needs from your email provider. You can even read a preview of your emails without even opening your inbox. I'd also like to highlight the convenience of being able to take a photo and then email it, or upload it onto facebook etc. almost instantly. It has certainly changed the way I think of and use my phone.
I have to say, I didn't think the games were very good. They are limited and there are not many new games available to download for this phone, so I would not recommend it to someone who likes to use their phone for gaming.
The Diamond has intergrated GPS, which is very useful as you don't have to carry around a seperate device to use sat nav on journeys. It also includes all the software you need to use the GPS in conjunction with Googlemaps, which I found extremely convenient.
With this phone I found I hardly ever had a problem getting a signal to make a call or to get internet access. However, In contrast, I found the talk time and stand-by time did not live up to expectations and I found that I had to charge the handset about every 12 hours, even with very low usage and low screen brightness. The internet usage especially wears down the battery life and makes the handset very hot to the touch, which can be unpleasant.
Another way in which the phone disappointed me was when the memory starts to fill up, the processor slows right down. I've read a few reviews in which users have reported that the phone was very slow, and this could be due to the fact that they stored a lot of information on the phone. I tended not to keep a lot of photos or music in the phone's memory, prefering to download pictures and documents onto my PC on a daily basis.
Another problem which these phones tend to have is software glitches. Sometimes the alignment of the touch screen cannot be calibrated correctly, and after having the phone replaced once for this very problem, I found out that it is quite common.
The phone does come with a camera, but considering that the photo software included is of a very high calibre, it is a shame that it is only 3.2 megapixels.
One thing I might warn buyers about is a problem I had with transfering videos to my PC. For some reason, when I transfer the videos I've recorded with my phone, over to my PC the sound is lost. I have been told that this is due to an incompatibility with Windows Vista, so if you have vista and you're considering using this phone as a video recorder, it won't work.
In conclusion, taking all things into account, this phone's good features far outwiegh the inconvenience of it's problems and I wouldn't change it now that I've discovered it. I'm considering upgrading to the next model, hoping they've managed to improve the camera resolution and battery life.
This is the ideal phone for anyone who likes computers and wants to be able to fit all their PC or notebook features in their pocket. Altogether, some excellent features packaged in a very attractive shell.
