I know, I'm really controversial, whenever I eat it, I know I'll have a sore throat afterwards, but who cares, I need my chocolate rush every once in a while!
Today was the day, I had this craving again. I decided to hop on my bike and race to the nearby supermarket. When I got to the frozen stuff section, I noticed that my favourite brand 'ben & jerry's' was gone. I was ready to start screaming, but suddenly I saw this gold-ish coloured tub..I looked closer, the package read: Häagen-Dazs Belgian Chocolate'. I remembered a review I've read here on ciao, about the quality of this brand, so I decided to just take the 500ml tub to try it out.(this flavour is also available in 100ml mini cups)
PRICE ---------
I didn't look at the price tag, because I was in 'rush mode' and when the cashier said 'that's €5,95 (which is equal to £ 4,20)', I probably looked at her in a shocked way, because she had this weird expression on her face, I mean, that's a whole lot of money for 500ml. But since I don't mind to spent loads of money on a piece of soap, I decided to just take it, but it better be worth my money.

LOOKS --------
The tub really looks fancy and expensive, and I'm glad it did, because that's the only positive thing I discovered about this particular flavour. I bought the 500ml tub, but I felt it looked a lot smaller than other tubs from different brands, I guess it might have something to do with the colours. The layout of the tub is divided into 2 sections; the left one is gold-ish with this curly design, and the right one is bordeaux red. The word Häagen-Dazs is placed inside a white section with nice curly gold-ish edges in the centre of the package. There's an image of curled up pieces of chocolate in the left section, and the name of the flavour is in the right one. The tub is made from strong carton, it doesn't bend at all, and quite firm in comparison with other brands.
When I removed the lid, I was pleased to see that the tub was covered with some sort of white plastic, with the words ‘Häagen-Dazs' written in black, fancy letters. This is definitely a plus, because I know other brands don't have this. It makes it look fresher and more expensive.
Well, I removed the plastic foil, and looked at the richly filled tub. The dark chocolate looked and smelled perfect to me. It really had this heavy chocolaty scent that I love so much. However, I noticed these little darker pieces in it..
TASTE --------
The package said this: "Calling all chocoholics! The deepest, darkest, most delicious chocolate ice cream in its smoothest form, combined with real chocolate fudge which melts on your tongue...heaven."
Woow, this must be something really extraordinary, let's have a taste then..
I grabbed a spoon, and took a first bite. I immediately felt the little darker pieces in my mouth, and I have to say, it didn't feel particularly nice. It felt like exfoliating pieces, rather than chocolate.
The chocolate ice cream itself tasted fairly bitter, but the little pieces really started to annoy me after the 3rd bite. They grind in your mouth; it feels like they shouldn't actually be in there. It might be that my tub just is a bad one, but I suppose I wouldn't be that lucky ;).
The package claims that it filled with "rich, dark, creamy Belgian chocolate blended with pure, sweet cream and mixed with soft chocolate fudge" Well, I didn't see any fudge at all, or maybe the little dark chunks were supposed to be fudge, but it really didn't taste like it at all. And since I live in the Netherlands, I'm quite familiar with Belgian Chocolate, but this ice cream doesn't even come close to that taste. I didn't think it tasted creamy and rich and I just hated the little chunks, although normally I love chunks of brownie in my ice cream.
It's been 30 minutes since I tasted it, and I still have this awkward, bitter taste in my mouth, which really feels unpleasant.
Overall, I think this is one of the worst flavours I've ever had, and to think I paid so much money for this, I'd rather spend it on something else. I do like the package and the extra plastic cover up, but that's the best I can do.
OTHER INFORMATION --------
Some other flavours that are available: Strawberry, Strawberry Cheesecake, Caramel Cream, Pralines and Cream, Vanilla, Vanilla Pecan, Vanilla Caramel Brownie, Cookies and Cream, Tiramisu.
I've taken 2 faq from their website, and added it here, because I know that these are important things to consider.
"Do you use raw eggs in your ice cream? Häagen-Dazs uses only fresh egg yolk which has been double pasteurised making it safe for consumption. The egg yolk acts as a natural emulsifier which helps the texture and body of the ice cream, it also provides a delicate flavour.
Is Häagen-Dazs suitable for vegetarians? All our ice cream products are suitable for lacto-ovo vegetarians. The fat content of Häagen-Dazs ice cream is derived purely from fresh cream and the emulsifying agent is egg-yolk. Häagen-Dazs Sorbets contain the gelling agent pectin (which is derived from fruit), thus holding to our commitment to use only the finest, pure natural ingredients."

I don't know if I'm actually going to try another flavour, but I've read some positive reviews, so who knows, but never this one again..never! Thanx for reading this op,
Advantages: Tastes heavenly, the keep-fresh plastic covering, indulgent-looking packaging Disadvantages: Disappointment for those expecting chocolate fudge, expensive, strange consistency if left for ages in freezer
...far, regardless of my mood, Haagen-Dazs Belgian Chocolate Ice Cream is my companion of choice.
Its tub is designed to make even the most PMT stricken/angst ridden female (or male- minus the PMT of course) feel like royalty. A deep burgundy dominates my 500ml (430g) cardboard tub (for those who are attempting to find the path to joy in smaller doses individual portion-sized “mini cups” are also available) with gold and white mosaic patterning (interrupted ... ...the ice cream gorgeously. Why Haagen-Dazs claim on the tub that these are ‘chocolate fudge’ is beyond me…they are flakes of dark chocolate, pure and simple…and they are heavenly.
My only quibble would be that, after a long time sitting in the freezer, the plastic covering having been removed (and how often is that likely to happen?) the top layer of the ice cream goes a bit soft and crystallises. The only thing I can liken this too is being furry ...

Advantages: Taste's yummy, treat yourself, chocolate's good for you Disadvantages: Fattening, Expensive, slight bitter after taste
This is the first opinion I have written in a while and I have chosen to write on my favourite thing which is food!
Tonight my hubby, Malcolm surprised me by buying me a small tub of Belgian Chocolate Haagen Dazs. Haagen Dazs is one of my favourite ice creams followed closely by Ben and Jerry’s and Carte Dore. I suppose I’d like to say I’m somewhat of an ice cream Connoisseur. What I don’t understand is what is it about Belgian and chocolate why ... ...fantastic chocolate treats year after year? I mean we never see London Chocolate or American chocolate.
Haagen Dazs have caught onto the fact that Belgian produce incredible chocolate and have created their very own Belgian chocolate ice cream in a nice tub.
The small tub of 100ml can be bought for around £1.25 or bigger tubs starting from around £4.00. Although some would say this is expensive or even extortionate I think it tastes so fabulous ...

...do is tell you what Haagen-Dazs say about their own product :)
"Calling all chocoholics! The deepest, darkest, most delicious chocolate ice cream in its smoothest form, combined with real chocolate fudge which melts on your tongue...heaven."
The reason I'm cheating and quoting the company on this is that I really couldn't put it better myself! (But I'm going to have to try, aren't I, or else you'll be mean and give me bad ratings...) If you are ... ...considered the smell anyway)
Haagen-Dazs ice cream comes in pint tubs. These are round cardboard cartons with plastic lids. On the tub there is the Haagen-Dazs logo and a picture of some squares of chocolate to tempt you :) Most flavours, including Belgian Chocolate are also available in mini cups- these are the little tubs you might find at the cinema or in blockbusters. Personally I like my ice cream tubs as big as possible!
One thing that will ...

Reviews which might be of interest for "Haagen-Dazs Belgian Chocolate Ice Cream"
Advantages: Chocolate, chocolate and more chocolate Disadvantages: It's expensive.
I had been a long-time lover of HaagenDazsBelgianChocolateIceCream, that was until I discovered Ben and Jerry's during a sordid visit to my Local UCI.
This particular flavour is my current favourite along with Chocolate Fudge Brownie (are we sensing a theme here yet?). Phish Food is a luxurious chocolateicecream, with fish shaped chocolate pieces and marshmallow entwined within it's chocolately loveliness.
You may be thinking horrible thoughts about there being marshmallow in this icecream, which is why I am here to tell you otherwise, for the marshmallow is not in the form of great big lumps as you may have expected. Instead the marshmallow is lovely and smooth and somewhat blended into the chocolate - absolute heaven.
The mixture of chocolateicecream, chocolate pieces and marshmallow tastes just gorgeous. This ...
Advantages: Everything! Disadvantages: I can't stop eating it once I start and I spend way to much money on this
HaagenDazsBelgianChocolateIceCream has to be my absolute favourite icecream by a long shot. For me, no other icecream even comes close! I've been a lover of this icecream for many years, so I was over the moon when I craved it throughout my pregnancy with my daughter. My partner will tell you that cravings are mind over matter, and that pregnant women only crave what they want to eat. Well, I certainly have no "want" to sit and eat chalk (or plasterboard might I add) and never have other than during my three pregnancies. So I can say that I know for a fact that cravings are real and that pregnant women do not have control over them. However, I have to admit (and please don't tell my partner) that the HaagenDazsBelgianChocolateIceCream was probably more of a want than a need.

Advantages: Chocolatey and creamy Disadvantages: Quite expensive
I don't often eat icecream but when I saw that HaagenDazsBelgianChocolate was on offer for £3 for a 500ml tub, I thought I'd treat myself. It usually costs between £3.50 and £4.00.
The packaging is a very nice part deep red and part gold carton with a plastic lid. The 500ml tub is a handy size for keeping in the freezer as it does not take up much room. A 500ml tub usually lasts me and my other half about two weeks.
The icecream itself has a lovely texture. It is very soft and creamy so you don't have to dig away at it for ages just to get some out of the tub! This kind of texture is fairly typical of HaagenDazsicecream which makes it a really good accompaniment for warm desserts as it melts into a lovely cream. This particular icecream has shavings of dark chocolate which melt in your mouth as you eat it making it a bit more ...
