Häagen-Dazs. I always thought this meant something deep and meaningful in one or other of the Scandinavian languages, something professing the wonders of an ancient Nordic ice cream tradition. Today, whilst doing a little background reading for this review, I have found out that this belief is completely and utterly wrong. Häagen-Dazs is American. Häagen-Dazs is a nonsense word, meaning nothing at all, made up by some marketer who thought it sounded good. Häagen-Dazs was born in 1961, making it slightly older than Ben and Jerry’s, but hardly ancient or traditional. In fact, it has only been available to us Brits since 1987, despite international distribution beginning back in 1982. Perhaps this is because the Americans think we are boring and unadventurous in our ice cream choices over here. Mind you, given that the best selling flavours in the UK are vanilla and chocolate though, it seems maybe they were right in this! Still, the flagship Leicester Square Häagen-Dazs café in London reports that with its more cosmopolitan mix of customers, strawberry cheesecake is actually their best seller – which just goes to show that I am more adventurous in my choice of dessert than the average Briton. (Although not as much as the average Japanese consumer: they apparently go for Green Tea flavour over there).
I ended up buying my tub of adventurous ice cream when I was struck by an uncontrollable urge for strawberry ice cream in Morrisons. Yes, they had a dozen other choices that would have cost me less than £3-odd for a tiddly 500ml tub, but I have found in my vast ice cream consuming experience that (a) cheap soft-scoop strawberry ice cream tastes nothing like either strawberries or ice cream should, and (b) most of the other options were Morrisons own brand, which have I found to be distinctly lacking in quality. My usual choice in such a situation would have been to head straight for the Ben and Jerry’s, but Morrisons (or at least my Morrisons) doesn’t stock it. By a process of elimination, I was left with Häagen-Dazs Strawberry Cheesecake flavour, a whole new culinary adventure for me.
Sadly, upon popping the lid off (at home – even I have enough self control to not eat it in the middle of Morrisons) I found that I had not bought strawberry ice cream at all; I had bought cheesecake ice cream with strawberry sauce and little biscuit pieces in it. The smug amongst you may now take the opportunity to tell me that I should have read the label before spending that sort of money on it. Please, go ahead, I won’t begrudge you. Well, except to point out that it was written in teensy little letters, and that I am sure I am not alone in assuming from the title that this was a predominantly strawberry-based concoction. But, being a brave and adventurous type in the dessert department, I ate it anyway and really rather enjoyed the experience.
The main body of the ice cream is the pale creamy colour of top-notch vanilla ice cream – well, it essentially is top-notch vanilla ice cream, so this really shouldn’t be surprising. Blended into it, though, is a small amount of cream cheese preparation that produces a delicate but distinctive flavour of cheesecake, and has the smooth, dense, creamy texture that any seasoned Häagen-Dazs eater would come to expect. You might well think that such a mixture may produce quite a cloying and overly rich taste, but on the whole it has avoided this, although it is certainly one of the richer ice creams that I have tried. The strawberry sauce, according to the label, makes up a mere 14% of this ice cream, so you are going to have to hunt quite hard to find it, but when you do, it is very pleasant and tastes of proper strawberries and not strawberry flavouring, which is always a good thing I feel. The biscuity bits are more liberally scattered, though. They are described as being “pecan nut cookie pieces”, but thankfully taste nothing like pecans at all – they are just the crumbly bases that you get on cheesecakes and taste more like digestives than anything else.
So what is my overall verdict? Well, as a taste experience, this was perfectly enjoyable although not as more-ish as other flavours I have tried. The ice cream was good quality and it evoked the flavour of strawberry cheesecake well enough, even though it had far less strawberry in it than you might be led to believe by the packaging. It also ticked the boxes of having no additives or preservatives in it, and it is suitable for ovo-lacto vegetarians. However, it is expensive for such a portion and not terribly good for you, either – all that fresh cream, cream cheese, butter and sugar combine to give it a whopping 266 calories and 16g fat per 100g (a fifth of the tub, not very much at all). There is also one other black mark against this ice cream, and that is that Ben and Jerry produce a far superior strawberry cheesecake flavour for the same price. Their ice cream has more strawberries, is lighter and less sickly, and I think it produces a more enjoyable all-round eating experience that Häagen-Dazs on this occasion just couldn’t quite match. On the basis of this ice cream alone, I would give Häagen-Dazs strawberry cheesecake four stars, but in comparison to the competition, I just have to knock one off.
So there you have it. If you prefer the cheesecake side of things, go for this ice cream – if you are more of a strawberry fan, go for the Ben and Jerry version. On the whole I would recommend Häagen-Dazs strawberry cheesecake flavour for its good quality, wide availability and pleasant flavour, although I think this is far from the best ice cream out there.

Häagen-Dazs costs between about £3.20 and £3.80 for a 500ml tub, depending on where you buy it. You can also often get it on a “2 for £5” basis in many supermarkets, and Blockbuster seem to have this as a permanent offer in their bigger stores as well.
Advantages: Creamy ice cream, real strawberry pieces, biscuit pieces Disadvantages: The price, the calories and fat content!!
I first came across Haagen-Dazs Strawberry Cheesecake Flavour Ice Cream when one of my friends bought it round when we were having a DVD night and to be honest, nearly every time I settle down for the evening to watch a DVD, this ice cream comes out.
About Haagen-Dazs
Haagen-Dazs is unsurprisingly an American Brand and wasn't actually available to buy in the UK until 1987. Haagen-Dazs actually only started out with three flavours: vanilla, chocolate ... ...gold in colour which is Haagen-Dazs colours. The lid is black and so is the band that runs around the middle of the tub. The Haagen-Dazs logo is written on the front of the tub, and the flavour is written on the black band. There is also a picture of a few strawberries on the front.
Price
I tend to buy this ice cream at Tesco where it costs £3.78 for a 500ml tub so compared to other ice creams, it's a bit more expensive but worth every penny. Occasionally ...

Advantages: Delicious flavour, rich, creamy and more-ish! Disadvantages: It's not raspberry and it's expensive!
When I go to the cinema, I just HAVE to have ice cream. Ben and Jerry’s is my favourite, but Haagen Dazs comes a close second, which is just as well because two out of three of the cinemas I regularly visit have Haagen Dazs cafes! One of my favourite flavours is Strawberry Cheesecake. This is surprising really because I have never been a huge fan of strawberries themselves (not in the way that some people enthuse over them!), let alone strawberry ... ...sickly and have a taste all of their own which is nothing like strawberries! Haagen Dazs Strawberry Cheesecake ice cream is another matter entirely!
The ice cream itself is creamy and fairly plain. I wouldn’t say it was vanilla as it doesn’t have a strong vanilla taste, and has the slight sharpness of cheesecake. This is ideal for me, as I have always loved cheesecake, but since becoming a vegetarian I rarely get to have cheesecakes as the majority ...

...op, with my tub of Haagen-Dazs Strawberry cheesecake perched on the table, my cat is peering up at my treat eager to get the leftovers (what a horrible word). I am half way through some really strenuous “revision”, and my mum will do anything to keep me happy, and more to the point, keep me working. Yesterday I seized advantage of her vulnerability, and asked for a tub of Haagen-Dazs, to keep my energy levels up you see. It was a bit of a far fetched ... ...to this, and every other Haagen-Dazs in the whole country. That is, of course, the price. For a tub of this ice cream, my poor Mummy was made £2.89 poorer. It took me three-quarters of an hour to finish it off, meaning that the indulgence was an expensive one, at £3.60 an hour! And I know, it is, quite frankly, disgustingly greedy to eat a whole tub in one go, but I did it for Ciao, and the purpose of this review, so I think it is fair. I think, ...

Advantages: A nice creamy mix of Strawberry, Pecan Cookie and ice cream Disadvantages: Becomes very sickly after too much
I’m finding it pretty hard to write music ops at the moment, just haven’t got the time to do them, but I am managing to work my way through old half started ops that just need little bits adding to them to finish them off. This of course in one such op on Strawberry Cheesecake flavoured Haagen Dazs.
Now to be perfectly honest I am not usually one to buy expensive ice cream like your Carte D’or, Haagen Dazs or Ben & Jerry’s. I prefer your common ... ...pizza from Pap Johns I got a tub of ice cream free with it and as they only do Haagen Dazs I decided to go for this flavour. So liking Cheesecake and Strawberry’s I really couldn’t go wrong. So having made myself comfortable in front of the Tele, I finished off the pizza and moved onto the desert. The tubs pretty simple holds about 500ml of ice cream and would normally have set me back the princely sum of almost £4. Now this does sound rather expensive ...

Advantages: Different from the usual Disadvantages: expensive
I have been reading all the opinions on different Haagen Dazs ice creams so I thought I would add one of my favourites. The strawberry cheesecake variety of this brand is as rich and luxurious as its counterparts but just that little bit different from the usual chocolate or toffee type offerings.
This variety features cheesecake flavoured ice cream with ripples of strawberry puree running through it and little bits of the cruched biscuit base you ... ...cream is creamy but not to sweet as it has the tang of a really good cheesecake and this is balanced by a touch of sweetness in the strawberry puree. However, my favourite bit has to be the crunchy bits of biscuit base hiding in the ice cream but then that is my favourite bit in a cheesecake anyway!
This ice cream is ideal, I have found, for sharing with your best mate over a coffee and a really good gossip in the garden on a sunny afternoon. It ...

haagen's adiction...
I really recommend this producto to anyone who loves chocolate. If you just like chocolate, I'd say you'll like this one too, but you could also find this purity is a bit too high... Anyway, give it a chance, and don't say NO looking at the price of this product (the worst thing of this brand).
Finally, I'd like to say this haagen's got another diferents flavours, like HaagenDazs Cookies and cream, HaagenDazs Creme caramel pecan, HaagenDazs Sorbet-chocolate, HaagenDazs Baileys icecream, HaagenDazs cookie dough, HaagenDazs vanilla caramel brownie, HaagenDazs Vanilla icecream, HaagenDazs Banoffee caramel pie, HaagenDazs Choc choc chip icecream, HaagenDazsicecream dairy cookies and cream, HaagenDazsicecream lemon cheesecake, HaagenDazsicecream praline and cream and HaagenDazsstrawberry ...

Haagen-Dazs Choc Choc Chip Icecream I have to admit is not my favourite icecream but if I am feeling like a bit of chocolate indulgence in a frozen form then this is definitely the perfect choice.
ABOUT HAAGENDAZHaagen Daaz launched its first three flavours; Vanilla, Chocolate and Coffee back in 1961 in America and it wasn't long before the demand for this particular brand of icecream went nationwide, but it wasn?t until 1987 that HaagenDaz first appeared on UK shelves and ever since then we have been trying and tasting all sorts of Haagen-Dazicecream flavours from Strawberrycheesecake to Chocolate chip cookie dough and so on.
