I recently looked after a hamster for a friend...I found it so hard to part with her when she came to collect her - I HAD to get one of my own. What's the first thing a Hamster needs?
A CAGE
Choosing the Hamster was the easy part, she was the first one I looked at..pale golden fur and big black ears, and the cutest face. Choosing the cage however, was not so easy.
A lot of the cages I looked at were all very attractive and had many floors connected by a network of plastic tubing, but looking at these, all I could think of was - once the Hamster is in there, How on earth are you going to get her out again without taking the whole thing apart?!
The metal framed cages looked sturdy - but boring. The ones that did have special gaps to attach tubing, cost a fortune. I was feeling rather despondent when I suddenly noticed a cage by HABITRAIL ( a leading brand in hamster care) call SAFARI.

The fact that it was entirely made from plastic made me think it may not last as long as a conventional metal one - but at that price....who cares!!!!

FUN AND GAMES
Ok - the pressure's on when you are trying to assemble a new home for a new Hamster and your son is trying his best to keep her entertained! I found that the pieces of the cage were fairly difficult to snap together. At one stage I thought it was going to break as I had to apply a fair amount of pressure in order to fit the pieces together snugly. The cage bars are fairly difficult to put into the notches (the bars are NOT plastic btw), the tubes (add on set- prices later) were extremely tricky to put togehter and seemed wobbly and precarious, although they weren't really. The extra bits are supposed to simply "snap" into the special holes provided...and although I agree that they do...it takes a knack to do it at first- and a lot of practice.
WELL WORTH IT
I would have to say that it is well worth it..because the hamster really seems to enjoy it..it is really easy to clean...as it comes apart a lot easier that it puts together.
ADDICTIVE
Extra bits such as tubing, wheels, outposts in similar safari style don't come cheap....I paid an extra £10 for about 12 inches of tubing and another £12 for a restaurant compartment. Little bits of tubing start at around £2.50. There are plenty of little extras, extra rooms etc etc - trouble is - they're addictive and I was finding that I was buying something new every time payday came around!!
I have had mine for about three months now. It is slightly chewed around the edges but it is still secure and still looks really good.
The most important factor however;
MY HAMSTER LOVES IT!!
She sleeps in the restaurant, uses the bedroom as a toilet and stashes her food in the tubes...but hey..that's not HABITRAIL'S FAULT!
Advantages: Good quality adaptable cages create a nice environment Disadvantages: Quite expensive and fairly hard to clean/put back together again
I bought a Habitrail cage and accessories for my hamsters, and have mixed feelings about it. What I got was the "safari" cage with lots of tube attachements and extra "space station"-type room, bedroom and maze unit. The thing that attracted me to it was the fat that it wasn't an obtrusive colour, like a lot of hamster cages can be (it's predominantly khaki green), it fits in well with my lounge, and looked like good fun for my hamsters. It fits ... ...quite difficult to separate the tubes from eachother, as they're connected by little rubber rings, and it takes leverage from a knife or other impliment to get them apart for cleaning. Both the hamsters loved the fact that although it was a cage, there were attached tubes to the bedroom and so they were both able to have space, and burrow in their tunnels too. The wheel in the cage is the best I've seen too, as it's a generous size and has got a ...

...'Seapets' and browsed through the Habitrail and Rotastak collection of cages. Knowing these cages were way too good for our little hammy we decided to move on, a few minutes later when we still hadn't decided on a suitable cage so the shop assistant came over and gave us some help and assistance, he showed us this 'Habitrail' cage, we told him we only had £20 and he said that's lucky, the cage is £20! The cage itself is called the 'Habitrail Safari Cage' and is dark green in colour. (Safari colour!) Although it is quite small you can add on tubes, sleeping compartments, mazes and lots more too though all at extra costs. We stuck with the cage and our little ...

HABITRAIL SAFARI CAGE
ABOUT THE COMPANY & HABITRAIL
Habitrail are owned by Rolf C Hagen, but one of their warehouses is based near where I live at Whitwood, West Yorkshire.
There are plenty of pet shops who stock Habitrail products throughout the UK.
Habitrail cages have been around for the last 10 years or so, they started with the larger cages such as Circus Unit, Park Unit, Home unit and another design (sorry ... ...is suitable with all other Habitrail accessories should you get fed up of the safari theme and want to add some colour.
PRICE
Prices start from as little as £2.99 or less for the tubes and go up to £30.00 for the larger items which is a lot more reasonable then some of the cages on the market.
When you first purchase any of these items it is best to get an adult to put these together as little fingers are likely to get trapped ...

Advantages: Good for the hamster, looks good, easy to clean. Disadvantages: First time assembly can be quite difficult
When I decided it was time that "Foley" needed a new cage, I decided to get him something a little more exciting than your usual run-of-the-mill metal bars style home. I got him a habitrail. The safari cage comes complete with stickers to give your hamster's new home a distinctly, well, odd look. However, the tunels and runs that he had were much more greatly appreciated. With seperate "apartments" for sleeping, eating, and playing, as well as a ... ...as it's predecessors, Foley was in hamster heaven. Even better is the fact that, with numerous tunels, and just about endless configurations for your various sections, you can change the hamster's house if you like. And if you choose to leave it exactly as it is to start with, well, then that is just like the hamster's natural habitat.
The hamster will gain a great deal from this style of house - firstly, by placing his food and bedding in areas ...

Advantages: Adequete ventilation, attractive, fun for pet. Disadvantages: Quite small, additional tubing etc can be expensive.
I recently brought a habitrail playground although it is basically the same as the safari but in different colours. I purchased it from Pampurred Pets for only £19.99. My first thoughts of this hamster cage were very good, i liked the fact that it came with a wheel, water bottle and food bowl. I also like that although it is a plastic cage, the hamster will still get plenty of ventilation as there are still some bars unlike many other plastic hamster ... ...cage, you would be better off getting soem of the additional tubing as well to make the cage more interesting and to give your pet more to do. A disadvantage of this cage is that it is fairly small. After buying one of these cages i felt that it was too small for my hamster, and therefore bought another one the same and connected the two together using tubing. To buy a set of tubing costs from £8.00 - £14.99 and i bought it from Pampurred Pets for ...
