I have owned many large, spacious and comfortable vehicles; both 4x4s and cars (Mitsibishi Shoguns, Mercedes...). However, now on my second Discovery (a '52 Reg' TD5 GS) I can safely say that the LandRover has blitzed the others. It offers a unique blend of ruggedness and comfort without sacrificing luxury. When I bought my first Discovery, again a TD5 back in 2000, friends of mine were sceptical of my choice of Diesel over the V8 petrol. However, when they experienced the smoothness and adequacy of the Turbocharged 5-cylinder unit they quickly congratulated me on my choice. Also in terms of MPG the TD5 offers around 25-30 compared to the horrific consumption of the V8. , In particular the SE model. The SE come's with numerous home comforts and gadgets that make driving a snap, and if you want great in car audio you don't have to look any further as they are fitted with a 6CD changer with 4 way speaker system and sub woofer as standard. Again with the SE you get heated seating / mirrors, fully adjustable seating ( Electronically ) excellent sound proofing, air conditioning and ton's more.

weighted. Braking is strong and affective with ABS working well. Going through snow and ice has been very easy, but you have to watch for over-confidence since despite ABS, Traction Control, EBD etc. it can still perform a 4-wheel skid on ice and with 2.2 tonnes plus can make a nasty mess of anything it collides with.

Overall impressions are that under BMW control the Discovery quality problems just evaporated and this has been borne out by the very minor problems we hve encountered. Dealer service is good, although the local dealer (Tay LandRover) service reception could be a bit more organised ...
