Story: You are Gordon Freeman (the man who made the crowbar famous) a scientist working at the Black Mesa facillity, whilst working on an experiment to create a new substance somthing goes wrong, unable to shut down the problem you are knocked out. You then begin to have visions. Luckily you are not dead protected by your HEV (hazard suit) you come round. All around you there is destruction scientists and guards crumpled on the floor lie in there own blood. You must find out the what happened to Black Mesa and escape at all costs.
Gameplay: This game revolutionised FPS and is really stunning while you wander the black mesa complex you can do almost anything you can break glass crawl through spaces, press buttons, pull levers, smash crates. There are lots of interactive things which makes the game seem much more whole.
The atmosphere is unriveled in any game yet, it is just so chilling and believe me this game is every bit as scary as Doom 3, you hear strange noises as you walk round corners you never know what will happen doors crash down as aliens tear through them or you can just watch the zombie aliens feed off your human companions. Play this game on a dark night and trust me you wont sleep soundly.
Now we havent talked about guns and guns are what makes an FPS so lets get down to the dirt, to blast the aliens you have an arsenal of 14 different weapons the:
Most of these weapons also have an alternate fire for example the 9mm can fire at twice the speed but with reduced accuracy, you might have noticed that there is no Sniper Rifle but thats what the crossbow is for. For extra stopping power you can also man gun turretsto really blow your enemies away.
NPCs: The game is full of NPCs ( non playable characters ) who will aid you or try to destroy you, on the good side we have the
Scientists: all they can do is open doors for you though most of the time the only time you'll see a scientist is when hes dead. If you are lucky enough to find a living scientist he will usually just tell you that hes not coming with you.
Security guards: armed with a 9mm these guys can actually fight ! They will follow you and you can tell them to wait. If you attack them they will shoot at you and yes they do die.
Erm well thats it now let me tell you about all the baddies you will find:
Headcrab: Lets just say small but effective these things will leap at you at latch on your head sucking away your health. Guns are pretty useless dealing with these things as they are so small use the crowbar.
Zombie Alien: Slow shuffling zombies they are pretty dim and can usually be beaten with a crowbar, if they do manage to hit you you will take fair damage so watch it.
Alien Slave: These really do look evil they have an electricity attack which charges up and fires a powerful energy blast. Get rid of 'em quick.
Barnacle: They have long tentacles which hang down from the ceiling ready to pick up dim witted prey, if they capture you shoot them before they bite or you've had it !
Houndeye: Aliens come in all shapes and sizes this alien is like a dog and makes doglike sounds they have an energy wave attack which will hurt so keep away. Although they are aliens they are nicer than your average aliens so if you dont let off a volley of bullets at them they may let you past unscathed.
Bullsquid: Seal-esque creature but no where near as nice these foul creatures spit purple goop at you.
Alien Grunt: These guys are the alien foot soldiers they will call for backup and have advanced weaponary. The shotgun is particularly useful against this goon.
Tentacle: This is a plant alien, it is huge and if you shoot it it will undoubtedly eat you. You can sneak past them if they are distracted.
Ichthyosaur: This is actually not an alien at all but a dinosaur, these creatures live in water and can swim at high speeds. Do NOT get in the bath with one of these.
Snark: Alien creatures you can gain control of but due to there weak minds they will attack anything and everything. Yes that includes you.
Garg: If you invade this beasts territory it will destroy you. Dont bother trying to take this thing out with a headshot because it wont work. Sneak past it or use the RPG.
Controller: Flys and attacks with energy blasts. It flys fast so taking it down is really tricky.
Gonarch: This thing creates headcrabs, you will need the firepower of a small army to destroy this scum of the universe. Oh it also creates baby headcrabs which attack you. Baby headcrabs are smaller headcrabs which are difficult to kill time to get the crowbar out.
As if that wasnt enough he government think you have seen to much, they have sent there own troops into Black Mesa to eliminate the aliens and YOU. You will encounter:
Army Grunts: Basic soldier, equipped with assault rifle and with orders to take you down. They will work as a team so listen out for the radio chat.
Assasains: Is that Catwoman ? No it isnt these leather clad babes will shoot you with a silenced 9mm. What are you waiting for blast her !
Luckily thats it but remeber there are tons of them and only one of you so you will need to utilise all your skills to beat this 30 hour+ frag fest.
Play with your Friends (or enemies): This mode was never in the original Half Life but if this is what we get to replace Counterstrike its pretty lame, you get 6 maps to frag your opponent on. Thats it no capture the flag domination or anything else and you can only play with 1 opponent. You can also go through the game in co-op mode which sounds great but it is shoddy and I have noticed some bugs. No worries though the main game is class and these things are just minor distractions.
Controls: Now this is actually a big issue, controls I can tell you are not as good as a mouse and keyboard, but they are perfectly adequete and you will get used to it. You do also get a rumble which you cant get from a mouse and keyboard. BUT for all of you who must have a mouse and keyboard the PS2 has 2 USB ports to accomodate for you.
Graphics: The graphics are great, I think they are every bit as good as the PC despite what others say, sure a normal TV only supports 640x480 only 1/2 of what can be achieved on the PC but it still remains graphically sound, come on its a 7 year old game and you wont know it ! What more could you want ?
Sound: The games music is quiet creepy and very chilling adding to the incredible atmosphere of this game. You need to experiance this first hand.
Advantages: New concepts not seen in standard FPS, great graphics, addictive Disadvantages: Controls can get confusing, not as nice looking as the PC version
...devour and eat your flesh. Half-Life delivers such antics in a similar way but introduced new ideas and concepts that set Half-Life aside from standard FPS. Half-Life immersed the player in an interactive story, a computer generated film if you like. The kind of game where you could interact with other characters in the same boat as you, receive assistance from your fellow peers or just watch them suffer to their last breath. I will expand on this ... ...=========
As stated above Half-Life is different to most other FPS. For example in Quake 2 you are being flown to an alien planet to eliminate all life on it. On the way down you get blasted out of the sky and crash land somewhere on the planet. You begin the game AFTER the disaster; in Half-Life you begin the game BEFORE it. You start off in an underground metro heading to work. No action, no weapons, no monsters, just a normal day in Black Mesa. ...

Advantages: Great Graphics and AI Disadvantages: Too many puzzles for a FPS
This game was a legendary PC first person shooter and now its on the PS2.
I would prefer it on a PC but it still does the job.
This game has a huge arsenal of weaponary which include humon weapons and also the alien.
Lets talk fact : there are practicaly millions of FPS games where
you go around shooting alien scums but none feature a geeky scientist as the main character.
Gordon Freeman ( I think thats how you spell his name lol )
The huge ... ...storyline : Its an ordinary day at the science lab when an experiment goes wrong ( typical... ).Then you need to escape the underground lab and warn the world about all the aliens,then the swat guys come in,oh what a relief.NOT REALLY,the swat guys do shoot bad guys,but they have been ordered to kill everyone in the lab so there's no evidence( again...typical )
Seriously if you havn't played this where have you been,mars?
Uranus oh I forgot you ...

[Review taken from my website - http://www.ps2-central.co.uk]
Half - Life is one of the best games ever brought out for the PC and it earned Game Of The Year. Can it do the same on the PS2?
Well, to my opinion, it has! The graphics are revolutionary and well advanced for the PS2. The detail is absolutely brilliant including all the weird creatures that were scientists!
The game itself is cool - I am stuck on the second level which is the office ... ...get to the top and when you start, you see a scientist hanging on a ladder. After you climb the second ladder, he falls off and dies. It is the third ladder that I find impossible! I cannot jump onto it and then climb up. Anyone who knows either another way of completing the level or knows a technique to doing it, then please let me know!
The Decay mode is great because you can play with your mates co-operating with each other. The missions that ...

Advantages: great AI and realism Disadvantages: too many puzzles and platforms for me
Having never played the revolutionary PC game, mainly due to the medieval specifications of my computer, I decided to give the ps2 port of Halflife a run for its money:
The game offers a range of playmodes, the main being a single player quest, the same as the PC version but also a deathmatch mode and a co-operative mode are included. Unfortunately, this co-operative option, despite its promising appearance, proved to be awkward and frustratingly ... ...baddie blasting. The deathmatch also looked like an enjoyable addition to the package and although the arenas are interestingly structured and the variety of weapons is impressive, the absence of A I bots means that it becomes boring and repetitive very quickly. This makes the multiplayer aspects of the game obsolete when compared to the infinite options of Timesplitters 2 or Quake 3: Revolution.
This means that the game boils down to a single player ...

Advantages: an amazing game all round - no faults Disadvantages: none
of the most in-depth story lines I have ever come accross within a game, if you do however buy this game, see about getting HalfLife 1 too to get you into the full story! If you're not interested in buying number 1 too, you can just play HalfLife2 and it will fill you in on most of the story line as you progress.
IF you like a good, medium paced First Person Shooter with lots of horror and adventure then HalfLife2 is for you... Its now available on the PC, Xbox and PS3... And comes with many different "extra's"
Horror scenes are pretty good also, allowing you to fight aliens, zombies and other "genetically enhanced humans" and as you fight your way through the huge landscape, you come accross many different enemies, and many different problems which need solving! Including operating a crane, destroying lots of things and... Well, shooting ...
Advantages: the best console ever, only £150 Disadvantages: Only a 33.6k modem!
With the up and coming release of the PS2 in october, many people are confused about what console to buy. In my beliefs, I feel that the Dreamcast will be the supreme console to buy for christmas. With more online games coming such as Quake 3, Toy racer, Phantasy online, and Halflife, this is the defnite choice. The PS2 is relying heavily on Sequels, and movie like graphics promised can take years to be made. The dreamcast comes with modem, internet ready, and a free online game to play with, Chu Chu Rocket. The dreamcast also has one of the most antcipated games of all time, Shenmue. This game has taken 5 years to come up with, and it will blow the gaming industry like dynamite. So if you are looking for a powerful console with excellent games, wicked graphics and online gaming, buy a dreamcast. ...
Advantages: Everything about it, gripping story, great action, very immersive Disadvantages: slightly outdated these days (was released in November 19, 1998) but you wont care :)
My Personal Thoughts
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
HalfLife is a truely exceptional piece of gaming. I first played HalfLife when it was released on ps2 as i never had a PC at that time. However when i did get a PC HalfLife was straight into my collection. I thought he game was fantastic and unlike anything i had previously played. It had a gripping story that was very realisitc as you were at the hands of it all. In fact it was this game that got me into First Person Shooters (FPS) in the first place purely down to all the factors contained within this masterpiece of a game.
HalfLife is the story of Gordon Freemans work at the Black Mesa Research Lab. It starts off as a normal day, u come into work on the onboard train system (this is a great start to the game as you can see all around you and the goings on at Black Mesa) you ...
