I have been eager to use Online Banking for sometime now, and my bank seemed to be one the the last in line for it, however the wait is now over.
I have been using Halifax-Online banking for a few months now with what is relative ease.
In terms of setting up online banking the process is fairly simple and painless. Be aware though that you must have registered for 24-hour telephone banking with Halifax before you can go ahead and use Halifax-Online. Which is puzzling in many ways as 24-hour banking is normally standard with most banks and is not normally something you need to register for. However it does not take long, and customer services seems to be fairly good.
Key in your sort code and account number along with the specific digits requested from your telephone banking security number and continue to another page. On here are all the other main details required along with a full set of security questions which you will randomly be asked on login (Mothers First Name, Where you where born etc.).
The registration process really will not take long assuming you have all the relevant information at hand.
Once registered and your Online account is up and running everything you need pretty much is there.
You get a detailed statement covering all transactions in and out of your account. The facility to view accounts which you have setup to transfer money to. Direct debits on your account along with standing orders.
All of which can be deleted in seconds, or altered i.e. Date Change for a standing order.
Transferring money between accounts is also made fairly easy. Select the account from your list and key in the amount to transfer, confirm and it is done imediately.
You can apply for various other services online with Halifax too along with a WebSaver account which I have just recently setup.
The idea is simple, with WebSaver you can setup various savings accounts with various options available to you in terms of the length of time you cannot use the money and various rates of interest.
Each time you setup a new saver account you give it a personal name. i.e. Holiday Savings. Then you select the terms you would like on the account. Depending on the options you choose the amount of time before you can use any of the money in your savings account will vary for anything upto a whole year. Obviously the longer you agree to leave the money in there the higher the interest rate.
Money can be transferred in and out of the account with ease, and if requested you can have a cash card issued for the savings account.
Overall for those everyday banking things you end up sat on the phone discussing with a customer advisor can be done online quickly and efficiently with Halifax.
I have not yet come across any real downsides with Halifax-Online, but there again I have not used any other online services from their competitors so I am not sure what they have to offer.
Halifax-Online offer you all the basic everyday banking services you need with the added advantage of being able to do it anytime of the day and with the click of a button (well a few clicks!).
Halifax-Online is only compatible with Internet Explorer and PC only which is a downside. I have tried it on IE on the Macintosh and it goes nowhere, just redirects you to error pages.
In terms of security well like a lot of things you have to put your trust in the company and rely on them to make sure that their security is as high as possible.
There are a number of security questions which you will have to use, and a different security question is asked when you login along with your username and password.
All your transactions are secured with SSL so in theory there is no real possibility of anything happenind. Although one thing to note is a commong thing for people to do is leave the web browser open and go away from their machine, or to not log out correctly and a few click of the back button and your account is there for all to see. I think in a lot of cases particularly with personal finance it is a good idea to not only think about what the company your dealing with is doing in terms of security, but to make sure your personally taking the correct measures to maintain the security and confidentiality of your information.
One small re-assuring fact is the short statement on their website regarding online fraud which reads as follows:
'If a Halifax Online customer is a victim of fraud we guarantee that they won't lose any money on their Halifax account and will always be reimbursed in full.'
This may put a few minds at rest.
Oh and they even offer free anti-virus software fo you too.
Right I am going to go concentrate on making that million to send! ;o)
Advantages: Excellent rates. Good level of access. Easy to use. Disadvantages: Forms to fill in.
...you my opinion of the Halifax Websaver.
What is it?
~~~~~~~~~~~
The Halifax websaver is an online based savings account from (funnily enough) the Halifax.
What are it's features?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The websaver has many interesting features. Firstly you can give yourself different "pots" which you can name individually. This is basically like having several different accounts, but named which makes it more personal. How about "Bills Bread ... ...amounts of years and the Halifax offers 3 month, 6 month, 1 year, 2 year, 3 year, 4 year and 5 year bonds. The rates for the bonds are quite good too (See rates)
Lastly transfering money is very easy and you an also set up standing orders online. If you are transfering between two halifax accounts it is even easier and is done almost instantly.
How fast is it?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Transactions always seem to be completed very quickly, especially if ...
Advantages: ease of use, high interest rates, Disadvantages: nope
I joined Halifax Online last year and have had no problems with it. I am able to access my current account details 24 hours a day and every time I have tried to access the service it has been successful - I have never known the service to be down.
In order to register for the service you need to have a Halifax Current account and to have registered for their telephone banking service. This may seem strange, but what they do for extra security is ... ...not even the operators at Halifax Direct know all your details so the system is really secure.
Anyway, back to Halifax Online - you can view an up-to-date statement, and I mean UP TO DATE - if you go to a cash machine and take out some money it appears immediately on your transaction list. You can view and delete your direct debits, set up bill payments, pay bills, transfer money between accounts - basically pretty much everything you can do on ...
...I decided to give the Halifax Telephone Banking Service a try (the number of which was on my bank card).
Well, what a great choice it turned out to be! Give ‘em a bell, do the usual security checks (one of which requests a six digit PIN number) and hey presto – you’re in!
Using your telephone keypad and the automated menu system, you can access whatever personal account information need – all at the push of a button. Also, should you need further ... ...of staff.
Anyway, after a few months (when I’d finally got around to getting online at home) I decided to check out the range of online services available at www.halifax.co.uk. Well, what can I say? Very impressed!
Although the site can be a little slow at times (Macromedia Flash 3.0 is recommended for optimum viewing), the site is very easy to navigate and it also contains each of the services that are available over the phone ...
Reviews which might be of interest for "Halifax Online Banking"
Advantages: Plenty of articles, has some messageboards, excellant quotes facilities Disadvantages: They've just ditched their Shares portfolio service, which was light years better than any similar service on the 'net
I've been visiting their site on & off ever since I heard them get a mention... probably on some news programme like CNN or whatever, so when I eventually decided to take the plunge earlier this year and started investing in shares (via "Halifax Sharebuilder")... it was only natural I should use "The Fool" to search for tips, look-up some quotes + use their portfolio service as a back up to view how my shares were doing after the Halifax have closed that part of the share dealing part of their onlinebanking facility after midnight......and the fool.co.uk portfolio is / was alot easier to make sense of than any other service.
It was fairly straight forward.... a green smiley face to indicate shares in a particular company was doing well, a yellow smiley with a straight mouth :-| to indicate the price had stayed put, and a Red frowny ...
Advantages: you can see your balances online Disadvantages: hardly anywere accepts it
i was waiting for ages for my first card hoping you could use it online so that i could buy and sell on ebay mostly, but when it came i found out hardly anywhere accepts it including paypal. dont buy it stick with solo cards,
Instead of a cashcard like most banks teens, Halifax give you a Visa Electron.
You can use the Visa Electron with most popular online retailers, like Amazon.co.uk and Play.com so dont be put off to much but using it in the High street can be a problem as not many high street stores accept it (although more are starting to). But you can just go to a ATM to withdraw up to £300
Not bad for a teen account.
if you do have any idea of how to link it up to paypal that would be very helpful thanks ...
Advantages: An easy share dealing system to use Disadvantages: none- fairly competitive with rest of market
rare unless you are very experienced, and there are many internet rumors to encourage penny share investors to part with their money quickly).
If you are interested in building up a portfolio of penny shares on a budget or only have a small amount of money to invest, for regular monthly investments I would recommend you create a Halifax Share Builder account, where the commission charges for purchase of share is nominal. This is a service where Halifax buy in bulk on set days of the month, and dramatically reduce the commission costs for account holders.
Once your account is set up, it is simple enough to login through the Halifax website www.halifax.co.uk, follow the login options for onlinebanking.
The great thing about managing share dealing accounts with Halifax is that at no extra charge you can create multiple account ...
