Currently on an extended break from Ciao - quite happy to let my ops stand, but I'll not be adding to them for a while. Too much going on in the rest of life!

I had my very first savings account opened for me as a child with the Halifax, by my grandmother in Halifax, back when it was still a regional building society. And now? Now they have pretty much my whole financial life in their hands!
Their new websavers offer a very competitive rate of interest, and seeing as I would rather log on to the site than go into a branch suits me down to a T. The phone banking and online services are excellent, and when I do go to a branch, for the most part, the service is very good. Our local branch serves a very large area, and is always overcrowded and understaffed, but other branches, close to my work etc, are excellent.
Being able to move money between accounts instantly, 24 hours a day is a huge help (both between my own accounts, and to and from other members of my family who bank with them). And when I had my wallet stolen at 1am on New Years Eve, their phone staff were amazing (unlike some of my other cards)
A friend of mine recently opened an account with them on my recommendation, and was somewhat disappointed to see their charges for using other ATM's, (which don't apply to students) which seems somewhat counter to the whole point of the LINK network, but would agree that their service is a very strong point.

Advantages: Plenty of articles, has some messageboards, excellant quotes facilities Disadvantages: They've just ditched their Shares portfolio service, which was light years better than any similar service on the 'net
