Being the lazy person I am, I thought I'd open up a bank account over the net. How exciting! So I pottered along to the Halifax online page, answered a few question (lots of security so you feel OK about it all) and hey presto!! - You have a bank account.
But...OH NO!
You then have to wait for them to send you stuff through the post to confirm your identity and then you have to send back proof of ID. But not just one proof...FOUR. Unless of course you did what I did and go into a branch, use 2 IDs and get it sorted there. I'm sure it would have been far simpler and quicker if I had just gone in there in the first place. Oh well, it was an experience. But an experience I wouldn't really recommend.
As for the bank itself, when I visited them, they were pleasant and helpful and gave me all the leaflets that shoud have been sent through with my letter but weren't.
As I'm sure you are aware, Halifax claim to have the best interest rate out of most high street banks. Bonus.
As for the online bit...well, I'm still waiting for another code to be sent through the post before I can start using it. What a palava.Lets hope when it's finally up and running its good!!

I read your op to know if there were good %'s if it was too expensive to have an account ther, and to know something else about tranferring money, but you don't mention it at all, you could write the URL at least
See you

Advantages: Plenty of articles, has some messageboards, excellant quotes facilities Disadvantages: They've just ditched their Shares portfolio service, which was light years better than any similar service on the 'net
