I tried to open a Halifax Online Bank Account 3 weeks ago. I'm still waiting for a decision regarding my application.
I decided to open an account because of the excellent credit interest rate, and the fact that their website is easy-to-use. In fact, because of these things, I still want to open an account with them, despite the lousy customer service!
They say that "application decisions should be available within 48 hours". In fact, when I log in, and click on my account, it's still saying that, even though it's weeks since I furnished them with all the necessary details.
I've emailed their customer service, over the secure email, asking for a resolution to the problem. I really don't know why they bother having the email service though, because it took them a week to reply to me (even though they say they'll respond within 48 hours), and then they said they were unable to discuss my account over email, and that I should phone the helpline.
The helpline staff seem pretty friendly, but not very helpful. They're currently "investigating" the problem. Nobody can seem to figure it out.
I'll keep you posted as and when I get some sensible information out of them!

It's open! It only took them 5 weeks. And in that five weeks, I had a "reminder" through, saying I should be crediting the account each month, and that if I didn't I'd lose my overdraft facility. Which, given that as far as I was concerned, I didn't even have an account with them, was a bit rich.
Anyway, we'll see what happens next. Chances are that I'll not have another problem with the account for the next 5 years :)

I signed up to open a current account a week last Friday (After 5pm) and had all the necessary paperwork through by the Wednesday. I guess you must just have been unlucky.
I also sent a query via email at the beginning of this week and instead of getting a response within 48 hours,it was more like 4 days. However,it came with an apology for being slow but apparently they had been inundated with queeries. (They're all over the place nowadays !!!)
Advantages: Plenty of articles, has some messageboards, excellant quotes facilities Disadvantages: They've just ditched their Shares portfolio service, which was light years better than any similar service on the 'net
