I started out opening a Halifax Websaver online. I then printed off the documentation and took it down to my local Halifax branch with two forms of identification. That got the money laundering requirements out of the way and meant that once I'd received all the passwords in the mail, I could go ahead and open my Sharexpress account online straight away because I was already a customer. The Websaver pays a great rate of interest too, far better than what you get with some 50 day notice accounts.
The Halifax are one of the few online brokers who won't charge you to convert your paper share certificates into online stocks, which is great if you are like me and were drowning in hundreds of certificates with small amounts of shares for the same company. It tidied things up quite a bit. The shares are held in Nominee Names but don't worry, you still get your dividends etc. The main advantage is that you get to sell your shares much easier than with paper certificates when you have to ring round to get the best prices and then get balance certificates if you didn't sell your entire holding in one go.
In the early days I used to phone them up and ask them to send me a form in the post for converting paper share certificates to online stocks. I'd then fill that out and send it back with the share certificates, and then they'd send me a Crest transfer form and I'd send that back as well. Then I discovered that if I went to the main Halifax site they had all the transfer forms online, which you can just print off and send in, it saves a lot of hassle and you get your shares converted to online stocks within three days instead of ten days.
To be honest, I find the subject just as baffling as betting on horses!
Perhaps I can put it all down to a slightly over strict Calvinistic upbringing!

Wouldn't recommend. The interface is not user friendly at all. Have to go though too many steps to log in.
