I have just had my third truly outrageous experience of Halifax's total unconcern about its own mistakes. I sold a house and made out a cheque to a building society from my Halifax account for £140,000. The building society mistook the amount for £170,000 (although the amount was clearly written out in words as well as figures), and presented it to Halifax as such. Halifax, also failing to read the amount, cashed it -- because of the house sale, I had enough money in the account. Since then, the building society has been helpful, cooperative and apologetic. The Halifax merely sends me form letters saying the matter will be looked into within four weeks, and brightly printed brochures about resolving customer complaints. They do not respond to e-mails. When I phone them, they simply repeat the four-week mantra. They will not even tell me whether a copy of the cheque has been requested; after keeping me on hold for long periods, on an 0845 number, they just tell me the matter will be looked into -- not even that it IS being looked into. When I give the reference number they assigned me for the complaint, they tell me they have no information there, and seem annoyed that I might expect they would. No apology or expression of concern is forthcoming. They have got to be the worst bank in the world, and as soon as this is over, I shall close my account. I would advise others not even to consider opening an account with them.

It was more of a rant than a review. I can appreciate how frustrated you are, and having banked with them in the past I know first hand they dont deal with their own errors well! You need to discuss it more in general.

Sorry for the rating, but your review is too one-sided and tells me nothing about the Halifax in general, which is what this category is about. Your review reads more like a child having a tantrum than a balanced review.

Advantages: having impaired credit I was surprised and elated when they gave me a mortgage through their subsidiary Birmingham Midshires Disadvantages: seemed to take forever to complete, but is now complete
