The first Halo game for the XBOX was a massive success and a flagship title for the console. Since then no other shooter has surpassed it (on the Xbox that is). With Halo 2 you have a really good single player (although not as good as Half Life 2 of course) and Xbox live multiplayer functions too. It has been a long time waiting, but luckily it’s been worth it.
--- GRAPHICS/SOUND ---
The new Halo game has a completely new graphics engine and believe me the graphics are stunning just look at the images below if you don't believe me. Hi-res special effects are plentiful creating a superb atmosphere. Sound; some good background tracks to take notice of and the usual bangs and explosions for sound effects. A few eerie sounds add to the atmosphere, but nothing to write home about. Overall a significant improvement over the original, but nothing mind-blowing.
--- LASTABILITY/GAMEPLAY ---
The single player mode I haven't finished yet. I and a friend are taking it in turns to complete the game. It seems pretty long (I remember reading somewhere that the game lasts 10-15 hours), but whether because that’s I'm not very good I'm not sure, so it depends on your ability too. Very similar to other FPS (First person shooter if you haven't heard the term before) games and not too different from the original (which to be honest was a high standard already), Halo 2 builds less on updating the controls, but concentrates more on the storyline which is definitely an improvement over Halo 1 (as I mentioned early it’s still no Half-Life 2 beater). Not to spoil the plot, the basic premise is Earth is under attack from aliens and you've got to defend, not too complex then.
--- MULTIPLAYER ---
This is where it really shines. Halo 2 can now take advantage of the fully operational and massively used XBOX live network. Although you can have multiplayer offline it is nowhere as good as playing somebody on the other side of the planet (Planet Earth that is). Having 16 players online all at once adds incredibly to the excitement.
--- CONCLUSION ---
Halo 2 has been just released so will be full price, that is around £30 in most places. When you’re paying for a quality game though it doesn't matter so much as your getting good value for money. This is a must for XBOX owners, more weapons, more vehicles, better plot, graphics, sound and an addictive multiplayer mode. Halo 2 has improved in every area on the original. Still though Halo 1 will have a special place and the memories will live on.
N.B. So people may become addicted to it!
