HALO 3: ODST (XBOX360)
============= Halo 3: ODST is the next instalment in the Halo franchise it is the first person shooter to be released this fall but is facing some stiff competition, so is it worth our £30? With the Master Chief missing can this game live up to the high standards set by its predecessors?
The ODST story unfolds during the time of Halo 2 so even though the Master Chief may have already finished the fight in Halo 3 your back on the streets of New Mombasa, which has been invaded by the Covenant.
As the Rookie in an Orbital Drop Shock Trooper team you are immediately plunged into combat, but knocked out and separated from your team, you awake alone and confused to their fates.
So it is up to you to unravel and piece together the mystery of the invasion and find your team. With the help of the Superintendent the cities AI, guiding the way you set out on a quest to explore the brute infested streets of New Mombasa.
As the story unfolds and clues scattered around the city are discovered you will be plunged into flashbacks enabling you to play not just as the Rookie but as the five other members of your ODST unit as they try to survive against the onslaught of the Covenant army. The team of six are well developed due to excellent writing and voice overs, in-game and cut scenes.
For those Halo franchise fanatics there is plenty to collect and witness in this game that expands the Halo back story and universe.
Its singleplayer will come as a surprise to Halo fans, with the Master Chief MIA it instantly takes on a different pace. Solo or co-op with a friend you are allowed to roam the streets of Mombasa, scattered throughout are the remains of your team which when encountered trigger flashback missions. It is these missions where the old Halo returns with its action packed battles and warthog scenarios although not original they feel exciting again due to the different open environment.
So when your not alone as the Rookie your surround by fellow soldiers battling side by side against waves of covenant, this splits the feel of the game up perfectly over the 6-8 hours it takes to complete.
On the multiplayer front ODST comes with a single brand new mode, the high action co-op focused 'FireFight'.
You and up to three others players will face ever harder waves of enemies for points, achievements and bragging rights. And with the increasing difficulty multipliers deeper thought into each map and strategy is a necessity for survival. This highly tactical co-op mode will keep you interested for at least another 4-6 hours. Its focus on teamwork and strategy will certainly get you addicted. The only let down here is the complete absence of any matchmaking facility.
ODST comes with a second disc which contains the complete Halo 3 multiplayer experience. Including all the modes, dlc maps, forge and theatre it gives excellent value for money.
Overall ODST isn't to different from the previous Halo games, but by sticking to the high octane Halo action that has worked in the past, it offers a highly enjoyable experience to all. So for £30 you get the ODST single player, firefight and the complete Halo 3 multiplayer experience.
Great value for money.
Summary: Great value for money.
