Halo 3 is, as you might guess, the third in the Halo series and concludes the amazing story. This game is a first person shooter game developed by Bungie and is an exclusive for the xbox 360. It was released in the UK on the 26 of September 2007 and was one of the biggest games ever to be released with thousands of shops opening at midnight. The game sold over 8 million copies in about 3 months and was the biggest ever online game with over 1 million playing online on xbox live in the first 24 hours! Being such a big game and with all the hype about it there was no way I was going to miss out on this game and I pre-ordered my copy in order to make sure I got it. And it has certainly been worth it and has proved to be one of my favourite games and has led to hours of great gaming time!
The game:
In the game you play as Master Chief - the last of the Spartan 2 warriors, an elite group of genetically superior highly trained super soldiers. The game is set in the fictional universe of Halo in the year 2553. You are on the side of the humans and the Elites, whose leader is called Arbiter and you are fighting a massive war as well as trying to save Cortana, some highly advanced AI woman. In the game you play through a campaign and play through nine different levels. You can do this by yourself with other characters, such as the Arbiter being played by the computer, or you can play with up to 4 friends at one time and this can be done on one console or over xbox live. There are also a variety of settings you can change such as the difficulty which can be easy all the way up to Legendary - which is easiest done with friends.
The levels vary greatly as you go through with many different aims
to complete and many different enemies to face. They also vary in length and become longer as you go through. In the game there is also a variety of different vehicles and weapons. You have you typical assault rifle, but can find or are given a load of different guns later on from sniper rifles to shotguns. There also several different vehicles such as the warthog - a jeep style vehicle with a machine gun on the back, or these is a mongoose which is a bit like a quad bike and is rather nippy. You can also use a Hornet which can fly and hovers and has some really nice guns, and then of course you have the tank. In the game there are also several skulls to find, some gold and others silver. Once you have found these, as well as getting achievements, you also unlock special functions which can be used in the campaign:
Gold skulls:
1. Iron Skull (If you die, the mission restarts. If you're playing co-op, the whole team restarts from the last saved checkpoint) 2. Black Eye Skull (When you lose your energy shield, you can gain it back by melee attacking an enemy or ally) 3. Tough Luck Skull (Enemies amazingly dodge grenades and will make every "saving throw.") 4. Catch Skull (Enemies throw a lot more grenades at you) 5. Fog Skull (Your motion sensor is deactivated) 6. Famine Skull (The enemy's weapons you pick up will contain less ammunition than normal) 7. Thunderstorm Skull (Each enemy gets a "rank promotion," making them stronger) 8. Tilt Skull (Enemy armor becomes far more resilient to attack) 9. Mythic Skull (Enemies have double their normal health and shields)
Silver Skulls:
1. Blind Skull (Your entire HUD disappears along with your shooting arm) 2. Grunt Birthday Party Skull (When you shoot a grunt in the head, its head explodes into colorful confetti and you'll hear cheering from children) 3. Cowbell Skull (The explosions in the game become much bigger than usual) 4. I Would Have Been Your Daddy Skull (Adds special hidden dialogue to Halo 3's campaign)
These skulls add another dimension to the campaign and make it both more enjoyable and harder and more of a challenge for the more hardcore gamers.
Multiplayer:The multiplayer available on Halo3 has to be one of the best i have ever seen on any game and extends the life and playability of the game for ages! As well as having the online and multiplayer ability on the campaign and being able to randomly select and play a mission, there is so much to do online and many online games to play. With friends you can invite them in and play custom games where you can choose a variety of different game modes on one of the many maps provided. Or you can go on forge - a new ability where you can manipulate and change anything on a level - add new weapons move items and remove vehicles - this can mean that every game you play is different. Here is a list of the maps available:
1 Avalanche
2 Blackout
3 Cold Storage
4 Construct
5 Epitaph
6 Foundry
7 Ghost Town
8 Guardian
9 High Ground
10 Isolation
11 Last Resort
12 Narrows
13 Rat's Nest
14 Sandtrap
15 Snowbound
16 Standoff
17 The Pit
18 Valhalla
They all vary in size and conditions with some being small indoor levels and others large outdoor landscapes with so much space and loads of vehicles can be easily used. Each map is very well designed and each requires a different type of play strategy. When you play online there is also a variety of different modes to play from typical team death match to other well known favourites such as capture the flag. There are other such as territories, infection, assault (where there is a bomb), king of the hill, juggernaut and VIP. All other these game types have several different variants which add a different edge to the game. An example would be with juggernaut where you are the juggernaut and have to kill other players to get points and everyone else tries to kill you to become the juggernaut. Another variant is ninjanaut where the person who is on is invisible - which makes it very funny when you are suddenly attacked out of nowhere! The game also has a special ranking system where you gain experience points for winning matches and these are accumulated and you go up ranks and prove yourself to be a great Halo warrior. However you can only achieve certain ranks if you play in ranked games and improve you skill level (from 1 to 50) once you have gained enough exp points and a high enough skill level then you will rank up to the next level. This makes the game much more competitive and gives you something to aim for. Another feature is the ability to change your character and play as either an Elite or Spartan - and then adjust colours, armour and helmets (some of which can be unlocked through the game). You can also adjust your player code and your badge and make a clan by all having the same badge. The online game play is infinite with so much to do and so much fun to be had! So what are you waiting for start playing now!
On the game you can even, after playing a game, go onto the menu and watch you recent matches and assess how well you played as well as cutting and taking some really funny videos or take some great pictures. These can then be put on your own 'Halo space' for the rest of the halo community to see. There are even some of the best videos and pictures each week to be seen under bungie favourites as well as some custom designed maps and levels and game modes which can be all downloaded for free!
If you want to know in more detail about your rankings and how you have done on online matches you can visit and sing up to Bungie.net where you can find out all your statistics in the game and how you have done - including any medals you have won. For example you can collect medals for getting killing sprees, double or triple kills, head shots, etc. Why don't you check it out now and compare your stats with your friends or the best in the Halo world!
There are also several map packs to download from the marketplace on the dashboard, the first being the Heroic map pack which is now free and the Legendary map pack which costs 600 Microsoft points. All the map packs are certainly worth getting and make a great game that bit better and add even more variety and enjoyment!
Graphics and sound:
Halo 3 employs some of the best graphics in all computer games and there is a long range and you can see up to 10 miles (16 km) into the distance - all being 3 dimensional. Everything looks very realistic and has shadows and reacts to tis environment. It has some of the best graphics I have ever seen. It also has some great music and good dialogue with loads of cut scenes and a great final ending film. There is also a variety of sounds with close talking and distant gunfire. A lot of the music was also composed and recorded by large orchestras.
There is also a limited edition version which includes a special hard case and an art book for £22.99, or for the whole package, there is the legendary pack which also includes a special master chief helmet case and an extra DVD.
As well as the game there are many other Halo products including the special edition halo console, controller and headset and also strategy guides and t-shirts.
Conclusion:
This has to be one of the greatest games of all time and includes the best graphics, sounds and game play I have ever seen. This game is certainly worth buying particularly as it is relatively cheap now and offers so much including an awesome finale to the series and the best online gaming experience you could ever have! It's just a shame this game was only released for the xbox 360 - feel a bit sorry for all those people who own a PS3.
Thanks for reading!

Advantages: So many features! Best Multiplayer ever. Great single player Disadvantages: Xbox Live really recommended. Graphics not as good as Gears of War.
