It’s hard to know where to begin with a game like this. Many regard Halo as the best thing to happen to FPS (First Person Shooters) since Half-Life and some even say that it is the best FPS in history. When Bungie began to show the world the first glimpses of Halo people were interested, the story line was nothing new (battle mean space monsters in other world) but it looked different, the gameplay seemed interesting and it seemed Bungie were trying to advance the genre. It was predictably slated to appear on the PC but then along came Microsoft with their big black box and even bigger suitcases of money. Halo was to be an XBox exclusive (though it is appearing on the PC later this year) not only that but Halo would be the main launch-game for XBox. It succeeded. Over one million copies are now reportedly sold and it doesn’t really take a genius to work out that without Halo the XBox could have had a slightly bumpier first year. Halo has been met with rave reviews, even gaining a much coveted 10/10 from Edge magazine, so it seems Halo does indeed deliver what the hype built up.

The year is 2552. For once in these type of games Earth still does exist and its not a burning pile or rock in the solar system. However, it has become overpopulated and so the human race has had to find other hospitable planets to live on. Thirty two years ago the outer colony Harvest lost contact with Reach, the main research and military colony, a combat team was sent out but only one ship came back. An alien race known as the Covenant had took over the colony and they are hell bent on the destruction of human kind. The Reach facility therefore worked on a special project of super solider that would do battle with the Covenant. This is where you come in. Taking control of Master Chief you must do battle with the Covenant and destroy their forces. The story, it has to be said, is a fairly standard sci-fi affair and ultimately games are not about stories but in recent years more importance has been latched onto it. During the game you will gain greater knowledge of the alien race and back-story which will add to the game instead of it being just another on the rails FPS.

There are so many FPS that for one to stand out it needs to try hard. It is not enough to plop down your character in a certain setting and have him or her blast their way to the end. A game needs variety and it needs to be exciting. Luckily Halo has both qualities. While a lot of missions are the basic progression of the combat of enemies to get to a certain place its how you get there that matters. You can either go in guns blazing or try for a more tactical approach and ambush enemies with grenades. You can travel on foot or take charge of enemy ships. Some missions do very in some cases, for example you are sent to save your Captain from being held at one point in the game. This isn’t Quake either. You will, for some parts of the game, be accompanied by other soldiers, this is not particularly new in any real sense, but adds a lot of realism to the game as opposed to just being you and about one thousand aliens. Realism also plays a part in combat. You are only allowed to carry two weapons at a time so you have to weigh up the pros and cons of each weapon and try to pick one that will be of use to you the most throughout certain areas. While gun loving gamers will find the limited arsenal a let down its inclusion is important to fit the balance of the game. Halo, while not connected to the Live service, does have multiplayer options. You can play through Co-Op mode via a two-player option. You can also link up Xboxes with the link cable for even more interactivity without the hindrance of a split screen.

Another crucial aspect of FPS and indeed most games, is the A.I. Gone are the days when developers could just make the enemies charge towards you guns blazing. They need to have distinct and realistic behaviour patterns to please gamers these days. The A.I. in Halo is a great aspect of the game. On the ‘Easy’ setting you will only get a rare glimpse of what the A.I. can be capable of but playing it on the harder difficulty settings will show you how well the A.I. is implemented. Enemy creatures will know how to attack in groups, weak ones will either run away when they get badly damaged or will seek cover with stronger enemies. They will change weapons, switching from grenades back to guns, in case they want to flush you out or finish you off. If an enemy is shot down for a gun turret then others will run to it to try and retrieve control before you do. It all makes for a challenging to rewarding game experience. Your soldier comrades are also blessed in the common sense department too. They will be able to do the normal shootings as well as drive vehicles and operate gun turrets with great accuracy. They, thankfully, rarely get in your way in combat either and will concentrate on enemies all around them, not just the one you are concentrating on. It would have been helpful, however, if you could order them to stay behind or attack. It would also have been beneficial to allow them to pick up first aid packs when they are low on health. However the A.I. rarely disappoints and it seems Bungie took it seriously enough to make it work well.

Graphically the world of Halo looks very pleasing to the eye. Obviously keen to show off the XBox potential this game proves how powerful the machine is. The outdoor environments are fantastic. They are, on the whole, very grand affairs and detail is not just a few sparse trees, but rock formations, hills and streams will run through an area at the same time. Lighting effects are best used here as well, especially when, later on in the game, you invade an outdoor space in the dark. Coupled with the fact that these environments are prone to host numerous battles between alien and human and you get an epic scale of play. Indoor areas are certainly not as aesthetically pleasing but do lend to the atmosphere well and some structures inside the buildings are pleasant. Music and game effects are also done to a high standard. The music is a major draw for the game and there are some excellent pieces. Sound effects are also used well, this game will be enhanced greatly with surround sound, you’ll be able to hear enemies approaching and the tell tale sound of a thrown grenade. However I did encounter one problem and that was with the speech of your assistant Cortana. She is at hand to tell you your objectives and key information yet she is simply drowned out by other sounds at frequent points in the game and with no subtitle option for he its rather annoying.

At first I did have problems with the controls. This was my first time playing a FPS shooter on a console and, with the XBox controller having a few ‘issues’, the beginning was a lot of getting used to the controller and how it handles in frantic combat. Movement is controlled by the left Control Stick and pressing it down will able you to crouch. To fire a weapon the Right Trigger is used and to use a grenade the Left Trigger is used. Changing a weapon is done with the Y button, changing a grenade the black button and reloading is done with X. Jumping is performed by the A button and a melee attack (normal a punch of a swift blow to the head with a weapon) is done with the B button. To light up dark areas the flashlight is needed which can be used via the White button. You can control the camera by using the right control stick, which can change your direction and, pushing it down, can also trigger the sniper function. As said there can be a few teething problems at first with getting your view in line with the enemy but you soon get used to it. Some problems I did encounter was with the button layout. When using the flashlight I found I had to completely remove my thumb from the right Control Stick to turn it on because the White button is so far up, only a slight niggle, but you don’t need that to happen when you are suddenly ambushed. Also having the Y and X buttons placed so close to the A and Bs can lead you to jumping when you really want to reload which really doesn’t help. The controlling of vehicles, especially the Warthog, is a cumbersome affair at first but, like the other controls, it’ll get better over time.

Like all games, Halo is not perfect and it does have its flaws. Indoor environments are slightly lacking. They are detailed nicely enough but they can get very repetitive. Some people think this adds realism with some rooms being the same as others and some think that its just boring. Playing the game it didn’t bother me too much, I was too busy attacking enemies to notice, but at times it did become too repetitive and confusing at times. It can sometimes be disorientating to go through a section that looks exactly like the one you have just been in as it raises the question if you are heading the right way or not. The ‘Flood’ levels have also come under heavy criticism. These levels consist of you travelling around the same rooms, in structure and detail, and blasting enemies that have slightly different behaviour patterns to the others (i.e. basic attack mode and no strategy) I did find this part of the game a slight letdown and it really could have used some variation. Another flaw of the game is in the same vein. There is very little variation of enemies. Again, this wont bother all people, but seeing the same kind of enemy all the time can get as repetitive as the environments but luckily their behaviour makes up for the disappointment.

Halo is truly a well-crafted and implemented game. One I had gotten to grips with the controls I enjoyed myself a great deal while playing it and it served as a satisfying challenge. Personally, I don’t think it is as quite as revolutionary as Half-Life in terms of the FPS genre, however it is revolutionary (as the name suggests)and brings new life to the FPS genre when the releases recently were sub standard and bland. It warrants five stars but I’ve shied away from giving it a full ten marks because of the problems I’ve mentioned, particularly with repeat environments, which will be rectified in Halo 2. As for it being good enough to buy an XBox for alone then, well, it gives a good argument for it.

Excellent review. Have played the first and second Halo and thought the first was much better. Really thought the plot was pretty boring and just ran around with no particular strategy laughing my head off. In some ways prefer death match mode but always end up playing with Halo obsessives so I dont stand a chance so I usually end up stood with a rocket launcher throughout the whole match!!
