There are some people who regard Halo has the best thing to happen to FPS. Since the release of Halo the FPS genre has been revolutionised, with Halo becoming one of the most successful FPS in existance. Bungie and Microsoft have produced a real gem with Halo, an truly replayable game time after time.

Halo puts you in control of Spartan 117 - a genetically and biologically enhanced super soldier fighting for the survival of humanity on the ring-world of Halo. the story begins with you fleeing the world of Reach which had previously been destroyed by the powerful and merciless Covenant armadas intent on wiping out humanity from the galaxy. The game begins with you awakening from cyro-sleep to repel Covenant borders from your ship - The Pillar of Autumn.

Halo's success was massive, with nearly six million copies of the game being sold in the space of two years. With original weapons and a unique storyline it is hardly surprising that this game rose to such a position in the markets and the gaming world. Many FPS players rever Halo, a truly awesome game in it''s own right.

I have played a lot of Halo. There have been many nights spent at friends with a copy of the game and an Xbox, whiling away the hours defending humanity from the Covenant onslaught. I think in total I must have played through the campaign with friends nearly a total of two hundred times and have enjoyed many hours of split-screen multiplayer. It is a unique game to say the least and a satisfying Xbox experience.

One of the reasons that Halo has become so popular is due both to the level of design and thought attriubted to the levels, veichles and weapons system. The Covenant weaponry feels suitably alien and the Covenant veichles are a pleasure to drive and experience. It really does feel as if the player is the last hope for humanity, fighting off score after score of alien aggressors in a simple attempt to durvive each continued onslaught. The atmposphere of the game is intense and it is this that has largely contributed to the success of the game.

The weapons system was a stroke of genius from Bungie. There are few FPS games wherein such satisfaction is deamed from using the weapons provided from the game. Firing off a few pistol shots with as much accuracy as possible to then hose down your foes in a spray of assult rifle fire is simply enjoyable. Ensnaring your foes with needler fire and watching them explode in pink glory is exceptionally satisfying. Blasting away with the rocket launcher and marvelling at the destruction left in your wake is something that can not be boasted by most FPS games. The sniper rifle allows for a great degree of accuracy and some truly awesome shots once you've played the game enough to begin to master it. The plasma pistol and plasma rifle feel so very alien and can be gathered from the corpses of grunts and elites respectively. In short the weapons are immensely satisfying to use and in the hands of a skilled player can be devastating. Exceptional graphics and smooth controls enhance this experience, allowing for an excellent gameplay experience.

The veichles too do not let the side down any more than the weapons. I think it is here that Bungie really showed their talent for producing top-notch games. The ghost and the Banshee are the two alien veichles that the player can drive and feel very smooth to utilise. A skillful player will learn all sorts of tricks and will learn to love using these. The Banshee is a very smooth driving experience and dogfights on multiplayer games are awesome. A skillful player in a banshee is an opponent to be feared.

The human veichles too are truly awesome. The scorpion tank gives a feeling of invulnerability, laying waste to anything that it comes into contact with. The tank supports two modes of fire; the chaingun and the main turret blast. The purpose of the chaingun is to lay down a field of surpression fire, pinning down your foes. The secondary fire will literally blow your opponents away, leaving you able to continue on unhindered. The warthog is perhaps the most well know veichle and possibly the most loved. Supporting a chaingun the human jeep is capable of taking on a variety of foes and with a little skill a player can onleash a trail opf destruction in his/her wake.

This alone would have made Halo a great game and a lot of thought too has been given to the enemies you will come across. The Covenant aliens you will fight are satisfying foes, from the lowly grunts to the proud and noble elites. A player will soon learn that many different tactics have to be employed to take them down, especially when playing on Legendary, so there is room for even the least experienced FPS player to improve their skills. You will encounter a parasitic race called The Flood also that whilst less "loveable" than the Covenant will provide you will an enjoyable challenge also.

Halo is a great game and one of my personal Xbox favourites. With a simple yet effective control system the game is easy tpo adapt to, even for those who do not like FPS games (which until Halo I was really not keen on). I would recommend this game, especially if you enjoy FPS games as this is one of the best you are likely to find on the market. Don't own an Xbox? Don't worry, a PC version is also avalible.

Suit up, Spartan 117. You are the last hope. The fate of humanity is in your hands.
