"Factotum" - Charles Bukowski

Advantages: Extremely funny, easy to read, bursting with character.
Disadvantages: Occasionally vulgar and misogynistic.

In his lifetime, Bukowski wrote many semi-biographical novels of which this is his second, and it shows. After the somewhat stop-start nature of his first novel "Post Office"; "Factotum" sparkles with downbeat wit, and an over riding sense of nihilism. Starting almost every chapter with a new dead end job, Bukowski's sardonic recounting of what it it's like to be down and out grabs you and won't let you go to you're fully immersed in his world. Anybody who's been stuck working for a scum bag of a boss, who's been without direction in life will relate to this book. In some ways it's a "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" without the drugs, jumping from one crazy incident to the next, knocking you down and never quite letting you get back up. Bukowski's highly distinctive writing style is evident throughout, and he truly pours ...

Review of Factotum - Charles Bukowsky

Drunk Ol' Bukowski, drunk

Advantages: fascinating insights into the low life
Disadvantages: none

Although largely unrecognised in America, Europe knew that Charles Bukowski was one of the greatest writers of ‘realism’ who ever lived. My favourite writers are Yukio Mishima, Oscar Wilde, Clarence Cooper Jr and many a female poet, but Bukowski will always be my absolute favourite, all time, number one, daddy of the literacy scene. He was an alcoholic ad he died at the age of 74 in 1994 (The Boo Radleys once wrote a song called ‘Charles Bukowski Is Dead), but whether drunk or hungover, he wrote with amazing clarity and simplicity, in a style that was poetic, explicit and easy to read. Whenever I’m in the mood for trying to convert the world into poetry, I’ll recommend one of his books: ‘Mockingbird Wish Me Luck’. A lot of people think that poetry is all about misty rolling hills, unrequited ...

Review of The Most Beautiful Woman in Town and Other Short Stories - Charles Bukowsky

Bukowski: Born Into This Film Review

Advantages: It's Bukowski!
Disadvantages: It's got Bono in it!

Charles Bukowski has the reputation of being a drunk, a womanizer and a frequent gambler. His work combines fiction with real life, and director John Dullaghan attempts to challenge the common perceptions of the writer by exploring the background of the character. This documentary draws information from poetry readings; as well as interviews with friends, his old publishing companies and Bukowski himself. As with most documentaries, the information collected is not always 100% reliable, but will provoke a variety of debate anyway. Are his ex-girlfriends speaking the truth in their interviews, or are they just selling a story for five minutes of fame? Of the various celebrities paying their respects, which of them really knew Bukowski's when he was alive? Of course, you never really get a definite answer to each of these questions ...
