I figured that an ideal way for me to access e-mails and the internet on the move was to buy a PDA enabled mobile phone.
I went into The Link, I was greeted with a variety of options, but the sales assistant swore by the Treo 600. He spent great time explaining the complexities of the phone. How the phone can suit everyone's way of life. And the cracking sales line "It's not small, but it's not big" was used, the assistant seemed proud of this revolutionary statement. I never quite had the heart to scream "MUPPET!" in his face. But I did go on his recommendation and purchase the phone. It cost me £99 sim free, which at the time seemed like a steal.
Steal =transitive and intransitive verb take something unlawfully: to take something that belongs to somebody else, illegally or without the owner's permission
There was something very illegal about this transaction, but at the time I had no idea what.
Chapter 1 The Phone Itself
The phone itself is kind of funky; it has an ordinary telephone keypad with a large variety of letter keys and symbol keys chucked in around it. This created a proper qwerty keyboard. Unlike some PDA style phones that you need to get the machine to understand your handwriting, this little baby lets you type the words in allowing quick use of e-mail, text messaging and letter writing. The phone colour is sort of a graphite colour; it often looks black and often looks silver.
What I wanted the phone for was the e-mail and internet side, yes you actually get the "proper" internet and not the nasty wap service offered on most phones. Delivery of these pages is slow, but then bare in mind your receiving and transmitting data from a 36k modem. Rather like most web pages on ordinary PC's you need to scroll down through the web pages to get to the bits you want. This can be arduous as some pages come up in a very elongated fashion. It took me 2 minutes to get to the bottom of the first page of the website I needed. You can mess about with the setting to speed things up and reduce the length of the pages, but I don't like to mess with things I don't know about.
Other facilities of the phone are a digital camera; this phone offers by far the worst digital camera I have ever seen. If you're familiar with ebay, sometimes you'll see a item for sale with a picture that is impossible to make out. This is the sort of style picture the treo gives you. Pictures seem blurred and actually a little misty snd seedy, almost like seeing an image from a low budget soft porn movie. I took a photograph of someone and the image was not really recognisable, the only way you would identify the person was if someone had told you who it was.
The phone has a media player built in, again very poor quality. The sound is only mono, and the images are difficult to see. The media is stored onto interchangeable smart cards. The card that came with the phone has enough for about 6 tracks on it. So a bigger smart card is essential.
You can obviously send traditional text messages, and more elaborate picture messages and video messages. Although the phone does not seem to have enough memory to allow the later of the three options to work.
The phone has an intel PXA270 processor built in apparently this provides an outstanding multimedia experience. Hmmmmm
Chapter 2 The Problems
The phone was new, it was not a second hand phone bought on the cheap. But within minutes of getting the phone to power up (an ordeal in itself) I found faults.
The battery on the phone is sealed into the phone, you have to charge the unit as a whole. I put the phone on charge and left it to do its thing. 29 hours later I looked at the phone and it was still charging, I powered up only to find the total charge was only 27%. Every few hours I checked again, and it went up by 1 or 2 % on each occasion. 4 days from purchase and the phones charge was only 73%, and the life was very poor. One three minute phone call meant that the phone had its battery life reduced by 7%. I realised that there was an obvious battery problem but was not going back to a link for several days, so I decided to bare with it.
The second big problem was that every time you plugged the phone in it erased the phones memory, meaning you need to go through a training process several times a day.
The third and final problem was the phone facility; the sound quality for someone receiving a call from it was appalling. I contacted several people all said I sounded like I was talking through a computer.
I could not even praise the units ease of use, it was difficult if not impossble to perform simple operations like a phone call or a text message. Saddle this with the fact that the unit intermitantly clicks on and off of transmit mode (where you can use the phone), to a non transmission mode ideally suited for airplane use.
After several days I returned to the Link to exchange the phone, the exchange was quick and painless. And no real questions were asked at the time. Unbeknown to me this was because the problems were fairly standard

Chapter 3 LAW MAN
After the second handset had similar problems I decided to contact the Palm People, they were horrified that I had been able to buy the phone without a contract. That had no interest at all in the faults, the conversation was quite horrific. In fact they even threatened me with legal action against me if I failed to return the phone to The Link within 24 hours.
When I returned to the Link they told me that the Palm people were "off their rockers". And fobbed me off with a series of reason as to why they can legally sell the phones. And then after this they told me they would not accept the phone back. When I had returned the phone on a previous occasion the sales assistant had not amended the phone details on the receipt.
While sat in a nearby pub reflecting on the situation with a meal, I glanced at the phone, the IMEI number (IMEI is a unique identity given to a phone) did not match the box IMEI. With this knowledge I returned to the link, and it transpired that not only did it not match but when traced back through its life the phones were actually refurbished units, sent to the Link by Palm itself. The Link finally agreed to refund me on the discovery that the handset I had in my hand had belonged to not one, but two other people.
I cannot recommend enough that buyers avoid this phone, despite the ideal being a useful one the lack of support from palm and the lack of quality rings out. There are indeed far better phones on the market with the same facilities.
Advantages: convenient, expandable, wonderful device Disadvantages: high charges for data transfer, some niggles with the software occasionally
...a good deal on a Handspring Treo 600 and I had to have it. I haven't been disappointed, it's brilliant. The deal I got meant I get the phone for free although I have to go onto a high tarrif (£45p/m) for four months to achieve this.
I'd hesitate to claim that smartphones are necessarily the way of the future - not everybody wants a computer in their pocket. I've often heard people reeling off the features of their new mobile to be met with blank ... ...make and receive calls, yeah?"
If that's all you want out of a phone, that's fine but some of us would like a lot more. The Treo delivers. Around a year ago I upgraded my basic phone to an SPV, extending my Orange contract and while it was a natty little device it wasn't without its flaws. The camera, for example, is becoming a very common feature of mobiles and with the SPV it wasn't built in but snapped on, removing the convenience. You could ...

...intensive research he discovered that Handspring have joined with palm and have brought a device out which is a combined mobile phone and PDA. With this new device called Palmone Treo 600 you have the best of both worlds because it is a phone along with a PDA (personal digital assistance or hand held computer for short). We purchase the phone from Micro Warehouse for £387.74 including Vat. The phone has an address book as all phones do, but it has ... ...means when you enter details into the PDA contacts, that’s all you have to do because it links up with the phone and information you enter is in both sides. It has a Querty keyboard like a computer and if you’re not so good at typing like my husband its great news. He has told me! When it comes to syncronisation once you have read the instructions and installed the software it is nice and easy.
The only part my husband is disappointed with is that ...

Advantages: All in one with a great touch screen Disadvantages: Bulky and heavy, no MS office products
I've been waiting for this product for years. O2's XDA came close, as did the Nokia Communicator but this really is everything you'll ever need in one easily portable format.
The keyboard is tiny but you soon get used to it. For ease of use, the phone can be operated from a touch pad on the main screen. This is great for people like me who hate fiddly buttons.
The screen is fantastic as it is large, wide and clear. It can be used as a touch screen ... ...easy to use. The organiser functions sync with Outlook and can be easily navigated using the included stylus. You can email(POP 3) using the QWERTY keyboard. SMS and a built in camera are also standard. The camera really only works well outdoors but you'd expect that from any camera without a flash. The resolution is really only suitable for MMS and not really for recording your holiday on.
There are many other features such as an excellent calculator ...

Advantages: Lots of functions Disadvantages: Larger than normal phone
I've had my Treo 600 for about 5 months now, obtained direct from Orange to upgrade my Siemens SL55. So, i've gone from one of the smallest handsets on the market to what is probably one of the largest. Why you may be asking, well...
I was due an upgrade and had been thinking of buying a PDA for a while so the Treo appeared to kill two birds with one stone. I contacted Orange and paid £99 upgrade fee and my Treo arrived a few days later.
First ... ...never get the hang of this'. I did keep hold of my SL55 for a week or two just in case but soon got to grips with the Treo. Now the size doesn't bother me at all.
I find the full qwerty keyboard to be easy to use and the 5-way scroll button is ideal for access to the many functions of the thing.
Being basically a Palm PDA the are loads of applications available for the Treo including games, MP3 players, picture viewers and many many more. On registering ...

Advantages: Small for a PDA, good features Disadvantages: Radio quality, big for a phone
I have had a Treo 600 for 4 months, since their early release on the Orange network. Overall I have found it to be reasonably robust and reliable. I am now on my second handset, as the first treo was continually turning of the GSM radio and eventually decided to turn itself off and not come back to life. The second treo has had no such problems so I suspect this was just unlucky.
Overall the range of applications and features is similar to most ... ...access all available. The only feature that is obviously missing is bluetooth, which would have been useful for use with generic bluetooth car kits.
Battery life is very good, I talk frequently and often go for 4 days without recharging the battery. The case that is supplied with the treo is little use, as it restricts the use of the device without completely removing the case.
Overall this is a very good buy if you are looking for a smartphone ...
