I love my gadgets and seldom travel without at least one piece of electronic wizardry about my person. I've fancied a PDA - Personal Digital Assistant - for some time, but they've always been just too expensive for what would really (or so I thought) be more of a toy than an essential bit of kit.
Recently, though, I hit on the idea of buying a second-hand model. And I remembered that several years ago I had hankered after the Handspring Visor Deluxe. Not because it undercut and outperformed Palm's equivalent model, nor because plugin expansion packs made it infinitely adaptable, though both of these are true, but because it came in a range of translucent, iMac-style colours as well as the then-mandatory dull grey-black of other Palm systems. Ice (clear), blue and green were available, but the one I set my heart on was the orange version.
I couldn't afford it at the time, but technology has moved on apace. When I investigated on eBay, I discovered that what was once the cutting edge of the palmtop world can now be picked up for £20 - £40.
I got mine for £26 plus three quid P&P, having waited several weeks for an orange model to appear among the listings, and I am utterly delighted with it. Despite its age it elicits coos of admiration thanks to its cute design: bright orange front, clear back, with the inner workings visible through the translucent casing. It's pretty petite, measuring 7.5 x 12 x 2cm, and weighs 215g in its case. The screen is 160 x 160 pixels, or about 6 by 6cm.
Of course, being an older model, there are many things the Visor Deluxe can't do. The display is black and white, graphics are very basic and sound limited to clicks and beeps. It has eight megabytes of memory, which is not much by modern standards, but as the software is correspondingly slimline you can cram in a surprising amount of data.
Never mind what it doesn't do, what does it do? The simple answer: everything I want it to. It has a calendar, with an alarm feature which I never use (I can't stand it when things unexpectedly bleep at me), a To-Do list, an address book and a notepad. Silver shortcut buttons on the front of the Visor allow you to go straight to these four utilities (there are also Page Up and Page Down buttons); otherwise they can be launched from the desktop. In short, it's great for those sudden inspirations and cryptic memos that would otherwise be lost to posterity or scrawled in Biro on the back of my hand. I'll be taking it on holiday instead of my old address book; it's smaller and lighter, and you can play games on it into the bargain.
You enter data and move around the screen using the stylus, that pointy thing about the size of a ballpoint refill which lives in its own little borehole in the back of the Visor and is, incidentally, colour-coordinated to match it. This works as both mouse and keyboard; tap the screen to open programs and make selections, enter text by opening the onscreen keyboard and hitting the letter you want, or by scrawling a series of arcane hieroglyphics on a special area of the screen - the Graffiti system.
I thought I would do most of my writing using the keyboard method, but in fact after a bit of practice (you're given a tutorial the first time you start up) I found Graffiti quick and easy to use. An upward stroke puts you in uppercase mode, and a tap lets you input punctuation symbols.
I do struggle with some of the letters - it's all too easy to produce a Q when you want a G - and it can be hard to remember characters you don't use very often, like X. If you get stuck, though, sweeping the stylus up the screen pops up a Graffiti crib, and you can always switch to the keyboard to find the character you're after. If you really don't get on with Graffiti or you're going to be entering a lot of text, you can invest in a folding keyboard which plugs in to the Visor.
The Visor's operating system is Palm OS, and the version mine came with is 3.1. Palm OS is a popular and widely-used choice for PDAs, meaning there's lots of support and software to be found online. It also comes with a CD containing the software you need to install on your PC in order to HotSynch: back up your data, install new software on the Visor and add records made on the computer to your PDA. The Palm software is compatible with Macintosh (system 8.1 and above) and Windows (95, 98, 2000 and ME). I couldn't find any information about running it under Windows XP or Mac OS X.
The operating system can't be upgraded because it's hardwired into the Read Only Memory, but there are software patches which let you run programs requiring a later version of Palm OS.
The Visor Deluxe was originally packaged with your choice of a serial (9-pin) or USB docking cradle to connect it to your PC. Mine came with the serial version, which was no earthly use to me and my iMac. Fortunately my father had a Visor when they first came out and managed to break it fairly swiftly, so there was a USB cradle going begging.
According to my dad, the screen of his Visor got crushed in his bag and cracked. I've been lugging mine about with me on a daily basis, often tossing it lightly into my bag from a distance of a couple of metres, and haven't worried about this occurrence at all; a snap-on plastic cover protects not only the screen but the connectors at the bottom of the device where it plugs in to the docking cradle. On top of that, there's a smart black leather slip-on case. This has acquired a few scuffs, but getting scuffed in the Visor's stead is, after all, what it's for.
The Visor is powered by two AAA batteries. I've been consulting it several times a day for two months, including having it on for up to an hour while I write lengthy notes, and the onscreen battery level indicator has dropped by about a half. I haven't had much need, however, for the groovy green backlight, which is a big power drain.
At the top of the Visor is a slot similar to the one on a Game Boy in size and shape, with a slide-off plastic cover. This is the port for expansion packs, one of the Handpsring's best features. With the right pack, you can Bluetooth-enable your PDA for surfing the Internet and sending e-mails, play MP3s or listen to the radio, and even convert the Visor into a mobile phone, digital camera or GPS unit. There's a huge range of software packs, too, from spreadsheets and databases to games and ebooks. expansys.com seems to be the main stockist of Handspring and third-party add-ons; I bought an MP3 player from them for an incredible £9.45, though I haven't used it yet. I could easily spend quadruple my initial investment on spicing up my Visor.
As well as expansion packs there's a huge amount of Palm software available to download from the Internet, most of which is free or very cheap. Silly games abound - like Herding Cats, in which you poke cats with your stylus to persuade them in the right direction - and once you equip yourself with the reading software there's a world of electronic books (the aforementioned ebooks) to download, from Shakespeare and the Bible to 'The Ducks of Doom'. Download software to your PC, save it in your Palm folder, and it will be installed on the Visor next time you HotSynch. Check out handango.com for starters; most of the software there is available as a free trial before you buy.
The Handspring also has an integral microphone for use with mobile phone and voice recorder add-ons, and an infrared beam which allows you to pass data between Palm devices without the need for a cable. You can send an electronic business card to a client, or pass on your favourite games to your friends; I have successfully swapped data with a chum's brand new Palm Tungsten.
The downside of the Visor is its limited availability. eBay or amazon.co.uk's zShops are probably your best bet, while expansys.com sells the occasional ex-display model at a good price. Official technical support is hard to come by, too; visit handspring.co.uk and you'll find it's 'now PalmOne' and models earlier than the hot new Treo might as well not exist, though if you click on Customer Support you can retrieve PDFs of the warranty and user guide. There are, however, plenty of online forums and communities where you can seek help from other users.
I was afraid the novelty of owning a PDA would wear off quickly, but two months on I'm wondering how I managed without it. If any further proof is needed that it's a useful piece of kit, I have written over half a Ciao review on the Tube between London Bridge and Archway. Now that's efficient.

...then I’d highly recommend the Handspring Visor Deluxe - it’s only £129 and does everything that a hand-held is normally expected to do. Other hand-helds have more advanced features, but usually these are around the £250 - £500 price range. This model has the same features as a £200 Palm, but for a much lower price.
What else can I say? This is a great hand-held, there are a couple of niggles, but this is the best compromise between price, features ...

...problem is that Palm and Handspring have merged so you can't get the customer support as easily for Handsprings as you can palm.
In 2000 it was proclaimed as the fastest PDA on the market. It is quite fast when going to applications and has only ever crashed once so far. That was when I downloaded a Jaguar racer onto it, and so I suppose it had reason to crash as it was such a large application!
The thing slips easily into my jean pocket, but another ... ...on the front instead of on the top, which means that it switches itself on while walking sometimes.
The graffiti writing area took maybe a couple of days to master, but it does make entering text easier. At the begining I had to use the onscreen keyboard for symbols it would not recognise, but I am starting to get more used to the graffiti interface.
When it arrived, the PDA only came with a few basic applications. This was soon fixed though thanks ...

Advantages: Small, flexible, relatively cheap (compared to a Psion!) Disadvantages: Requires USB
...better way to describe the Handspring Visor Deluxe. It comes with a few apps, such as a diary and a To Do list (a godsend for any as disorganised as me!). The main advantage is the versatility, though.
Not only are there a range of modules to buy, which clip into the back of the unit (in a way not unlike games for old-style Gameboys and Sega Game Gears, but that's another matter!) but there is a wealth of software availabel for download. A number ... ...and the range is growing constantly.
There are apps for keeping track of your alcohol consumption, for tracking your weight from day to day, and apparently for other less frivolous things. There are also a steadily rising number of games available. Despite this, I defy anytone to run out of memory on this thing.
The sole weakness of this unit, as far as I can see, is the fact that it only works well with a PC connection. Without the HotSync cradle, ...

Handspring Visor deluxe PDA
The world of personal digital assistants - literally, palm of the hand-sized computing devices - is growing apace. At the present time, it may be convenient to consider the options as two; those based on the Palm range and those which are not Palm. For the purposes of this review, we will assume that the reader has already chosen to go down the path marked "Palm operating systems". If undecided, there are excellent news ... ...range of specialist module which Handspring have chosen to call Springboards - presumably because they serve as a jumping off point to a whole range of third part options such as a communications modem, digital camera, MP3 player or carrier for very large programmes. As the Visor uses one of the versions of the Palm system, there is already a vast range of programmes. Many of these provide the opportunity to tailor one's own needs just as with desktop ...

5 Reasons I think the Palm T/X is a great find.
I began my PDA journey with the HandspringVisor , outgrew it and moved on to HandspringVisorDeluxe; bought most of the springboard modules, fax/modem, camera, memory, keyboard, etc and finally sold it and turned to the (all in one) Sony Clie NR70V (which I subsequently over worked and burned out). Thus began my 2 year search for a better PDA. I don't know why it took me so long to come back to the originator of the PDA, but I choose the Palm T/X, for five reasons.
#1. It's a Palm! One of the ONLY businesses that's still in the business of making and supporting PDA's. I have nothing against the Blackberry, Treo, I-Phone or others, but it's comforting to know that the product I bought is backed by the same business that started it. (what happened to Handspring, the Sony Clie' line ...

If you have a quick search you?ll find my other reviews of the Palm III and the HandspringVisorDeluxe.
We?ll basically I got sick of the problems with my Handspring and couldn?t resist the offer of a Palm IIIXE from Dixons. The package also included a FREE copy of the Palm Mobile Internet Kit (MIK), normally £25 and a TDK Global Pulse cable to link the PDA with my mobile phone.
WORD OF WARNING!
While the deal was fantastic value, I have to admit that I was disappointed by the TDK Global Pulse cable offer. With your purchase you will receive a form which you have to complete to receive a GlobalPulse cable. After returning my completed form I waited 4 weeks before being informed that the cable that links my PDA with a Nokia 7110 was not covered by the promotion. Given the price of the package it?s not a major issue, especially ...

Advantages: Springboard Expansion module Disadvantages: Size in comparison to the Palm Vx
There's not much point in harping on about the features of the HandspringVisorDeluxe, other than to say its what you'd expect from a high spec PDA. Of course, you're either smitten with Palm or Windows and thats your choice. I decided to buy mine after seeing someone with a Palm iii in a wallet and thinking "That'll be handy". So I went for the Handspring on the grounds that it's got everything the Palm Vx has got, costs less and has a useful looking expansion slot. At the same time a mate bought the Vx!
So far, I've found the machine has impeccable performance - fast, effective, reliable. Everything I'd expect from a £200 piece of kit! But then again, so has my mate's Vx, which, although it cost him an extra £200, is a hell of a lot slimmer and handier for the pocket or wallet...
As for the really useful expansion slot, I thought ...
