The very sleek Edge is made of an anodized aluminum sandwich. There is a top aluminum shell, a bottom shell, and then in between is an translucent plastic body. The aluminum shells have a brushed surface that resists fingerprints and feels nice to the touch.
The Edge comes in 3 color variations. Silver Metallic, Blue Metallic and Red Metallic. I picked Silver just because I liked the bare techno look of it !
It came with a spring loaded metal vertical flip cover, but I've replaced it with a "book cover" style aluminium front & back casing for a little more protection..
- Size: 4.7 x 3.1 x 0.44in (11.9 x 7.9 x 1.1cm) - Weight: 4.8 oz. (136g)
The Edge is nice and slim (even slimmer If I remove my protective cover, and feels good and solid, although not TOO heavy, just not flimsy either.
The front of the Edge has the usual Palm OS 4 application buttons, up/down scroll button, power button/alarm/charger LED, microphone and the screen. The application buttons are made of polished metal and on top have an embossed symbol of the application they represent (Calendar, Address Book, To Do list and Memo). All the buttons have nice tactile feedback when you press them and a nice click.
The power button on the bottom right doubles as a silent alarm and battery charging indicator LED - and although mine has NEVER worked, I really don't miss it ! The LED behind this button is supposed to flash when the Edge charging in the cradle, and also should be a silent alarm indicator.
The Edge display is sharp and crisp. It's not colour, but as far as a 16 level gray scale screen, it is pretty good. The overall screen dimensions are: 3.09 x 2.27in (7.85 x 5.77cm).It has a reverse type backlight for use in the dark, activated by holding the power button for 2 seconds.
The left side of the Edge has the IR port, and the right side of the Edge has the stylus dock. The stylus has a short rail at the top that slides into a slot on the side of the PDA and then snaps into place with a very satisfying click. The tip of the stylus rests in a little holder at the bottom. To remove the stylus, you press a spring loaded button at the top of the stylus which releases the catch. The stylus is metal (except for the tip) and has a nice weight to it.
The back of the Edge is bare except for the reset hole and the Springboard expansion slot - I've never quite figured out what all this is about, although apparently will turn your PDS into a camera, MP3 player or GPS - all things that come built into all kind of things nowadays...
The back of the Edge also has the serial connector at the bottom and connects to the docking cradle. This is quite small and is a translucent deep blue colour. The Edge slips into and out of the cradle very easily. The base of the cradle is weighted so it stays in place on your desk. A USB cable runs from the cradle to your PC, and the AC power adaptor connects to the USB plug - ANOTHER power adaptor behind my desk !
The Edge comes with the following built-in software: - Palm OS software, version 3.5.2H2 - Date Book - Date Book+ (Enhanced date book with expanded views, including weekly, yearly and a list view) - Address Book - To Do List - Memo Pad - Mail - Expense - Advanced calculator with advanced math, trigonometry, business, statistical, and conversion functions - CityTime world clock with day of the week and time for five cities around the globe - HotSync Manager - Games (Giraffe, MineHun, SubHunt & Puzzle)
There are plenty of places where you can download software, and the desktop software is available from the Palm website.
The Palm OS is super easy to use, and all the applications are very intuitive, once you've got the hand of the Grafitti handwriting recognition system, but that's pretty straightforward too (and a reminder card and sticker were supplied with the device). With 8MB of memory (that used to seem like a lot - now my PHONE has 80MB!!!), the Edge can store approximately 12,000 addresses, 10 years of appointments (approx. 6000 records), 6,000 to do items, 6,000 memos & 400 e-mail messages. I'm certainly nowhere NEAR running ot of space...
With the desktop software and the super simple HotSync software, everything on your PDA is replicated on your PC. The Chapura Mirror software (also included) allows you to sync with a range of other organiser type software - I've got mine synching with Outlook for my Calendar and Mail - I prefer the Palm desktop for my contacts.
I still think that the Edge is really a very cool PDA, as evidenced by the fact that I've not upgraded in 5 years, although I am very tempted by the new Lifedrive... Go on, pick up a bargain...
Advantages: Gorgeous looks and feel, lovely cradle, USB sync Disadvantages: Non-upgradeable OS, nasty clip-on Springboard adapter
...PalmOS device currently available.
Handspring seem to have shot themselves in the foot here. Their unique selling point for the Visor range is it's expansion potential via the Springboard slot. Unfortunately, there's no space in the Edge for a slot, so you have to clip-on a Springboard adapter (provided), which spoils the sleek lines of the unit, making it look like the Hunchback of Notre Dame (should that be Notre Palm?).
Apart from the clip-on ... ...of a flashable ROM, meaning you're stuck with operating system provided (in this case 3.5). It does unfortunately suffer from OS 3.5 disease just like the Platinum (see my review here at Ciao for more), despite the very nippy 33MHz VZ processor.
The nice features include the cradle (possibly the best PDA cradle I have ever seen), and the screen which has to be the clearest black & white LCD I have ever seen. The rechargable battery also earns it ...

Advantages: A god cheap handheld Disadvantages: Not widely available
...your cash, check out the Handspring range. It does all the Palm can and at almost £100 cheap. Thats a saving of 33%.
Let me describe it to you.
Looks.
------
Very similar to the Palm. Similar layout of buttons and overall size.
If anything, it appears to be more flat and square than the Palm.
My one here is Silver and looks very modernistic. They do come in a range of colours that include, Orange, Blue, Green, Gold and even Platinum!
Features.
... ...additional programs.
Those it can`t Handspring have an answer for.
At the top is the Springboard Expansion slot. Simply boost your memory with an additonal 16 Mb card to give you 24Mb. Thats 8 more than Palm can offer.
Rather than a push on its a slip on!
You slide the expansion slot into place.
This allows you to put your various peripherals onto the Visor without any worries.
So you can install your Scanner, Camera or Audio device with no ...

Advantages: Build quality is stunning. Fast and reliable. Disadvantages: Expandability for those who need it.
The Visor Edge is probably the best of the classic PalmOS machines. OS 3.5H2 isn't exactly leading Edge (*cough*), but if you want a Palm for the sake of the device itself, you're in for a treat. The case is metal, and the flip cover encloses the screen, so hardly any pocket goop gets in there. The stylus is metal, with a plastic tip, and has a nice weight in the hand like a good pen. The speaker is very loud, and even from a rear jeans pocket it ... ...my Siemens S35i mobile I can check and send email from the pub, up a mountain or in bed, and can back up my SIM card to boot.
The screen is very clear, and good for a range of light from bright daylight to medium room light. The backlight is the negative type, so it needs to be really dark for it to be useful, but I've read eBooks in pitch darkness for over an hour without feeling any eyestrain.
Those familiar with PalmOS as a whole won't find ...

Advantages: Very slim, stylish and light, supported by *alot* of palm software, can update speeker to polyphonic with software Disadvantages: none colour screen
When I first bought this PDA I thought i could only put afew games on, and use afew tools, but I was *amazed* at how much this could actually do. Here are some features that you wouldnt expect it to be able to do:
Crack Password Hashes (Unix/NT/Cisco)
Play 3d Car games
Upgrade the monophonic speaker to polyphonic via software
Save webpages
Emulate a working flight computer
Emulate the matrix code from the movie 'The Matrix'
Help with credit ... ...and you only need to attach one extra cable to charge. I was supprised to find that this PDA has 8mb of RAM, since most other PDA's like it only had around 2MB. Extremely strong, has fallen out of my top pocket onto solid conrete a couple of times, and still works like new!
Extremely occaisionaly, my PDA crashes, and its a simple matter of using a pin the push the reset button. The most exciting time I had with this product is when I found out I ...

Advantages: great value for money, 8MB and OS 3.5 Disadvantages: Ugly and needs batteries
/Vx and the HandspringVisorEdge, but it?s a sturdy workhorse and worth every penny. Unlike the Palm Vx and IIIc it needs batteries because it is not rechargeable, but I?m getting about a month on each pair of batteries.
In summary.
It?s not the most gorgeous PDA on offer but has all the best functionality and is a steal at the moment. Just get one now while you save up for the Palm m505 or the new Sony Clie Colour.
By the way if anybody has one of the new Sony Clie's please drop a review on Ciao and let me know what you think of it....could be my next purchase. ...

Advantages: Useful 'Gadget' to have to if your not very good at remembering things (i.e. me). Its Sony so its well designed and Jog Dial is fantastic. Palm OS PDA is great. Disadvantages: Its a PDA so only has a lifespan of a year unless you are satisfied with it. Memory Stick is expensive and you cant run programs from it.
(Operating System) type of PDA?s left and even then I had so many choices. There are 3 companies that make Palm OS PDAs, which are Palm, Handspring and Sony.
The choice of Palm OS PDA?s for under £100 was limited. There was the Palm 105, which was retailing at about £80 and the HandspringVisorEdge at £99. The Palm 105 didn?t appealed because it had no expandability slot to add more memory later, the screen size was too small and the unit was fairly chunky. The Handspring on the other hand was very sleek looking with an aluminium exterior but had sacrificed some usability and functionality for looks. Palm had also releases a new £80 Zire PDA but with only 2MB of memory and no expandability option, it had too little memory for loading on further applications later.
The VisorEdge was my first choice, but then I realised I had the option ...

Address Book, To Do List, Memo Pad, Mail, Expense, HotSync Manager, World clock, Silent alarm, Fast Lookup, Enhanced Date Book, Advanced Calculator
Manufacturer's product description
Slip it in your pocket. Put it in your purse. You'll barely even notice that you're carrying it. But don't let the size of the Visor Edge deceive you. This is one powerful, rechargeable Palm OS organizer with an address book, date book and so much more. Plus, the detachable Springboard slot gives you infinite expansion possibilities. It is incredibly thin and infinitely expandable. That's the wonder of the Visor Edge handheld. And Handspring has the detachable Springboard slot to thank. Just slide it on, pop in a Springboard module and you're ready to go. So, when you want to listen to music, take a picture, or connect wirelessly, it's all just a snap away. Now you'll never have to deal with AAA batteries again. That's because the Visor Edge is rechargeable. It lasts for weeks on a single charge (based on normal usage, of course). And it recharges quickly - right in the cradle. So now you can synchronize and recharge simultaneously. One look is all it takes and everyone is flipping over the Visor Edge. And then you've just got to have it. All that metal (the real kind, not a plastic imitation), that thin physique, that cutting-edge design… they have even designed an amazingly cool flip cover that protects the screen without compromising size. And, in case you were wondering, Visor Edge is fast, too!
Springboard Expansion Slot, Funky transparent casing and an equally cool hotsync dock, very to use, backlight that enables use in absolute darkness, stylus has a hidden screwdriver function
Tend to crash a lot which is a very bad point thus major data loss, consumes a lot of batteries, dim backlight (*)
