WOO-HOO! I've finally got my hands on the new Handspring Visor Prism!
Luckily, Handspring has learned from its past mistakes and ordering a Visor is now quick and painless.
----------- Blue devil ----------- The first thing that hit me when I opened the Prism box was that the machine looks COOL.
The Prism comes in only one colour -- Handspring calls it ``cobalt blue''.
What the pictures on the Handspring website don't show clearly is that the Prism is actually a very nice dark metallic blue.
The Prism also comes with a new cradle to accommodate the increased thickness. Like the Palm IIIc, the Prism's lithium ion battery is charged up when you put it on the cradle.
What is interesting is that the cradle can also charge the new VisorPhone (a module that turns the Prism into a handphone) at the same time, if you have that Springboard module plugged into the Prism.
The AC adapter plugs into the USB jack of the cradle to charge the battery.
Incidentally, the AC adapter that comes with the Prism has automatic voltage selection and can accept AC voltages from 100-240V. Great if you travel a lot.
First time charge for the Prism is about two hours. After that, you only need to charge it for a few minutes every day to get it fully charged.
Handspring claims that the Prism will last about two weeks or six hours of continuous use on a full charge.
I found that with very heavy use (playing Zap!2016 for extended periods), the battery lasted three days and a little over a week of normal use.
------------- I see colour ------------- The main selling point of the Prism is its support for 16-bit colour, which means that the Prism can display up to 65,536 colours.
This doesn't really mean anything if you are using the default Palm apps, as the PalmOS is generally only in 256 colours anyway.
However, Handspring has ensured that the Prism has a few apps available immediately that take advantage of its 16-bit colour.
Available for download from the company's website is the Handspring Photo Album, which is a 16-bit colour picture viewer.
Handspring has also included a few sample pictures to show the difference between 8-bit colour pictures and the Prism's 16-bit. Quite impressive.
I transferred a few of my own pictures into the Photo Album and the pictures were really nice, with a smooth tone that's just not possible with 256 colours.
Unfortunately, Photo Album does not allow you to save pictures in a larger format than the default 160x140 pixels.
I would have preferred an option to save in a bigger format like FireViewer (FirePad), my preferred picture-viewing app.
Unfortunately, the makers of FireViewer have not updated FireViewer to support 16-bit images yet.
The Prism's colour really comes into its own when playing Zap!2016, a 16-bit colour shoot-em-up game made especially for the Prism.
The difference here is like night and day, with smooth backgrounds and brilliant colours.
As far as the colour LCD screen goes, the Prism seems to be using the same kind of colour LCD technology as the Palm IIIc, which means that it's a very crisp, bright TFT colour screen.
Of course, as with the Palm IIIc, the Prism's colour screen is hard to see in bright sunlight even if you turn the brightness all the way up.
One thing I did notice is that unlike the Palm IIIc's screen, the Prism's LCD screen occasionally flickers.
It only happens every once in a while, though, and the flicker is not at regular intervals.
Think of it as the Visor occasionally needing to blink, like a human.
------------ The hardware ------------ The Prism, just like the monochrome Visor Platinum, uses the new Motorola 33MHz Dragonball VZ processor, which means that this baby goes at at least double the speed of machines based on the 16MHz processor.
We ran a Neal Bridges' Benchmark (Quartus) on the Prism and the result confirmed that the Prism is a whopping 106% faster than the Palm IIIx and 79% faster than the Palm IIIc.
However, apart from slightly faster loading and scrolling times for AvantGo, you won't notice the speed difference.
One thing I was concerned about before upgrading to the Prism was whether my existing accessories would work with it, especially the Targus Stowaway keyboard.
Luckily, the Prism still retains the connector of the Deluxe and with the inward curve at the back of the casing, the Stowaway fits and works like before.
Other than that, most accessories will work with the Prism, with the exception of the MiniJam Springboard module (which requires a software update) and the Go!Type keyboard, which won't fit because of its design.
As for software, I found that my most important application, OmniRemote, wouldn't work.
However, Pacific Neo-Tek, the makers of OmniRemote, have already posted an update and now it works just fine on my Prism.
---------- Eye candy ---------- The Prism, comes with some extra apps not found in Palms, namely Date Book+, City Time world clock and a more advanced calculator.
These apps have now been updated with colour.
While Date Book+ is much the same as the monochrome version, City Time and the calculator have been upgraded to fully support colour.
City Time is the most impressive and now has a green world map surrounded by blue water, which looks pretty nice, although it has no practical use whatsoever except as eye candy.
All these apps work the same way as they worked for the Deluxe.
The Prism also sports the new OS3.5.2H (the ``H'' is for Handspring) which has all the enhancements of OS3.5, including the ability to perform an infrared HotSync.
---------- Conclusion ---------- The Visor Prism is REAL nice.
The support for 16-bit colour puts it right up there with the best colour Pocket PCs, although the 160x160 pixel resolution is still not as good as the Pocket PC's 320x240 pixels.
As usual, what the Prism -- like all Visors -- has going for it is the Springboard slot.
With more and more expansion modules of all kinds coming out these days, it looks as if Handspring's proprietary slot is now gaining acceptance.
The best thing about the Springboard slot is that I can have a modem plugged in to the slot and have the Stowaway keyboard connected at the same time.
This means I can be connected to the Internet and type out messages on a chat program like ICQ instead of slowly writing the messages by hand.
No Palm can do that currently.
Of course, the machine isn't perfect - it is fat and heavy and you are definitely not going to put it in your pocket.
The operating system also cannot be flash upgraded (although software patches are possible), which means you'll have to live with OS3.5.2H.
However, as far as a PalmOS device goes, this baby just can't be beat for features and expandability.
p/s= i bought this through my friend in USA. Im not sure where u can get it here in UK, but u can check out the homepage = http://www.handspring.com/ . hope thats useful!

However, if like me, you plan on upgrading your PDA after a few years, the minor updates that Handspring provide will probably be sufficient.

For colour owners, the availability of colour software is a bit more limited, although greyscale programs should work on colour models too. Software is updated fairly regularly, ...

Advantages: Screen, Fast USB Sync, Springboard slot Disadvantages: Speed, non-upgradeable OS
...because the Prism, like all Handspring Visors, lacks a flashable ROM.
On the positive side, it does have the Springboard slot (see my Visor Deluxe review for more on that), it synchronises with your PC via USB (rather than serial, like all but the most recent Palms) which is much faster, and a rechargeable battery (this can work both ways though, you can carry round a spare set of AAA batteries on the move, whereas it might be hard to find somewhere ...

Advantages: Colourful, Bright, Reactive, lots of thrid party support Disadvantages: hard to find good third party support. hard to see in sunlight,
The Handspring makes organising so easy. You could describe it as fun to use, it’s not bulky and comfortable to hold, but is also solid and chunky and you can feel even the strongest person would have a problem breaking it. Wonderful except for a few flaws, one the cradle connection is temperamental, two third party programs tend to be buggy and can promote the machine to resetting itself constantly. But on the plus, I have dropped mine several times ...

Advantages: It's an improved Vx with a colour screen! Disadvantages: Price
So what happened at Palm? They started listening to their customers? Yes, it's true (partially)! The Palm community have been screaming 'Palm V with a colour screen!' for years, and here it is at last. It closely resembles it's greyscale sibling (the m500), the dimensions being very similar, although this unit is a couple of millimetres thicker.
The screen is a lot nicer than the one found on the Palm IIIc, not only displaying 65,536 colours (as opposed to 256), but looking reasonable in all lighting conditions. I say reasonable because the screen on Handspring's VisorPrism is far superior to this one, it's much brighter, clearer and definately more vibrant. However, the m505's screen is a great all-rounder. It displays just fine in direct sunlight (try that on your HP Jornada 4xx :) and in pitch darkness (try that on your ...
