Review of "Happiness (The Very Best of Ken Dodd) - Ken Dodd"
I strive to give informative, honest and well written reviews from my own experiences.
Hailing from Knotty Ash, Liverpool and born in 1927 Ken Dodd is a legendary figure in the world of comedy in The United Kingdom and in other parts of the world.Better known for his mad hair style, prominent teeth, tickling stick, and ability to reel off rapid fire jokes on absolutely any topic and make people laugh in stage shows lasting up to 5 hours it is also a fact that he has sold over 100 million records in his career, and all from 1 market stall in Knotty Ash. (Hope you liked that one Doddy if you are reading!)
As I write this review the great man is still performing to packed audiences across Great Britain at the age of 81. He still holds a world record for telling 1500 jokes in 3 1/2 hours.
Perhaps less well known is that Ken Dodd is not just a comic legend but also a highly gifted singer and song writer.
The songs that he is probably best known for are "Tears", "Love Is Like A Violin" and "Happiness", the latter of which he usually sings at the end of his comedy stage shows. He has had 19 UK top 40 hits and his most successful was "Tears" which was number 1 for 5 weeks and sold more than 2 million copies.
Don't be fooled into thinking that these well known hits are the limit of his singing talents because they certainly are not.In my opinion "Doddy" as he is affectionately known is a fine, fine and very under rated singer and interpreter of classic ballads. On this 24 track album this is ably demonstrated by his very good versions of "Still", "So Deep Is The Night", "The River", "Eight By Ten" and "Somewhere My Love"
Most of his hit record output was in the 1960s when it was a great era for ballad song writers and when some of the songs were converted versions of Italian composed originals. An example on this album being "The River" which was converted from the Italian song "Le Colline Sono In Fiore". A famous example of this is "It's Now Or Never", the great Elvis Presley hit which was based on "O Sole Mio"So there are some very nice ballads on this album. It may not be to everybody's taste but if you enjoy ballads sang well and with emotion then you will enjoy it very much.
