Well this week I have been suffering from a cold, which I recovered from in record time! One of the little helping hands was a product called Happinose.
PRODUCT Happinose is a clear-ish type of gel in a white tube. The product claims to be a soothing decongestant balm, which relieves congestion and soothes irritated skin in and around the nose. It is stored in a bright yellow box with big red writing, so you should have no problems seeing it on the chemists’ shelf or wherever you buy it. The price I paid for it is £3.45 for a 14g tube that in my opinion is expensive but all medicines seem to be, especially if you buy from the chemists. Still, I like going to the chemists as they can offer more advice that a supermarket assistant can. Happinose is made with the following ingredients: - 0.3 % w/w menthol – Active ingredient Eucalyptol Geranium oil White soft paraffin Light liquid paraffin
PURPOSE The product is meant to soothe the soreness inside and outside your nose and decongest. These symptoms usually occur when you have the common cold, catarrh, head colds and hayfever. I just had the common cold, but I do regularly have catarrh as I am allergic to my pets, but I still love them and I also get hayfever every spring to autumn.
EFFECTS When using this product, I was really excited as I was totally peeved with my blocked nose – especially as it was mainly on one side. I followed the instructions: carefully blow nose first, apply happinose in and around each nostril using little finger and inhale through the nose. This I did. Unfortunately, there was this really heady plant smell which made me feel sicky. I looked at the ingredients and I noticed that one was geranium oil – this must be it, as it really does smell like geraniums and I know what they smell like as my grandmother has loads of them! To be honest, I tried to ignore it as it was better than having a blocked nose. The best effect of the product was that it got rid of the dry skin around my nose and now my nose feels softer and does not sting.
ADVANTAGES My nose felt much softer and was soothed compared to its nasty stinging former self. I felt a lot better as my face hurt so badly before! Happinose is definitely worth the money for this.
DISADVANTAGES A horrible plant smell that is in your nose. It isn’t very great. Also my nose wasn’t very decongested – I still had to continuously blow my nose to get it clear, but Olbas oil or Vic’s always does the job, so I was disappointed. Also I think that £3.45 isn’t a fair price for something so small.
SUITABILITY This product is suitable for anyone over the age of five years who are not sensitive to any of the ingredients. There is a different dosage for people of different ages. These are: Adults – apply up to 1cm of happinose Children 10 years and over – apply up to ½ cm Children between 5 and 9 years – apply up to ¼ cm I think that it is a bit confusing on the leaflet as they state doses for children over 10 years but how old do they have to be to qualify for adult? This varies with different medicines – is it 14 like paracetamol? Or older? I think that the leaflet needs to be more precise.
OVERALL I would buy this again for its soothing properties but I recommend using Vic’s Vapourub or Olbas oil to help decongest and aid breathing. It is very good at relieving a sore nose, though and my nose did feel much happier and isn't red or cracked anymore so I can go out this weekend looking normal!
Advantages: Simple, effective,Soothing and Decongesting Ointment Disadvantages: Quite expensive for what it is....
I first saw this advertised in the National Papers about six months ago. I did look at the advert in a somewhat quizzical manner, due to its' name(It sounds like a gnome in a fairy-tale!)A time after this I developed what you might call a bit of a stinker in the cold stakes.
I don't know about you,but one of the most annoying things I find about having a cold is the sore, chapped and yet blocked up nose that develops.Having not found anything else ... ...this stuff. It worked out quite expensive (about £3.60 for a 14g tube) but if you're anything like me then money is no object when it comes to treating colds.
The thing which strikes you upon opening the tube is the odour;it smells of turkish delight! This makes a change and smells very pleasent. It's main ingredients are Menthol,Eucalyptol (Eucalyptus to you and me!),Geranium oil,White soft paraffin and Light liquid paraffin.
This combination ensures ...

Advantages: soothing, not a stronge smell Disadvantages: dosn't cure a cold
...we get colds. Happinose - a very good invention. I bought my tube last year its lasted me that long. It was around £3.50 not cheap, but better than walking round with a Rudolph nose. It doesn't smell as bad as Vicks or Olbas oil which believe me I'm wearing a cocktail of today. It contains Geranium Oil and Eucalyptol which helps in unblocking the sinus'. Its quite simple to use just rub it on your nose where its sore, it disolves fairly easily and ... ...as you need. Some things I wish it would do is give me my sense of taste and smell back and cure my chesty cough - but you can't have everything. Oh and it doesn't blow your head off like those Sinex nasal sprays either. I hope I don't pass my germs down the net to you all. ...

Advantages: clears the nose Disadvantages: expensive
The name of this cold cure made we quite suspicious when I first saw it. I ask you, 'Happinose???' Now I thought a 'Happinose' might be the same thing as a 'sticky beak' or even a 'snekkie'. ___________ For those of you who aren't multilingual here is a translation: sticky beak......Aussiespeak for 'nosey parker'. snekkie .........Cumbrian talk for the same thing. ____________ Both activities are usually, but not always, carried out from behind net ... ...____________ However, back to my op. 'Happinose' turned out to be nowhere near as interesting as either of the above mentioned passtimes. (Fair enough, they don't cure colds but they keep you entertained while you are confined to the house.) This ointment comes in a tiny tube, (just 14g) and it costs £3.59. It had better work miracles, I thought, as I grudgingly handed over a five pound note. 'Dat's a bit buch,' I muttered under my breath, 'just ...

Advantages: Very soothing Disadvantages: Overall not as good as Vicks or Karvol
Happinose is "a nasal decongestant balm with natural essential oils". I bought some of this for my niece having seen an advert for it (I thought the name was cute!). Unfortunately having purchased it I discovered that it was not suitable for children under five so it was useless for my niece but I have since tried it on myself and on my 7 year old.
It is not nearly as strong smelling as Vicks Vaporub and doesn't sting when you put in on your nose. ... ...lessens the "Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer" effect I always seem to get when I have a cold. It also has a moisturing balm which helps to prevent that oh so attractive flakey nose appearance I get when the cold finally starts to go!! It is not as greasy as Vicks either, so doesn't give you that very shiny look as if you have applied half a tub of Vaseline to your nose as well!
I thought it was fairly pricey for what it is (£3.79 for a 14g tube) and ...

Advantages: Helps decongest but more so, relieves soreness, dryness and stinging. Disadvantages: None.
Great product! Really soothes any soreness and softens the inside of the nose when it is dry and flakey. Does decongest but maybe not as well as some other products. I use it in combination with decongestant tablets or something like lockets.
At 3.45 everybody seems to be saying it is expensive. I personally think that is a small price to pay when you see how much more pleasent your sore nose will feel after use. The smell is unoffensive and not ... ...and overnight it stops your nose from drying out inside.
I was disappointed that I could not seem to find it anywhere when I went back to the UK last (I now live in Spain), and like the product so much I have just ordered 2 tubes which because of the postage cost me 11.00. (this is pounds but my spanish keyboard does not have a pound sign). To me it is worth every penny. ...
