Steer clear of this Hard Drive.
Review of Maxtor DiamondMax 10 160 GB by
JJS77
Advantages: Value.
Disadvantages: Unreliable, Noisey, maxtor's warranty is a joke.
...I decided to run the Maxtor utility suite to find out more and after a quick scan it said it had a permanent failure and to run an "in depth scan", this is what I then did. After two hours of "Deep Scanning" it then threw out an error code at me and told me to contact Maxtor. I accepted this and contacted Maxtor for a solution. Maxtor then confirmed it had started breaking down and failing as stated by the error code I had given them, but then they ... ...I will not be using Maxtor or Seagate (both the same company) I will be sticking to my old reliable Hitachi, Samsung etc drives. It seems the higher capacity hard drive you pick the more prone it is to failure too, as my friend bought a 250gb Maxtor Sata drive and it failed faster than mine, and after searching through lots of forums I have discovered I am not on my own at all. ...

Maxtor DiamondMax Plus9 160GB SATA Hard Drive
Review of Maxtor QuickView Hard drive 160 GB by
patwanet
Advantages: Fast and Silent, Easy SATA installation, Two flavours to choose from
Disadvantages: Dismal performance
Maxtor are one of the 3 leading hard drive manufacturers in the personal and business computing market at the moment along with Western Digital and Hitachi. They are also the cheapest. Unfortunately, the saying that price doesn't equals quality is true here. Too true.
The 160GB version of the DiamondMax Plus9 can be purchased online from around £51.00 onwards. And with the way hard drive prices have fallen recently, that's not bad at all. But as ... ...finally managed to make the Maxtor accessible. The drive then worked fine for 3 months.
Last Week, I decided to re-install Windows again as there were a few bugs related to my anti-virus software. I started to backup the contents of my new hard drive onto the Maxtor, which i had been using as the backup/storage drive. About 5 minutes into the copy operation, and with a good 80GB left on the drive, I got the dreaded blue error screen. Since then, ...

Seemed good, until it failed on me.
Review of Maxtor DiamondMax 17 160 GB by
Dan39
Advantages: warranty
Disadvantages: drive failed
Had this drive for under a year and it has failed on me. I am trying to recover data, but its not looking too good. Takes a while for me to even get windows to recognize that there is another HDD connected(not using it as primary drive, just an extra for storage, luckily), and then it says it is not formatted with any file system, and cannot read it. I am positive it is a NTFS with like 140 GB of data on it. I didn't do anything for it to fail. I ... ...act funny, some files taking long to read, some going corrupt, and now it wont even work. Data recovery program says it is finding lots of files, so hopefully I will be able to recover most of them, but that doesn't really help since the other biggest drive I have is 80 GB... and then I have a couple 10 GB drives that are like 10 years old(but still working fine).
The drive is still under warranty and they say they will replace it on site, but I ...

The fine touch of OneTouch
Review of Maxtor OneTouch Hard drive 160 GB by
trevorbrock
Advantages: Easy to use, cheapish to buy and does what needs to be done.
Disadvantages: A wee bit noisy.
...to do so, as the Maxtor needs to do a complete scan and backup of all your data. The option of USB2 and Firewire connections does speed this process up and is a nice touch if your computer has the facility.
Operation.
I set mine to automatically backup on Friday evenings, once a week. You can set your own fequency and times to suit your needs.
It does the job each week for me in about ten minutes, and I can keep using the PC while it is doing ... ...all albumed away on the Maxtor and keep that main drive freed up.
The Maxtor will simply appear on My Computer as another hard disk, and you can drag and drop til you drop.!
Cons
I have a noisy PC - 7 or 8 fans - it helps create the impression that I am really hard at work on a brilliant PC !
When the PC is on, there is no obvious extra noise from the Maxtor.
But when the PG is off, the Maxtor does purr away noticeably.
Silence freaks will ...

Maxtor 500GB EXTERNAL
Review of Maxtor Basics Desktop 500 GB by
Tribunal18
Advantages: Maximizes the amount of data vs the cost of the product
Disadvantages: heat issues, cord connectivity, and small installation problems.
...but I honestly only order Maxtor for my hard drives. Now the only downside to the Maxtor 500 GB is that it is an external drive that, if not careful, can overheat and cause connectivity problems, transfer speed issues, or just annoyance from when the usb gets knocked out. That being said, if you can get past the downside of have an external I would recommend this product to anyone not using a Mac. The only reason I do not recommend this to Mac owners ...
