One of the coolest speakers i saw come out were the Kardon Soundsticks IImultimedia speaker system. I didnt actually see them online or anything like that, the speakers are actually somewhat endorsed by apple, as I first saw them hooked up to almost all of the ipod's and apple mac's on display.
The first thing i noticed was their unusual look - as obviously they are transparent. For me, that went on the plus side of things, as I can'r resist a funky unusual design. The subwoofer has an interesting shape that I can't quite describe but the unit is nicely accompanied with silver screws wires and other general add ons, so that nothing is too imposing.
The only negative thing that I can think of is the size of the whole system, particurlaly the subwoofer. Bearing in mind that these are pc speakers, people do not always have the space for this size of speaker, no matter how good the sound is; and although the second amazing thing I noticed was the clear crisp and potentially booming sound, I couldnt help to thing where the hell I was going to put the speaker when I got it home.
Comparing it to the other popular speaker I noticed was being used by apple - made by Bose, I could see that although the impulse buy was the soundsticks as they looked really cool and sounded pretty good. The Bose, on the other hand packed a rival punch like no other, and proved why they are still the king of speakers - up there with other makes such as Bang and Olfusen. The tiny, unobtrusive speakers made by Bose packed a massive booming clear volume, which instantly surpassed that of the soundsticks.
The only thing that would have the upper hand on the Bose speakers was the groovy unique design, which you could picture in a large, roomy minamalist appartment! Another good element of the soundsticks is that they are really easy to install, as when I got them home - and cleared half of my desk to put them on - they were ready to go in all but 40 seconds.
They are fairly priced - I was able to pick up some for £50 (special offer!!) but soon returned them as I found them far too impractical and although nice, didn't fit the design of my room. Instead I bought the Bose speakers, and although they cost a lot more they were worth it - you can really hear the clarity of sounds like never before on them! Not that im saying the soundsticks are bad - not at all... If I had a huge desk then I would have happily stuck with them and they would have eventually become a nice addition to the pc. But having a black/silver pc the seethrough/silver design didnt really suit.
Overall the soundsticks are good for their money as long as you dont have to pay more than £100 for them! Only saying that as I got mine for £50 (I think that It was because I actually bought an ipod.. not too sure). Good value, good sound and good design = good speakers!
