My Harmon Kardon Soundsticks are plugged into the back of a Mac and have certainly livened things up. I haven't needed to upgrade soundcards or do anything technical whatsoever in my pursuit of fantastically rich sound quality.
Firstly, these sound better than anything else on the market within the price bracket. The sound is rich and deep with ample adjustment for either volume or base. The two sticks and base unit come with an instruction manual, but these really are so simple to use that you can throw the manual in the recycling bin. The speaker set simply plugs into the jack socket of your PC/Mac/laptop and have their own power supply which connects to the base unit. Seperate cabling attaches the sticks to the central base unit.
Once plugged in you get a cool blue underlit main unit which looks really stylish. The sticks themselves are mounted on adjustable rubber hoops which keep them firmly planted to your desk with adjustment to any angle you choose. In fact the whole set is well crafted and has a feel of good robust quality.
Cabling is ample to ensure you can achieve a good set up whatever your space requirements or limitations.
Now here's the good part. Once these are plugged in you simply will not believe the awesome sound quality coming out of these little gems. The sound is incredibly rich and clear for such a cheap set of speakers. The base unit has its own adjustment if you really want to send tremors through to the neighbours, and tremors they will produce! Seriously, I'm not exaggerating. I've almost fallen out with my neighbours since installing these whilst the speaker set really tempts you to crank the volume up.
Since purchasing the Soundsticks the hifi unit, worth £900, got relegated to the loft as the Soundsticks do a better job, look great and save space.
On the left hand stick there are volume control pads that are nice and responsive to the touch.
It became apparent to me that these speakers have a variety of uses and I've had mine plugged into the TV, stereo and games consoles in addition to the Mac. In fact, if you're looking for a cheap alternative to surround sound for your favourite movies, these will do the job very well. For example, plug these into your TV next time Mission Impossible is on and you'll see what I mean.
Harmon Kardon Soundsticks have been on the market for a few years now. I've owned mine for 2.5 years without any issues and I haven't heard better units during this time. I haven't seen better looking units either. Really great value for such amazing sound.
In summary, great speakers! Rich, deep sound. Excellent quality way to liven up your iTunes selection. Just send a polite warning or a set of ear defenders to your neighbours.
