extraordinary and exciting adventures? In this first book in the series which catapulted J.K. Rowling to the very heights of literary fame Harry discovers that he is no ordinary boy but a wizard of great renown and that he is expected at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Moreover at Hogwarts he encounters "He Who Must Not Be Named" a master of magic whose ambition is more dark and terrifying than Harry can possibly imagine.

-What's it all about?
Well, quite frankly, if you haven't heard of HARRY POTTER - one would beg the question - WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?? But for those of you who have been spending the last few years under a rock - here is a breif outline of what it's about...
Harry Potter is a boy who at the age of 11 finds out that he isn't the 'normal' boy he thought he was, he is infact a wizard! So begins a whirlwind of adventure and magic as he prepares to spend the next 7 years of his life at Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry. His parents died in car crash when he was a baby - or so he believes, until the plot unravels that the Dark Lord Voldemort played a greater part in his past, his present and the rest of the wizarding world's future.
This book has some of the most memorable and lovable characters I have come across in a series of books. From the brainaic Hermione to the whimsical Professor Dumbledore, from the snarling Professor Snape to the bumbling Professor Quirrell.
-How does it translate from book to audio?
I have been a fan of the books for a long long time, and when a 7 hour car journey was looming...I thought it time to give them a go...and GLAD I did. This is mainly because of Mr.Stephen Fry. He is the absolute perfect choice to read these books. One can't help but be spell bound by his soothing quality of voice and diction.
Unfortunately, I cringed a few times when he created a voice for a character, when in my head they sounded completely different. But this was purely personal and obviously, this is irrelevant if you are listening for the very first time.
The cost was £25, which I thought was rather expensive at first. Very worth while however, if you have difficulty reading or prefer to hear a story rather than read! They are presented well in 2 double cd boxes that are very durable. I feel you are getting value for money as they last over 8 hours, and can be played over and over again!
-Would I recommend them?
Without a doubt - if you are a Harry fan and haven't listened to them as read by Stephen Fry, then go out get a copy immediately. If you are sceptical about the Potter books, try the audio and put it on in the car (or as you try to sleep at night) - you will be pleasantly surprised.
The only problems I found, as with ANY audio book - is if you miss a bit - you either have to go back to the beginning of that section, or fumble around with the rewind button in hope of going back just the right amount.I could happily listen to Stephen Fry reading the Harry books all day!

A Definite must for all Muggles Review ofHarry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (Audio Book) - J.K. Rowling, Stephen Fry (Narrator)by

Advantages: Written by J.K. Rowling and read by Stephen Fry! Disadvantages: Can be quite expensive in the shops
Being 18 years of age, it some what pains me to admit that I have gained as much pleasure from these cassettes as my 10 year old neice!
But that, however is the beauty of J.K. Rowlings creation, her books have long since been admired by the young and the old. Therefore it would not seem surprising that after the paperback release of "Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone" it could soon be bought as an audio book. There are however many surprises ... ...good.
The audio book that I was forced to "borrow" from my neice is refreshingly well packaged, with all the cassettes being contained in one plastic box, roughly the size of the book (though slightly shorter and wider.) The set consists of 6 cassettes that tell the complete and unabridged story. Six cassettes may seem like a large number, especially if you wish to transport them to keep small children happy. Yet the novel packaging idea means they ...

Advantages: Excellently read by Stephen Fry in your own home :) Disadvantages: It's POMfrey man! POMfrey!
...your minds eye .
Harry is made to sound just what he is , 11 and vulnerable , Mr and Mrs Dursley , harsh and mean , Hagrid ,big clumsy and friendly , Dumbledore a wise old man , Draco ,a sneering ,bigotted little rich boy and Snape a devious , unkind wizard who somehow got a job as a teacher....
We listened to this story when we are busy crafting (which happens a great deal in this house).
Your hands and eyes are too busy when crafting to read ... ...when we first read about Harry and still at 16 and 18 like to hear the stories read to them (and so do I).
I have seen this Audio book for sale on CD (7 discs)and would recommend that over the cassette tape version as the amount this will be played, a cassette tape is almost bound to break .
Online this is about £20 and upwards ...

Even better when read by Stephen Fry Review ofHarry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (Audio Book) - J.K. Rowling, Stephen Fry (Narrator)by

Advantages: stephen fry's storytelling ability, can listen to it and do other things Disadvantages: number of cds (7)
...fan of all things Harry Potter, I was delighted that now, i could not only read the books, but have them read to me by a great actor and storyteller whenever I was feeling too lazy to read it myself.
Lot's of people may wonder why a person who is perfectly capable of reading themselves would want to have audio books, but it is a completely different experience to reading them yourself. There's something heart-warming about being read a book, and ... ...gives a great insight into the imagination of Stephen Fry as he tells the story to you in the different voices he invents for each character.
The drawbacks for me with these cds was the number of them, as every few chapters or so, you would have to take the cd out and replace it with the other one, which can be a pain if you were doing other things whilst listening! The other negative for me was the little cd bags that they came in! They're grey ...

Advantages: Good voice work, Imaginative story Disadvantages: None
The first Harry Potter book, written back in 1997 was a huge success having both children and adults all over the world captivated. Personally I've never been a fan of Audio books, But I was pleasantly surprised by this. Narrated by the quintessentially English reader of Stephen Fry, who brings the characters to life using a clever diversity of accents and voice play bring the characters to life, which children will love! Fry also does very well ... ...too fast so that you lose the plot and have to rewind the tape to re-find the last bit that you understood. Overall: - The story is imaginative, intelligent and captivating. Rowling has created a magical world that both adults and children wish they could be a part of... Fry also is fantastic, they really couldn't have found a better person to read the story aloud. His clever use of accents and voice play and his English demenour work well together ...
