Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban Why read this one? I have recently enjoyed the first instalments in the Harry Potter series and was eager to continue. I remembered the movie that was based on this book being one of my favourites – I had high hopes. Short Synopsis… Harry Potter has survived death three times in his young life. Now aged thirteen he believes he has seen an omen that predicts death for the observer – predictions by a medium at Hogwarts repeatedly confirm this fear, though he does take those misty predictions with a pinch of salt. The sight of a black, menacing, dog is not ... more

Advantages Advantages A darker plot, a stonger realism, a greater adventure

Disadvantages Disadvantages Younger children may find this book frightening at times.

AZKABAN… the wizard prison, dark, impenetrable, where the darkest witches and wizards slowly turn mad as the to live is stolen away. No wonder Azkaban evokes as much fear at being named than the Dark Lord Voldemort himself. Many of Voldemort’s own supporters were locked up there under the care of the Dementors. The DEMENTORS… hooded creatures of nightmares, with rotten skeletal fingers. The air goes cold as they suck the hope and joy out of you. Those who see beyond the hood are never able to tell of what they see, their soul swallowed by the Dementor’s Kiss. The ... more

Advantages Advantages Exciting, interesting, touching. Messages that transcend time and place.

Disadvantages Disadvantages The writing itself, unlike the messages, is sometimes less than inspiring.

So, another year has passed in the life of Harry Potter. Can the third year of his schooling at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry be as exciting and captivating as the first two? So often before, I have read a series of books and whilst some just keep getting better, others distinctly run out of steam as the series progresses. So which was Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban to be? A mediocre re-writing of the previous books in the series, or a fresh and exciting new book, full of new adventures? Well, you’ll have to make up your own mind, but here is my view! For those of ... more

Advantages Advantages A good read, good twist, goo writing, good all round!

Disadvantages Disadvantages A bit childish at times for older readers.

Well, at 6pm last night, I finished the third book in the Harry Potter series. Some people could’ve finished it in under a day, but I like to take in what I read and do it over a length of time. I began to read it exactly a week before, and that was only for one reason. I’d read so many reviews on the NEW Harry Potter book – Order of the phoenix – I wanted to see what all the hype was about. Why did everyone talk about it highly? What was so interesting that it drew adult and younger readers? I’d had Harry Potter Prisoner of Azkaban for my birthday over 3 years ... more
