It is not an unusual phenomenon for cats for get fleas from time to time, those tell tale sudden moves by cats gnawing on their fur is a sure fire indication that something nasty is nestling in their fur! I usually de flea my cats every month during the summer – using those handy drops available from the vets and every 2 months during the winter to do my bit to murder these nasty little pests.
When you de flea your animals do you always de flea your house? No I don’t either, unless there is good indication that the cats actually have fleas. If you are not sure that your animals have fleas, try this handy trick. Stroke offending animal and obtain some fur and associated gubbins, place on a damp tissue. If there are black specks, these are likely to be flea droppings – when dampened they will turn reddish colour – the sucked blood from your housemate! If this is the case urgent de fleaing action is required! Once you have de bugged your animal turn your attentions to your home, and remember that fleas, if present on the animal will inevitably transfer to your soft furnishings too! A very unpleasant thought indeed, one that makes me itch just thinking about it!
There are a number of flea killing products available on the market from drops placed in the food to sprays and drops placed on the next. It is all very well and good to regularly de-flea your animals, but what about your home? Remember fleas lay eggs, those eggs hatch out and the little flea will be hungry for some FOOD! That food may take shape in either your cat or dog or even YOU! Feeling itchy yet?
I have used a variety of home flea products over the years, but I have found what I feel is the best for my home and the easiest to use. I originally picked it up in Safeway on their bargain shelf for £4.00 but it is available from Pets at home, or any good pet supplier.
The bottle is 473ml size and comes in a rather funky silvery and yellow plastic bottle with a trigger spray. TO use, ensure all pets are removed from the area to be treated. Shake the bottle well and simply turn the nozzle on the trigger to ‘spray’ and spray your soft furnishings. When I say soft furnishing it includes everything, mattresses and pillows and duvets especially if your cats are allowed to sleep on beds. Carpets and curtains should of course be included, my cats love to sit on the window sills looking out, as they brush against the curtain fabric this could be a ‘hive’ of activity of the flea variety! Beware of over wetting your fabrics with the spray, a light spray should be sufficient to stop the little blighters in their tracks! Once you have treated the room, shut the door and leave for an hour. After an hour air the room and the treated furnishings, which should now be dry. That’s it, it takes about 10 minutes to treat one room. One treatment with this spray will give you 7 whole months protection!
Some health and safety precautions that I feel should be mentioned about this flea and tick spray are, it is NOT to be used on animals themselves, a separate product should be purchased. Spraying this on them would cause them harm. IF the spray comes into contact with your skin, wash immediately – I personally choose to wear gloves whilst treating my home, I generally choose to do it before we go out for the day, to ensure no one touches anything treated before they should do. As with all ‘medication’ whether for animals or pets, it should be kept well out of the reach of children, and NEVER transferred into another bottle or dispenser. Ensure that all fish and other tank animals are either removed from the area to be treated or well covered if removal is not possible. When treating dining or kitchen areas make sure any foodstuffs are removed or adequately covered. I forgot to move the fruit bowl the other day whilst treating the lounge, and to be safe threw everything away. Even if all your crockery/pans and cutlery are away in cupboards remember to cover or remove you’re draining board too!
The great advantages this product has over other products I have used around the home are that it comes in a trigger spray – whenever I use an aerosol spray, my cats and dog go bananas thinking it is coming in their direction! There is NO SMELL to the spray, meaning you do not half kill yourself whilst trying to de flea your home. There is no sticky feeling to fabrics after treatment, I once used a home flea product and it left the most revolting ‘greasy’ feel to all my curtains and cushions they all had to be cleaned! The biggest advantage of the product is that one treatment prevents any eggs present from maturing and gives up to 7 months continuous protection! I have used the 473ml spray to treat all the soft furnishing in my 3 bedroom house and still have half the bottle left, so price wise it is very economical, although when preventing your homes and families from becoming flea infested no price is too much to pay!
