Like all of the Harvest Moon games you'll begin the game with a farm that's overrun with weeds and some tools that will help you continue the game. You can choose the name of your farm and character aswell as a name for you cat and dog. The game revolves around farming and after certain objectives have been met a sprite will appear and go down to the hut where they all live. The tools you'll start off with are a sickle for cutting down weeds, an axe, hammer, hoe and a watering can.
The only buildings on your farm right now is your tiny house, a stable and another house that belongs to someone else. If you want some new buildings then you'll have to ring Gotz the woodcutter on the telephone in the game house, other shops can be reached with this telephone where you can buy seeds, chickens and cows.
Animals are a big issue in Harvest Moon, festivals are hosted for them, they give you produce which you can sell for a lot of money and you can actually pet them. You'll have to buy a pair of touch panel gloves from a character and then walk up to a animal, the animal appears on the bottom screen which you can interact with the stylus.
Throughout the game your character will appear on the top screen and the bottom interacting screen will have the rucksack items on view, the save menu, the map, assets page and the sprite channel. The sprite channel is hosted by sprites and new channels can be unlocked with special sprites you discover. The first channels you're given is the weather channel and a tutorial one where you can look for farming tips.
After finding a certain amount of sprites you'll be asked to come to a celebration where they'll be opening a new help system. If you want to get help from a sprite with the farming you'll have to earn medals by playing gambling games with the sprites.
Mining is also a way to earn money for seeds and other things, the only place you can mine in is inside a cave nearby a waterfall. You'll need the hoe and hammer for this, the first mining area is an area where you dig up money and items you can sell or give to a girl you want to marry in the game. The other area will need a hammer to use on rocks before you can till the ground.
There are four months in a Harvest Moon year and each month has new festivals for you to attend. There are sheep festivals, chicken competitions and all of these brings the community closer and makes people like you more. You're allowed to get married to one woman in the game and have one child with her, you'll have to woo her into marrying you by giving her flowers and other present until the heart icon that appears next to her when you talk to her turns red.
An extra option to this game is being able to connect to Mineral town with the DS, the Gameboy Advance games Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral town or Harvest Moon: More friends of Mineral town can be put into the GBA slot in the DS and then you'll be able to play with the characters in the other game.
The instruction manual that is given with the game is very helpful with new players, the controls are in here as well as shop opening times, characters profiles and birthdays and information about farming.
Having been a fan of the PS1 Harvest Moon game I was delighted to find a DS version that I could take around with me. It was easy to control the character and to clear my farm of weeds although I sometimes still forget the shop opening times even when I look at the instruction manual. This game is highly addictive in a good way and I found myself playing for several hours non-stop. The graphics may not appeal to all audiences but the characters and animals reminded me of the PS1 version and added to the cute factor with the small cartoon illustrations that appear when you talk to characters. One thing I found annoying was the background music which didn't change at all and it was so annoying that I ended up turning the sound down. Fans of the Harvest Moon series and games related to farming will enjoy this and will get many months of fun out of this what ever age you are.
Advantages: Replay value, Easy to get into, Addictive Disadvantages: Music can get repetitive
...For those who don't know, Harvest Moon is a video game series that has progressed from the SNES to the N64 to the PSX and all the way to the 'Cube and now, the Nintendo DS. Harvest Moon is an RPG (Role Playing Game) which is completely non-violent - unless you include destroying a few dark creatures down the mines.

The game begins with a nice little cutscene with the Witch Princess (new as far as i can tell) and the Harvest Goddess. The Witch inadvertently makes the Harvest Goddess turn to stone and vanish. In an attempt to rectify the situation, she sends all ...

...saw my daughter had received harvest Moon for her DS on her birthday. Lately I had seen it advertised more and more on tv and it looked like a game I could easily get lost in.

The aim of this game is to find the magic elves which as far as i can tell so far happens from random events, these elves can then help you run your farm e.g watering crops, collecting lumber. Advantages: Whole family are able to watch play Disadvantages: Have to play as a boy, only uses the joystick and buttons
After playing Harvestmoon on the NintendoDS (never actually finished it but love playing it) we made a family purchase for the wii so that we could all play and watch together. What a big disappointment, the game is not at all what I was expecting, like the DS game you have to be a boy you can't decide what sex to be which is fine but you would think that the developers would have added some extra options. Don't buy this game expecting to use the wii remote at all, you basically just use the joystick and buttons which makes me wonder why Nintendo made it accessible for the wii. I found it quite difficult to work out what controls to use for certain functions, the instruction booklet is helpful to a point but does not explain how to do some of the most used functions like filling your watering can!
I wish there was a way to skip ...
Advantages: Small, fun, reasonably cheap. Disadvantages: The amount of time you may use it.
the games what they are, your able to draw things, control characters, animals, move around and many more features with this feature, just make sure you don't loose the pen, although they are reasonably cheap to replace.
Games
Being made by Nintendo there are many Mario/Princess Peach/Pokemon games that you'll only find with Nintendo as well as other popular games for the DS on no other consoles such as 'HarvestMoon'.
It also has a unique set of games such as 'brain training' that keep your mind active and more efficient, didn't expect that on a game console?
Sound
The sound isn't brilliant, voices and such; I haven't heard any on games so far and the often repetitive noise can get annoying, although the volume is easy to control and it can play loud, so easy to annoy the parents ;)
Battery
The battery does have ...

Manufacturer's product description
Fans of the Harvest Moon series will soon see that they're tilling familiar soil with the Nintendo DS version. Setting up your farmstead while maintaining relationships with the local honeys puts forward hours of challenges for you. Luckily the Harvest Sprites can help you on a day-to-day basis. As you perform tasks in the game you discover a Harvest Sprite once you hit certain benchmarks (such as chopping so much wood or cutting so much grass). Once you discover a Harvest Sprite you can visit their tree - a home the Keebler elves would envy. There you can request that a group of Harvest Sprites help you with some duties whether it's watering your crops or helping you with your stamina. They don't work for free though. You need to give them medals. You can buy medals or earn them by beating the house in a poker minigame. Hey Harvest Sprites love their table games. Whether you're farming wooing mining or building you'll need to move fast. Time really flies once you're out and about in the sun. When you are inside buildings or the mine time will stop so that you can get your work done.
