Made by Hasbro, Connect 4 is a devillishly simple strategy-based counter game for 2 players, whereby each player must attempt to get their counters (red or yellow) to line up 4 in a row, either horizontally, vertically or diagonally, and the other player must attempt to block this, whilst simultanously striving for the same goal with their own counters.
The counters are slotted into a vertical, stand-up grid that sits on the table between the players, with the game being quick and easy to set up in moments, and with games only lasting for a couple of minutes each, so younger children re unlikely to grow bored and lose interest mid-game. There is a tactile pleasure to be had in slotting one's counters into place on the grid, which, combined with the vibrant colour scheme, will help to endear the game to younger children (say from 6 or 7 onwards)
As regards strategy, the game is a simple but rich exercise in cat-and-mouse tactics, as players attempt to lure their opponents into catch-22 situations whereby whatever move their opponent takes they will end up allowing the other player to make the sought-for fout-in-a-row pattern. Essentially the game is built around keen observation, obfuscation of tactics and the odd bit of good old fashioned luck.
Its a straightforward and engaging game that stimulates the brain in a gentle manner, and the travel version is ideal for whiling away long car/train journeys and a constructive way to keep kids (and big kids) occupied.
