Iron Man

Advantages: Good story, fun characters
Disadvantages: None

For anyone who reads comics you will know that Iron Man is a Marvel creation. I didn't, my comic knowledge goes about as far as Spiderman and Superman so I was unaware that Iron Man was taken from this genre. The Iron Man Movie was released in 2008. It is a superhero film and is in very much the same ilk as Spiderman and Superman, good triumphing over evil, the dastardly baddie, the epic battle (pow, kerpow, take that@!!***< etc). Iron Man's alter ego is Tony Stark, a billionaire industrialist who has made his money in the company firm, Stark Industries, selling weapons. He is your stereotypical player, smooth, suave and loves his toys and gadgets. During a business trip to Afghanistan to showcase his latest weapons he is kidnapped and held in captivity. I Am Iron Man

Advantages: Great central performance
Disadvantages: 'Durkha, durkha' terrorists, many plot holes

Superhero films are probably my guiltiest of guilty pleasures. I enjoy them pretty much unconditionally because I'm a nerd. But unlike the kind of nerd who begins criticising a comic adaptation as soon as the first publicity shots show that the hero's costume has been 'updated' - you know, the sort of fan who writes unintentionally hilarious screeds about their childhoods being ruined by the shade of Superman's new cape - I never really read many comics as a child. So when I go and see a film like Iron Man, it's safe in the knowledge that I'm about to see a hugely silly film with lots of cool explosions and a terrific cast, and a vague attempt at a 'serious' subtext so that the director can look his parents in the eye unashamed over Christmas dinner.
