enjoyment. Placed in a compact, round 200g light shapely case, the device with its 3.6" LCD (320x240 pixels) and integrated stereo loudspeaker system becomes an ideal travel companion for entertainment in the vest-pocket format. Portable entertainment while travelling or on vacation is now the main thing, because all important playback functions are now combined in the device with the size of just 12 x 7.8 x 2 cm: These include: reception of digital TV-/radio programmes (DVB-T) via a fold-out antenna (UHF/VHF-band), the retrieval of Teletext- and EPG-information as well as the use as digital image viewer (JPEG), audio player (MP3, WAV) or video player for the file formats MPG, VOB and AVI (MPEG4 ASP, XviD, DivX 4.0/5.0). Multimedia contents can be loaded either directly via an SD/MMC-memory card or via a USB-stick. Furthermore, connections for a 3.5 mm stereo headphone, an external antenna, the accompanying power unit and the output of the audio-/video signals are also available via an accompanying AV-cable. The power in the portable use is supplied by a special lithium battery integrated in the device, but which is easiily accessible and can be replaced. The average battery life in the DVB-T mode is around 3 hours and in the video-player mode approx. 4 hours.
Advantages: Good picture and sound quality, easy to use Disadvantages: Cheap looking
The MediaMVP from Hauppauge is an interesting example of an increasing trend in network devices. Using a customised version of Linux, it provides a quick, easy and convenient way to send sound and vision from a PC on your network to your TV and/or HiFi.
What's in the box
As well as the MediaMVP itself, you get the driver CD, a special SCART cable, a short LAN cable (almost certainly too short for most people), a very compact external PSU and a stand to hold the device vertically.
Installation
Setting up consists of first installing some server software on your PC. As well as handling the PC's end of things, the server software lets you select which directories and files are made available to the MediaMVP. The MediaMVP is then connected to the network via a standard RJ45 network connector and to your TV via a single SCART ...
Advantages: Small, cheap, easy to use Disadvantages: Sometimes locks up; non standard connectors. No Top-up TV card slot

. Now how does a child like him manage to get a TV Card with his sort of pocket money and get good quality for his money? Simple! He went and bought himself a Hauppauge WinTV Express card.
This card is an analogue type card (meaning that it isn't digital) that arrives in a rather large box unbefitting the contents that are contained within. You get merely the TV Card, audio cable to link the card to your sound card, manual and software CD. You can hear it rattling around inside the box as you shake it, the box blatantly wasting precious card with all that space. But although I mourn the trees' wasted timbre (ish), the card itself is a very high quality piece of equipment.
Unpacking the card was a cinch seeing as there wasn't much packaged in the first place. Installing it was easy as pie as well, requiring you to dismantle your PC ...
