================================= The Unit - Overview & Appearance =================================
Built by probably the best known PC TV tuner producer, the Hauppauge WinTV USB is essentially a glasses-case sized box of magic which allows you to transform your PC or laptop into a TV.. Executed in translucent turquoise plastic, the unit features a 2 foot long USB lead at one end for connection to your computer and a standard coaxial port for connection to an external aerial at the other. On the side of the box are three further ports; two 3.5mm audio jacks for connecting external audio sources and an S-Video port for connecting a video recorder or DVD player or the like. There is also the mandatory red LED to indicate power set into the plastic on the upper face of the unit.
Also included in the box is a CD with the WinTV application and the drivers required for your device to recognise and use the TV tuner. The WinTV2000 viewing application is a resizable window with various unlabelled icons used to display the TV signal on your screen. In addition to the main viewing area is a "hide-able" "Remote Control" which features a more intuitive interface for controlling the TV output ( a rotating volume knob for instance). The TV viewing window can be set to stay on top of everything else on your PC (so you can nestle it in the corner of your screen whilst continuing to work on other things) or blown-up to full screen size with the click of a button.
The unit has proven to be quite sturdy as I have carried it around a number of places in the bottom of laptop bags and still nothing inside rattles - I generally find this to be a good indicator of sturdy build quality!

Installation of the WinTV USB device is pretty simple: 1. Connect USB lead to free USB port on your PC/laptop 2. If desired, connect the Audio out port of the WinTV box to the audio in port of your PC (this step is not strictly necessary) 3. Connect your TV aerial to the coaxial port at the top of the box. 4. Install the WinTV USB drivers and WinTV2000 viewing software. 5. If necessary, reboot the PC to complete installation
Use of the WinTV USB is a little more tricky however... The first time I tried to use this device it was on my wife's laptop which does not have an audio-in port. Little did I know that the drivers and applications bundled with the unit require the use of an additional audio lead for the sound to travel into the PC, thus I was left with a good TV picture but no sound. A dig around the Hauppauge support website revealed that there is a newer version of the viewing software available which allows the USB lead to carry both video and audio signals. Once downloaded and installed it was time to try again.
Once the software is installed, firing up the WinTV2000 application reveals the aforementioned interface. Clicking the label marked "Menu" provides a menu from which various options are available. Initially the only one of interest is that marked "Suite Manager". Selecting this option will then allow you to scan for channels which the WinTV USB can detect from your aerial. The scan process takes about five minutes and often reveals a selection of regional BBC and ITV alternatives you may not have previously realised were available. The software automatically saves the channels found and when you return to the main screen of WinTV2000 you can use the up and down buttons to navigate between them.
The software also allows for various other options; channels can be fine-tuned, you can connect the box to a cable aerial and re-scan for cable channels or you can capture TV footage for viewing later just like you would with a normal video recorder. There are other untested functions such as the ability to view up to 16 channels at once (really useful in a country with a maximum of five terrestrial channels) and the capacity to store 125 channels.============ Observations ============
The WinTV USB is a somewhat pernickity beast in that the software seems to crash on a fairly regular basis. The faults can be easily rectified simply by re-installing the application software, but it can be quite a nuisance to discover the software has corrupted just as your favourite program is about to begin. The software and drivers also seem to "remember" which USB port the device was installed on; this means you have to remember which port to connect it to on your PC otherwise you will have to re-installl of the software again and then re-scan for all the available channels again!
The WinTV USB is NOT Macintosh compatible; there are no drivers or applications available for the Apple platform, so this device is useless for Powerbook users like myself.
The WinTV USB does not contain any form of built-in aerial which makes some of its portability a joke. Without connecting the unit to a proper aerial it is impossible to receive a viewable TV signal. I have experimented with various home-made contraptions but nothing really works. If you were planning to take this unit away with your laptop, you might need to invest in one of those hit-or-miss portable aerials from Argos as well.
The WinTV USB has been built to the PAL-I standard which means that you can only really use it to receive TV signals in the UK by virtue of the fact that other countries use different broadcast standards (France have SECAM, the USA uses NTSC etc etc). ========== Conclusion ==========
As with all technology, the WinTV USB has it's limitations and quirks which I have already discussed. The WinTV USB is however a very good option for people who are not keen on opening their PC cases to fit an internal TV card. The external option also makes it ideal for people who are travelling with their laptops; we have taken our device and a laptop away a few times in the caravan so my wife did not miss Casualty and it worked very well with the caravan's aerial.
The WinTV USB is also a cheap way to add TV functionality to your PC - mine cost around £25 secondhand and does everything I want. There are alternative options available from the same manufacturer (Hauppauge) which allow for additional radio functionality or digital TV reception, but with the additional features comes additional price. Newer TV cards allow for the reception of Freeview digital broadcasts and as such the WinTV USB is perhaps showing its age.
The quirks with the bundled software are at times extremely annoying, but if you allow time to fix a potential problem, you can get back on schedule before Casualty starts! It is also slightly annoying that you cannot play TV into your current media viewing application like Windows Media Player, but again this is really just a minor annoyance.
The option to connect external video or DVD players via the S-Video port is pretty cool, but again is at odds with the perceived portability of the unit. On the other hand use of this device does make connection of additional devices to your home PC a lot easier as the required ports are easily accessible after initial installation; there would be no need to root around behind your desk to attach the S-Video lead if it is mounted on the side of this device.
I would recommend the WinTV USB to any Windows-based laptop user who knows they will be near a fixed aerial and who just wants to add TV functionality to their mobile technology repertoire. For desktop PC users, I would suggest that they evaluate some of the other options available before commiting to this device.

...So I finally shelled out and got myself a Hauppauge (pronounced "Hop-Hog"!) WinTV Nova-t USB Freeview adapter.
We already have Digital Cable in the house, but I wanted to be able to access some Channels, especially BBC News 24 from my desktop.
Installation was painfully easy, a coaxial TV cable coming from the loft-aerial was already in-situe, so it was simply a matter of plugging the adapter to my computer (via USB1.1), the power supply to the wall, and the coaxial cable (not supplied, but any fly-lead will do) from the wall socket to the adapter.
The supplied software is less than satisfactory, and gives you the bare minimum in order for an image to be displayed on your machine. Thankfully Hauppauge have updated this software and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you visit the Hauppauge website before installing.

...My video recorder had broke, and i was looking at getting a TV card for my system, so i decided to combine them both.
I settled for the WinTV PVR USB edition. It arrived very promptly from my supplier and i started to install it. This is when i started to have problems. I run Windows 2000 on my system - the software supplied did not support this system (even though it has been out for sometime). However, i could download updates from the website.
Having done this, i installed everything as per their instructions. Errors. I downloaded the drivers again, and reinstalled them, rebooted and finally got a picture. I tuned in the channels.
Now to test the recording. ERROR.
Arrrgggg. Rebooted - same error. Reinstalled and got the same error again.

...I was hoping this would be a useful 'toy'. In theory it would have been, but in practice not.
It was a total pain to install. And when I did install it I got continual errors. I kept uninstalling and reinstalling using various combinations, until finally it (sort of ) worked.
Even then, it just stopped working for no apparent reason, needing the power cord removing and re-inserting to reset it.
I have had bad experiences with WinTV cards before, and assumed they had improved their products over the years. Not so. It is just as 'buggy' and unreliable as ever.
I did contact the support before purchase to see if it would work with UK cable systems. I received a one word answer to my e-mail. It said 'yes'. Not inaccurate perhaps, but showed a somewhat cavalier attitute to customers.
