Advantages: Ease of Use, Excellent ranges covered, no disconnections Disadvantages: None that i can say
I run a network suite of 7 computers that link to a central server. I host servers for online multiplayer gaming ranging from First person shooters, simulations and Role Playing Games.
It is important for me to have sufficient network coverage as there is a high bandwidth need. I use a higainwireless device to connect to my servers for admin purposes only. I find that wireless security is better than wired.
I live in a wide covered wireless zone where lots of signals are being sent to and from other wireless devices. Sometimes it can get hard to communicate with other devices as there is too much traffic in the area using a conventional wireless network card.
Because my servers are stored in a different location to where I live I would usually have to travel to the site to administrate the mainframes and it would take time out ...
have for you though. The aerial itself improves signal strength by 6dB/decade (just a technical term - don't worry, its a good number though) but the cable used to connect the device looses 3dB/decades of signal strength to noise per meter. You only get 50cm of cable with it so loose about 1.5dB/decade to extra noise but this does cut down the improvement. (Hence why a long cable is a disadvantage)
This means that you have to weigh up its usefulness to you. Where within 50cm of your wireless card can the device be placed to best improve signal and if it can't be placed easily within 50cm's how much extra cable (and therefore extra signal loss) will you need to get it somewhere useful? In theory any improvement to your signal is good but to play it safe you should probably go for an extra signal gain of 3dB/decade. So you've only got 1m ...
Advantages: Wireless connectivity to Xbox live, Simply to setup Disadvantages: Ridiculously expensive, Doesn't come in black to match my Xbox 360 Elite
If, like me, you have an Xbox 360, you will no doubt be aware of the dynamic and enjoyable facility available to you online, namely Xbox live. Xbox live is a place where you can download demos and game add-ons, chat to your friends, and stream movies and videos direct to your Xbox 360 in glorious high definition. But while the Nintendo Wii and the Sony Playstation 3 can go online straight from the box without any additional hardware, Microsoft, in their infinite wisdom, decided not to include wireless connectivity as standard in the Xbox 360.
This leaves you with a couple of options should you wish to get your Xbox 360 online; an Ethernet cable from your router is probably the cheapest way, but in these wireless days I was really looking at reducing the cables stretching around my home, not add to them. There is another method ...
