Hc45 Hydrocortisone cream is part of the more familiar E45 range which is a range of emollient creams for dry skin conditions. Hc45 is clinically proven and dermatologically tested and as with most creams of this type is for external use only.

The box is easily recognisable as it has the same design as a tube of E45, although considerably smaller as it only contains 15g, but at £1.99 you can't complain. The tube itself is not plastic as with E45, it is in a 'metal' type tube which I personally do not like. I find that when you get towards the end of the tube, it can split at the sides and it is more difficult to control the amount you dispense as the tube does not spring back into shape.

The expiry date is printed both on the box and engraved into the metal on the tube so that you know when to throw the product away even if you no longer have the original packaging.

As with all medicines/creams you should always check that the seal is not broken. Ec45 cream is opened by using the top of the lid to pierce the seal on the tube.

The ointment should always be stored below 25 degrees or this can alter the effects of the cream.

Hc45 contains the following ingredients which I will explain in more detail in a moment -

White Soft Paraffin
Cetomacrogol Emulsifying Wax
Liquid Paraffin
Phenoxyethanol
Purified Water

The active ingredient is Hydrocortisone Acetate BP 1.0% w/w - anything with a higher percentage than this cannot be bought over the counter.

The white soft paraffin is also known as petroleum jelly, its purpose in this cream is to act as a moisturiser and form a layer on the skin to prevent moisture escaping.

Cetomacrogol Emulsifying Wax and liquid paraffin are also a moisturising agents belonging to a group known as an occlusive moisturisers. This means that as well as reducing the chance of any moisture escaping from the skin, they increase the water content of the cells in your skin, causing them to swell, thus reducing any cracks in the skins surface.

Phenoxyethanol is an antimicrobial agent, or preservative, which is used to prolong the life of the cream. This can be an irritant and therefore is only added in tiny amount to the cream.

The active ingredient, hydrocortisone acetate, belongs to a group of medicines named corticosteroid's. Their effect is one of reducing inflammation and irritation. Hydrocortisone works by changing the body's responses to inflammatory reactions and it reduces the release of substances which also cause inflammation.

So, with this in mind, Ec45 can be used to treat insect bites, mild to moderate eczema, reactions to detergent, nickel allergies, plant allergies, reactions to chemicals and irritant dermatitis.

The cream should be applied on small areas only and very thinly. It should only be applied twice each day.

The cream should NOT be used anywhere on the face, the genitals, on any broken skin or around the nose. The cream is also not advised for during pregnancy or children under 10, unless advised by a Dr or other medical professional.

In addition to this, it should only be used for 7 consecutive days. If the cream is used over a prolonged period, it can cause thinning of the skin and it can also alter the production of natural hormones in the body.

I have only been using the cream since yesterday and have already noticed a great improvement, with my inflammation starting to reduce. I am very pleased as I had tried many other creams. It is easy to use and apply, but as I mentioned earlier, the tube may be prone to splitting as you get to the end of the tube. Although the cream does contain various moisturising agents, I do not find it particularly moisturising, but it was comfortable when on the skin and if it is doing it's job in clearing my skin I don't mind!
