Dandruff. Eugh. It looks horrible and it gets everywhere. Even the name is disgusting, and its other name – scurf – is even worse. As far as social and bodily no-nos go, dandruff is up there with B.O. at the top of the unwanted list.
What is Dandruff:
Dandruff is when you have small, loose flakes of skin all over the scalp. The scalp might itch too. The flakes often come loose and hang around in your hair. Or they fall out onto your shoulders and look like a snowstorm.
In some cases it is caused by a yeast infection of the skin, but it can also be caused by hormonal changes, stress, excessive hat/headband wearing, hair products you haven’t rinsed out properly, or allergies to hair products you’ve used.
My Dandruff Hell:
I’ve been doing a lot of working out lately and wearing a wide headband to keep my hair from flopping on my forehead. It’s given me dandruff. I noticed when I looked in my car mirror. It was nestling in my fringe. I nearly stopped the car and screamed, but instead I took the next turning into town and headed straight for Boots. I had to stop this affliction, and FAST.
I looked along the shelves and was surprised to find quite an array of shampoos for controlling dandruff. I had no idea which to opt for so went for the most well-known brand, Head & Shoulders.
Head and Shoulders:
Head and Shoulders is made by Proctor & Gamble, the well known company who produce toiletries, household detergents and baby foods.
The shampoo comes in several flavours: classic, classic 2 in 1, soothing, refreshing, extra volume and smooth & silky. There are conditioners to match.
The active ingredient in H&S is zinc pyrithione, which the bottle claimed would start eliminating the pesky blighter from the very first wash.
Having dry hair, I opted for the smooth & silky flavour for dry/damaged locks. It said it would get rid of my dandruff, keep it silky and manageable, calm frizziness and make my hair ‘kissable’.
Perhaps the latter was the ‘action from the first wash’ they were talking about!
No one’s kissed my hair for ages, and wasn’t likely to with my current distressing condition, so I snapped up a 200 ml bottle immediately and paid my £2.29 with mounting expectation.
I washed my hair as soon as I got home. The shampoo was thick and creamy and pinky-white in colour, and smelt surprisingly good. I had assumed it would be like coal-tar or vinegar, or something else very medicinal, but it was actually really light and flowery and pleasant to the nose. It lathered well too, which for me adds greatly to that nice ‘clean’ feeling you get psychologically.
Result:
I dried my hair. It dried much quicker than normal. That was because the shampoo had left my hair so dry and straw-like, and frizzier and knottier than ever (despite lashings of very expensive conditioner). I applied leave-in-conditioner. It didn’t help. I applied serum. It didn’t help.
I looked in the mirror. I was like the Nescafe ad with the afro-car. But I had no dandruff. None at all. I looked closer and firked around. Not one single solitary flake.
Head and Shoulders is miraculous for clearing dandruff. But it makes your tresses look like s**t.
Needless to say, no one’s kissed my hair since, either.
Advantages: Smells great, reminds me of bubblegum. Disadvantages: Not as great as I had expected.
Head and Shoulders above the rest,I'm not too sure!
I visited the Head and Shoulders website recently, and obtained a free sample of shampoo.
When the sample arrived,it was packaged in an over the top box giving a mysterious quality about the sample,as the ompany didn't tell you which of the range the sample was.It was a mystery!
You had to try the shampoo to see if it was any good, then in a few weeks all would be revealed as to which shampoo it ... ...the shampoo was in fact HEAD AND SHOULDERS FOR DRY/DAMAGED HAIR.
When I found this out I was desperate to buy a bottle.
So off to the shop I went.
I actually bought the shampoo in my local Supermarket, and began to use it when I got home.
I can't begin to describe the disappointment I felt after the first application.
My hair didn't have the bounce or shine the sample had provided, and the smell from my hair was non-existent.
The shampoo does ...

...could think of buying was Head and Shoulders as I had seen it advertised so many times on the TV. Unlike many years ago there are a lot more varieties such as 2 in 1, Menthol, Citris Fresh, Smooth and Silky, Sensitive and there is even a variety for men too. Advantages: Has a pleasant smell, that you don't get from other 'anti dandruff' shampoos. Disadvantages: Made my hair, dry and frizzy.
≈ Dandruff - the evil flaky white, snow-like stuff through your hair, a nightmare if you wear black, (shoulders covered in the offending white stuff is never a good look!).
So what can you do? Well lets face it, for something 80% of people suffer from there is not much on the market, to control it, well actually there is a lot of products out there for it, but I have seen them all, and like a lot of people I am still left searching for a product ... ...in good condition like you would expect from other shampoos, oh, and something that does not smell like TCP would be a bonus!!
So, looking through the shampoos in my local Tesco I seen this, I have tried this before a few years back and was not impressed. However, this claimed to be their 'Best ever Formula', and as I know 'Head & Shoulders' is a famous brand I thought it was worth another try. I paid £1.49 for a 400ml bottle.
Back home, I decide ...

Advantages: seems to keep the dandruff under control Disadvantages: still leaves me with very dry hair
Head and Shoulders provide the following blurb for their anti-dandruff shampoo for dry/damaged hair:
“…best ever dandruff control…”
“…works with your scalp to remove dandruff where it starts…”
“…hair that is always so dandruff free and attractive that it is irresistible…”
“…specially formulated for frequent use…”
Does it work?
==========
I’m ... ...my dandruff appears to be under some sort of control, but I’d say that it was never out of control in the first place. However, I probably do not use it frequently enough for it to be completely effective.
Despite being labelled as for frequent use and for dry/damaged hair and using plenty of conditioner afterwards, it still dries my hair out. It then takes a couple of days for the natural oils to return to my hair.
Not wanting to have a ...

Advantages: great use of the product and only need a small amount to do the job Disadvantages: i didnt find any negative points about this product.
After seeing an advert for head and shouldersshampoo for dry / damagedhair i decided to buy it and give it a shot , see how good it was . I was surprisingly shocked at how good it works and does what it says on the botttle. Before use my hair felt dry and unloved , now it feels soft and smooth like ive just been to the hair dressers ! It also leaves a good smell to your hair even after drying or straightning , Buying head and shoulders you get a great size bottle for the money you pay compared to other shampoo's and conditioners that dont actually do what they say they will . i think it is great value for money and a wonderfull product. i would deffinatly reccomend to a friend and buy again . ...
Advantages: Soft, manageable hair; hydrates the scalp so it's not itchy or dry Disadvantages: Stops working after a few weeks; hair and scalp go back to previous condition
of the shampoo and - of course - its anti-dandruff properties. The active ingredient is special formula containing zinc, which is good for the skin condition (prevents oiliness, itchiness and spots).
The good thing is that for all of the benefits, it won't cost you the earth.
The Head and Shoulders Hydrating Smooth & Silky shampoo is especially designed for dry and damagedhair. It makes the hair feel soft and manageable, with no itchy or dry scalp in sight. It smells very well. I didn't expect much initially, but was actually very surprised with how good it was when I first used the shampoo.
The only drawback is that after several weeks of using this product, I noticed it lost its properties and I am changing my mind about it. My hair went back to looking dull; my scalp felt dirty, dry and itchy. I thought that maybe my hair got used to ...
Advantages: Only one bottle to contend with Disadvantages: A bit pricey
and an h&s in a lighter shade of blue and this is nice and shiny.
It states on the front of the bottle at the top that the action starts from the first wash. It is also anti-dandruff as are all head and shoulder products and is for frequent use.
This product is hydrating smooth and silky for drydamagedhair, or rebellious mops in my case.
INSIDE THE BOTTLE
The shampoo is a thick light blue colour, it doesn't lather up too well on the first wash, but that is probably down to us having hard water in our area. So a second application is needed. The shampoo has a nice smell, all be it a bit chemically.
AFTER THE WASHING
I must admit I was very disappointed at first. I broke a brush and a comb trying to tame my hair after washing it. My hair was a right tangled mess. It didn't feel smooth an slick. Eventually I tamed it ...
