Alright, so shampoo is not the most interesting of subjects but, for most of us, it is something we have to use if we want clean hair. I also have to admit that at various points in my life I have suffered from dandruff.
We can all identify with that dreadful moment when we are out on the town and we think we look really great….but that smart black jacket we are wearing shows off our awful secret. Our friends are thinking “Is it snowing out there?” We know that the blizzard settling on our collar is dandruff!
Dandruff is more common than you think – you are not alone! Dry scalps and dandruff are the most common problems that affect the scalps of more than half the population of Britain.
WHAT IS DANDRUFF?
Dandruff is a flaking of the scalp, it is not a disease and nor is it the result of poor hygiene. Skin shedding, from the scalp, happens to everybody, but dandruff occurs when the rate at which the scalp loses its skin increases. One cause of this is a condition known as Malassezia; a natural fungus that feeds on the natural oils in the scalp. It is not a dangerous fungus, but if you happen to have a low tolerance for Malassezia, your chances of developing dandruff are increased. This is only one cause of dandruff. Many other things affect the condition of your scalp; these include stress, health and hormones. So, anyone can get dandruff at some point in their life.
WHAT CAN WE DO ONCE WE HAVE GOT DANDRUFF?
Dandruff cannot be cured completely; it is impossible to get rid of it forever, but its effects can be lessened by the use of a good anti dandruff shampoo.
This is where I (finally) get to the subject of this opinion. When I am suffering from dandruff I usually turn to Head and Shoulders Dry Scalp Care Shampoo. I sometimes use the Classic Clean but usually I opt for the one intended for dry scalps, because generally I find that when I am suffering from dandruff my scalp tends to dry out too. The Dry Scalp Care shampoo contains mild cleansing and moisturizing ingredients that help to prevent the dryness and itchiness that you may experience.
My local branch of Body Care in Chesterfield sometimes has Head and Shoulders on offer for around a pound a bottle, but I have paid up to £1.50 a bottle. I don’t mind paying more for the product because I know that it works for me.
Although I only tend to use this shampoo when I have dandruff (and for a while afterwards until I know it has cleared up) it is gentle enough to use daily. I suppose I really should it all the time, but I am one of these people who is always looking for a bargain. I collect “money off” tokens and trawl the shelves for the 99p shampoo bargain of the week. If I were wise and thought about it I would use Head and Shoulders all the time, to prevent myself getting dandruff…but, no, I wait until the problem reoccurs before I run for the trusty bottle again!
INGREDIENTS
Here’s the (very) technical bit:
Pyrithione zinc in a shampoo base of water, Ammonium laureth sulphate, Ammonium lauryl sulphate, Sodium lauroyl sarcosinate, Glycol distearate, Sodium sulphate, Dimethicone, Fragrance, DMDM hydantoin, Disodium phosphate, Sodium phosphate, Lauryl alcohol, PEG-600, Sodium chloride polyquaternium-10 and FD&C Blue No. 1.
I’m none the wiser, but it works and that’s all I really need to know! It also contains conditioning agents, so left my hair feeling manageable and soft.
The pyrithione zinc kills the Malassezia fungus that causes the dandruff and also helps to get rid of the flakiness and itchiness that results from the problem. It says on the bottle that if the condition persists, or worsens, you should consult a doctor. There are also the usual warnings about only using it externally and avoiding contact with the eyes. These are standard safety guidelines; they are a very good idea because a) It doesn’t taste particularly nice, and b) It stings if you do get any in your eyes. I’m not sure if this would result in any serious damage, but I would avoid doing them anyway!
As with all other shampoos, using Head and Shoulders is easy. You wet the hair thoroughly and massage into the scalp. At this point I would leave it for a few moments, before rinsing off all the shampoo, just to make sure that the product can have maximum effect. Now use some conditioner, if required, and continue to dry and style your hair as normal. If you have bad dandruff it may take a couple of washes before you see complete results, but I usually see the benefits straight away. My hair always feels very clean and smells nice too!
Head and Shoulders has changed its packaging quite recently and it has taken me a bit of time to identify it on the shelves. Now I am used to the new containers and labels I am just as happy with my shampoo as I was before. The container was easy to undo, even with wet hands, and I didn’t drip shampoo out of the bottle all over the bath, floor and me! You would be surprised how much mess I can get into with lids and drips, so this is definitely a bonus for me.
They have also introduced some new products to their range. Along with the classic dandruff shampoos and conditioners, there is an Intensive Treatment which contains 1% selenium sulphide to help stop itching, flaking, scaling, irritation, inflammation and redness associated with dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis. If you suffer really badly from dandruff this may be the best product to opt for. I will stick to the one I know works for me although there are some other options I would like to try; particularly the one called Refresh. This has a refreshing (hence the name) fragrance of mint, as well as the dandruff reducing ingredients.
I would certainly recommend Head and Shoulders Dry Scalp Care as a good and gentle shampoo. I have coloured hair and it isn’t harsh; in actual fact, I think that it protects my hair, making it less dry and brittle. It may not work for everyone, but I have no complaints about the product. It is a must for me…especially when I am suffering from my own little snowstorm!
Advantages: Soothes a dry itchy scalp Disadvantages: Effects on hair not great
After my recent part-success with Head & Shoulders Citrus Fresh, i decided to route out the free trial sized bottle of Head & Shoulders Soothing for Dry Scalp, which i had recieved a few months earlier. I had not used any of this when i got it, because i don't actually have dandruff, and at the time, did not have dry scalp either, so i didn't think it would be worth using on my hair. But now i'd had a half-success with another Head & Shoulders shampoo, ... ...of the bottle has the Head & Shoulders logo in plain view, as the main feature, then the name of the shampoo, 'anti-dandruff shampoo - soothing for dry scalp', in the bottom right hand corner. The back of the bottle has all the information you need to know about the product, including what it is, what it does, and how it works, directions, and a list of ingredients.
The lid has a flip up section which opens to reveal the hole through which the shampoo ...

Advantages: Nice smell with a easy to get lather and it will do what it says Disadvantages: it makes your hair very soft so it is hard to style
...caught my eye. It was Head & Shoulders Normal and Head & Shoulders Dry Scalp for normal or dry hair on special offer. I knew they had been around for quite some time but I didn't buy them as they would have been expensive but I seen it on special offer so I tried it (when it's not on special offer, it is still cheap).
After reading both product labels I settled on the Dry Scalp formula. As it said it would solve my problem I bought 2 as it was buy ... ...great long lasting hold.
Head & Shoulders Dry Scalp has a patented, clinically-proven formula (or so it says in the advert). It is supposed to balance your scalps natural moisture and stop it from flakeing. After using this for about a fortnight, I noticed that it wasn't itchy and didn't flake as badly as it did before. Now that I constantly use this shampoo, the flakeing has stopped.
The special formula is designed to clean and lightly condition ...

Advantages: Really works Disadvantages: Funny colour
...about this time, however, that Head & Shoulders were regularly plugging their 'new' product, Head & Shoulders Soothing - for dry scalp, on the old goggle-box (or television, to those of you who weren't brought up by my parents). Desperate, intrigued and extremely hopeful, I made a special effort the next time I went shopping to pick some up. The price is about what you'd normally expect to pay for a branded shampoo. I've just checked on the Asda ... ...evening and actually tried the Head & Shoulders. Well, you'll be pleased to hear that the results were absolutely remarkable. I distinctly remember, as I poured a generous glug of the stuff into my hand (I've got very long hair so need to use plenty of shampoo) being a little put out by the odd, pale blue colour of the stuff. What with the smooth, gloopy consistency and the unusual colouring, first impressions were that it distinctly resembled something ...

Advantages: It leaves my head dandruff free, soft and shiny. Disadvantages: I cant think of any.
...I have now been using Head & Shoulders now for a good few years and I would not swap it for the world. I have used other 'top brands' of shampoo before but they never seemed to do the job I wanted them too. I have also had some small cases of allergic reactions to some brands too which is one reason why I have stuck to Head and Shoulders, although the main reason being is that I have had the best results from this shampoo for having a dandruff free ... ...bit hard to describe.
Head and Shoulders is fairly inexpensive and I think it is great value for money. I bought a 200ml bottle for £1.77 at ASDA. A 200ml bottle normally lasts me a while as I only use it a couple of times a week.
The bottle is white with a blue lid and has its name clearly displayed on the front of the bottle and has the ingredients and directions clearly marked on the back of the bottle.
Overall I would recommend this product ...
