Since having my Son, I have been thrown into the world of feeding equipment and to be honest I have found it all very confusing. Should he be drinking from a beaker with a freeflow spout or one he sucks from like a straw? If he doesn't have a straw, will milk build up around his teeth and make them rot? It's enough to drive you crazy!
My Son is only 14 months old but so far I must have bought around 5 different beakers for him and not one of them lived up to their claim of being non-spill. It may not seem like a big issue, but when you little one throws his beaker whilst sitting in his high chair and the lid comes off and water/milk gets splattered all over the kitchen, or when the beaker leaks in your bag, it gets frustrating. It's nice to finally find a beaker which is practical and also looks funky.
I decided to buy the Amadeus Anyway Up Healthy Eating Big Cow Cup from Tesco and it cost £3.49 and can be found in the 'feeding' section of the Baby aisle. The Big Cow Cup holds 325ml of fluid, it has a Black and White Cow print on it and is for toddlers 12+ months. It comes packaged in brightly coloured Green cardboard and really stands out on the shelf. If you look on the shelf you will find a number of other Amadeus products including beakers with handles, soft spouts, beakers with straws or 360 cups etc.
Amadeus sell a range of cups, bowls and cutlery for babies and toddlers. As well as the Big Cow Cup, Amadeus also sell a smaller Cow Cup with handles for babies 6+ months (which is pictured). The Big Cow Cup is made in Britain; it's made from plastic and is of high quality. The Cup is quite thick and is sturdy; you won't be able to squeeze the sides as it is solid. The spout is also hard and has 3 holes for the liquid to come out. The Cup also includes a bite resistant spout for easier drinking; however you will see little bite marks on my Son's beaker where he has chewed it when teething, but the plastic is so thick he's not been able to bite chunks out of it.
The lid of the Cup is not a screw top unlike most beakers and just clicks into place. It can be quite hard to prize open and I tend to do it away from me as I have spilt his drink over me a few times trying to take the lid off.
The Big Cow Cup has a single piece, easy to clean plastic spill resistant valve that you can easily remove to make the cup freeflow when you want it to be. At the moment I have the valve in place as the freeflow is too fast for my son at the moment and he ends up almost drowning himself without it!
The Big Cow Cup is the first beaker/cup I have bought that is truly non-spill and for that alone it should get 5 stars, but there are a few little things that mark it down. The Cup comes with two spout covers; one which I assume is a spare as they can be easily lost. The spout cover merely rests on top of the spout therefore it is loose. It is a shame that it doesn't clip down into place because when the Cup is in your bag you need to make sure that it is upright or it will leak, especially if you have taken out the spill resistant valve.
Also, it would be nice if the Cup had a grip at either the sides of the beaker, just to make it easier for toddlers to grip and hold, as the Cup is quite big for little hands.
I don't have a dishwasher so I am not sure if the Big Cow Cup is dishwasher safe and it should never be placed in a microwave. One handy tip is to make sure that you don't leave the Cup in the washing up bowl after having spaghetti bolognaise as the White sections on the cup may be dyed orange - this happened to a previous beaker of my Son's where the White spout turned orange after he ate a tomato-based sauce as I couldn't get the stain out.
Do I recommend the Anyway Up Healthy Eating Big Cow Cup? Yes, though it is expensive compared to other beakers, but my Son loves it so it's worth every penny. It is very modern and funky looking and has an eye catching moo print pattern. The Cup is non-spill even when thrown from high chair level and is sturdy. I rate the Big Cow Cup 4 stars as the only disadvantages are the tight lid, loose spout cover and it would benefit from having some grips on the side of the cup.
