This book is made up of five stories set between 1960 and 1999. All of the stories are linked.

Low Men In Yellow Coats
-----------------------

This story is set in 1960, and is about Bobby Garfield. His dad dies when he was three so he lives with his mum in an appartment building. It tells of his relationships with his friends, and about some of the things they did. However, it mainly centres on Ted Brautigan, a man who moved into the upstairs appartment. Bobby befriends Ted, and gets paid to read to him. What Ted is really paying him for though is to look out for the low men in yellow coats, or signs that they may be around.

Hearts In Atlantis
------------------

This 2nd story is set in 1966. It cenres around Pete Riley going to university. A craze of playing Hearts is sweeping the dorm he is living in, and has a bad effect on all of their grades, so much so that some drop out completely. Also a main aspect of this story is anti-war protests. There is an uprising in the university of anti-war supporters, much to the dislike of the principal, who graffiti messages against the government on the buildings. Evnetually all of the students who are left end up supporting each other and standing up against the way the place is run.

Blind Willie
------------

The 3rd story is set in 1983. It is about Bill Sherman who leads a double life as a blind beggar. It tells of parts of his life, notably his time in Vietnam. In this story things start to tie together witht the previous.stories.

Why We're In Vietnam
--------------------

The 4th story, set in 1999 is about John Sullivan. It tells of how he meets up with another Vietnam veteran, and discussed things that happened while he was in Vietnam. This fits in with all the previous stories, as characters from each are mentioned in each of the stories.

Heavenly Shades Of Night Are Falling
------------------------------------

The 5th and last story is set in 1999. It is about Bobby Garfield again, and how he goes back to his original home, and meets some of his old friends, and learns about what has happened to the other's.

I have deliberately been vauge, as I don't want to spoil your reading of this great book. Lots of unexpected things happen, and the way all of the storys tie in with each other makes for a great read. If you haven't read it, go and buy or borrow it.

It's a intrigingly written book, but it loses it after the first two storys.

I think I've read every King novel up to Insomnia, but for some reason I haven't read any since. I'll have to give this one a go. Thanks! - Dione
