Heat is a weekly gossip magazine, costing £1.45, I think mainly directed towards females of the younger generation, but even male pensioners would be partial to this! My friend's 90 year-old great grandmother has a subscription to this and reads it from cover to cover religiously, so there you go, very versatile and people of all ages love it!
There are many other celebrity entertainmentmagazines out there: OK, Hello, Now, Closer, Sneak, etc, so what makes Heat stand out? I'll tell you what's wrong with all the other mags:
-OK treats celebrities like they're God and completely arse-lick them. -Now is too mumsy, and the interviews with celebrities featured are usually from Emmerdale or something. -Sneak - what's with the Gareth Gates obsession? -Closer I've never tried, so this might be as good, but I doubt it!
Heat is a nice in-the-middle - they aren't afraid to take the piss out of celebrities, which I love. There's nothing more satisfying than see Jennifer Lopez or Catherine Zeta Jones with a huge spot on their face or smiling for the camera with something stuck in their teeth - it's human nature to be bitchy, after all! They interview the hottest celebrities of the moment, and ask questions no-one else dares to! As well as the celebrity bits, there's horoscopes, beauty, fashion, TV and music sections as well, so there's something for everyone, really.
It varies, but Heat generally has around 150 pages in, including adverts. There does seem to be quite a lot of adverts, but it's all advertising make-up, CD's and films, so it's not too bad.
Every week, there's 100% Unapproved (pictures of celebs looking dodgy), Spotted (photos of what they've been getting up to this week), Star Style (how to get a celeb's style), News And Stuff (gossip that's been doing the rounds this week), Hot Off The Press (the latest antics they've been getting up to!), My Showbiz Life (half-page interview), a crossword (always easy), horscopes and Say What? (a quotes page).
That's in general really, and interspersed throughout are gossip columns called Details about not-very-interesting but still good to know things about celebrities - there's one here about Justin Timberlake breaking his foot, and Kelly Osbourne appearing in some musical. There will usually be some other bits and bobs, one-off articles like TOP 50 SEXIEST MEN and special promotions.
They also give away film tickets frequently, which I like. It's not a competition at all - cut out the forms and go to a participating cinema and watch the film! They've given away tickets for The Ring, Maid In Manhattan, The Life Of David Gale, and there are probably some more but I don't really remember. I haven't tried these promotions though, as the nearest cinema is too far away from me. If you live in a big town or city though, you should be okay.
There's a new section, in the middle, called Scandal. This is more National Enquirer than Heat, and has all the 'scandalous' gossip, like Sandra Bullock dating someone 17 years younger than her, and packed with Trinny and Susannah style bitchiness! There used to be a Trinny and Susannah column in Heat, where they rip apart celebrities outfits, but I haven't seen it recently.
I buy my copy of Heat religiously every Tuesday, when it comes out, and I wouldn't be without it. I feel fidgety and restless if my newsagent's run out of it. If that happens, I buy Now or OK for my celebrity fix, but it's never as good or satisfying as Heat. I usually have a flick through and then chuck them somewhere, but with Heat I read it cover to cover.
I love this, and if you haven't tried it - try it! Even if you read Reader's Digest, give this a go - you might just like it! And if you hate it, it's only £1.45, you haven't lost too much money, have you?

And what's wrong with Reader's Digest..?! (kidding!) Great op - really informative - will deffo go and have a squiz in WH Smiths (hopefully before I get kicked out of the shop for reading the magazines without buying them!)...

I generally tell people I don't like these kinds of magazines, but then, my grandmother subscribes, and whenever I visit her, I am fascinated by them and can't put them down! Thanks for the information on this one. I don't think I've seen it before. Fr. K
