Recently I celebrated a BIG birthday and had a retirement party, my husband bought some lager as well as wine, the lager was Heineken Export and as some was left I decided to try a bottle with my lunch, sitting out in the garden enjoying the April sunshine. I was feeling tired after gardening- that was my excuse! Well, that's what retired people do, don't they?
My father was a beer drinker and thought men who drank lager were wimps - that was my husband! But lager is no longer as weak as it was when first introduced to Britain's pubs back in the 1960's.
In 1969, (the year we got married) Heineken decided to license the brewing of Heineken Cold Filtered to Whitbread, who looked after the production of the beer locally. Heineken quickly became a huge hit in the UK. Television advertising, like 'Heineken refreshes the parts other beers cannot reach' helped boost the sales. People's tastes were changing by the 1980's and a Premium lager was made called Export. Heineken started over 140 years ago and is a Dutch firm, but now has plants and brews in many countries. The original brewery is now a museum in Amsterdam and I'm told is worth a visit!
*The bottle*
I'm really a wine drinker but especially on holiday will have the odd bottle of lager. My lager must be in a glass - I don't drink from bottles. My son argues it tastes better from the bottle! The bottle is standard green glass, with a metal top, a quick flip with a bottle opener and the foam starts to bubble. Well to be truthful, I'm hopeless at opening bottles and so struggled, moving the bottle about and the foam went up and over me! The label on the front gives the name and that the lager is 5% alcohol brewed in Holland and has a red star on it. It contains 330mls. I realise this will have a little kick, too many and I'll be asleep all afternoon!
*The Taste*
To me all lager tastes a little bitter, and Heineken Export is the same, but it is also has a fresh, almost fruity aroma. It is a lovely pale and quite clear, bright golden coloured liquid. I don't want to shock lager drinkers, but I always needed some lime to be able to swallow it! But I have grown up and now and can swallow Export without the lime, as I realise it only disguised the flavour of the hops and barley malt. The foamy top, by now has almost disappeared, and it was easy to drink without ending up with an embarrassing moustache!
There are no additives in Heineken, nor are there any Genetically Modified Organisms used as raw materials, so I know I'm drinking something quite pure. My bottle was well chilled, and I believe that is how lager should be drunk, as it warmed in the sun, the last few mouthfuls certainly didn't taste as nice.
You may wonder why so many bottles were left? Well my son thinks Heinekens Export is tasteless, that is a 25 year olds view. I think it is fine! But there again I do prefer wine, so my judgement is based on the taste I've just had, not on years of sampling!
*Cost*
Supermarkets regularly have offers, so it is worth shopping around, to find the best price. Tesco are selling it at present at £4.49 for 6 bottles, a saving of £2.00.
*Drinking Sensibly*
Alcohol must be respected and drinking and driving is not advised, even after one bottle of lager, as no-one knows how their reactions will be affected.
*Conclusion*
An easy to drink lager, which when drunk cold, refreshes you. But so would a glass of sparkling mineral water and no headaches later!
PS Once I've drunk all these bottles, I can hang them up and sing "Ten Green bottles hanging on a wall!"
PPS (Apologies to animal lovers.) Slugs love lager and beer so treat them, pour some into a container and sink in the soil, it helps rid your garden or slugs that eat the Hostas, and they die happy.
And lastly - the best is yet to come!
*Cooking with Lager* - another way to finish it off!
Mix the following ingredients 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice 3 tablespoons soy sauce 1 1/2 tablespoons olive oil 2 teaspoons chopped fresh oregano 1 teaspoon chopped fresh thyme 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 2 teaspoons honey 1/4 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 3 garlic cloves, minced 1 cup of lager Add 4 skinless chicken breasts and leave to marinate for 3 hours. Prepare grill to medium-high or heat barbecue. Brush rack with a little oil to prevent sticking and cook under tender. Enjoy!
Advantages: Easy drinking, do not need a lot to get drunk Disadvantages: Lacks real taste, do not need a lot to get drunk
...like and dislike Heineken :~
Heineken have been around a few years now, in fact over 140 years so you would think they would know a thing or two about beer. Probably a lot more than me anyway.
The first image i got of Heineken was those silly adverts, Heineken refreshers the parts other beers do not reach. Heineken was one of the first European brewers to advertise for the mass markets and it has helped them to the number 2 brewer in the world ... ...Heineken was the one brewed by under licence by Whitbread which for some reason was weaker than the Heineken drunk around the rest of the world. So you could drink more and still be sober but for me it smelt and tasted awful so never tasted it again, Until on a boat trip in Greece the only beer on board was the stronger 5% Heineken now this was something different. As everyone knows lager always tastes better in warmer climates and when you seek ...

...a glass of Heineken? Heineken is a Dutch lager, probably the most famous of all Dutch lagers surpassing the likes of Orangeboom and Grolsch. Although, arguably, Grolsch have the best adverts! Heineken entered the UK market in the 1960's and back then people preferred the weaker beers and ales to Lagers so Heineken produced a weaker version of their popular lager and Heineken Cold Filtered was born! Then in 1985, to meet the demands of an ever increasing ... ...24th of February in 2003 Heineken changed forever as the Whitbread based brewery's license ended and real, Dutch, Heineken was finally being sold in the UK.
-Packaging-
The beer comes in its familiar green packaging with its red star logo and does so in over 170 countries world wide. It is available in bottles, on draught and in cans. I am a big fan of the continental approach to canned lager as they tend to stick to the smaller, Coke sized, 330ml ...

Advantages: Refreshing, Quality, Available almost anywhere in the world Disadvantages: May not be strong enough for some
Heineken is Holland’s most famous brand of beer and is the leading selling and most well known brand internationally.
Heineken is one of my favourite beers primarily because it is available wherever I travel. As some of you may be aware I travel regularly to West Africa and Asia and Heineken is always available wherever I go, be it in cans or bottles.
Heineken is a quality lager beer that provides a perfect balance being not too strong and ... ...up and slow you down, Heineken instead has a refreshing, almost pick me up, kind of taste and texture. Certainly one could down considerably more Heineken (and my other favourite brand Carlsberg) than one could other lager/bitters. The only beer that I could consume more of would be Budweiser but as I stated in an early opinion this is just too light for me.
Heineken has a fine history and as you are all aware is produced in Holland and a pride ...

...the green glow of a Heineken tap. It stems primarily from a holiday in Greece where they sell only 3 types of beer Amstel, Mythos (home brand) and Heineken. Prior to this trip Heineken was just a tepid ‘cold filtered’ choice on pub taps, and whilst lo-alcohol beers are good for drivers, I would rather stick to a more refined number. Having discovered that Mythos was distinctly average and Amstel was a fairly horrendous alternative, I was forced into ... ...I soon realised that Heineken was nowhere to be found, yes you could buy the bottles, but for that 5.0% export flavour you would have to in fact export yourself to the continent.
Fortunately the good people at Heineken began to export it here on mass. The first time I discovered the cans was in a pokey corner shop in Charlton, myself and my Greek flatmate (no relation to the holiday) fell upon it in wondrous gaze. With haste I purchased 8 cans and ...

Advantages: Good Flavour. Consistent. Quite Strong. Well Marketed Disadvantages: Not the Finest
Heineken from Holland is a well trusted premium lager that is brewed with an appeal to the international market place. It is among the largest exports of beverages from the Netherlands and has long been widely available in the UK. This full flavoured beer is rather robust. It has a deep golden colour,a hoppy aroma and a slightly bitterish taste and has some aftertaste.,although not too pronounced. Heineken is a comparatively strong lager with an alcohol ... ...it is chilled- a warm Heineken somehow would not be too appealing. Heineken is one of those hidden treasures that very few people know about. I inherited a 24 can slab which someone brought along to a barbecue at my place a couple of weeks ago.
As I was busy keeping an eye on the food and making sure everyone else's drinks were charged I thought it best not to have too much to drink myself.
I deliberately picked a Henieken as I thought it would be a refreshing but not too alcoholic drink to sup slowly as the afternoon passed.
Surprisingly it was less watery and much better tastign than I had anticipated. A bit like Kronenburg but not as yeasty as Bud or Red Strip for instance.
Now that Heineken are taking manufacturing and distribution back inhouse for the UK I would imagine their marketing will improve and they can do something about public perception.
A very nice beer that's hugely ...

Christmas is coming Kippers getting drunk, Please put a six pack in old Kippers hat. If you haven’t got a six pack a four pack will do, if you have more than a four pack God bless you.
OK, a bad attempt at changing Christmas rhymes. But maybe I’ve over indulged in a few too many Heineken Cold Filters. So what is Cold Filtered, well it’s good old-fashioned Heineken we all know and love just revamped and given a new name. You can still buy the much stronger tasting Heinekenexport. Which is a strong tasting high alcohol lager, which too me tends to numb my taste buds to much. Or you can get the Cold Filtered which is 3.4% volume alcohol and has a nice crisp refreshing taste (stole that from the tin as it’s the best words to describe it).
Cold Filtered as all Lager should be is best-served cold, note of caution ...
